The article says the only role that Shimada's replacing is the grandfather in Chibi Maruko-chan. His roles in Kai and One Piece have yet to be replaced.

As a result, 55-year-old Bin Shimada will substitute for Aono as Tomozou Sakura — the grandfather of the title character in the Chibi Maruko-chan television
anime series — starting with the episode that airs on Sunday.

Aono also plays Kami-sama and Mihawk Juraquille on the Fuji TV anime series Dragon Ball Kai and One Piece, respectively, and Fuji TV is looking into recasting those roles as well.

He could replace Kami, but we don't know for sure yet...

Yanami, at 81, is the one I'm most worried about hanging in there.

It's one thing to lose an actor who plays a non-critical character without all that much screen time left, it's another to lose the narrator!

He'll make a full recovery but it's sad that he couldn't finish his role as Kami..would be have been his best no doubt.

No, they're not spring chickens, but the original cast was quite varied in age.

Yeah, and the average age of the Dragon Ball cast right now is in the 50s, so they're actually fairly young (Which isn't surprising, really, considering that the anime finished just over a decade ago, that isn't a terribly long time). Takeshi Aono's on the upper end of the bell curve.

I always liked Takeshi's work. Hope he pulls through. :(
