Way to young?! He's 29! Sabat's Vegeta sounds like he's in his 40's or something. But they both sound way too angry for to be good Vegetas.Gozar wrote:...I liked Drummond's Vegeta to an extent. But it sounded waaaay too young.

Re: "DragonBall Z Kai" TV Broadcast Talkback
Actually Sabat was the one most noted for the "angry all the time" voice for Vegeta, until the Kai dub that is, where he has range for once. Brian's Vegeta always had range, yes even with that "troll voice" he used. He had some infamous unintentionally funny over-acting like the understannnnnnd?!. But honestly that's mainly faulted on the script and bad voice direction. If you're an actor being told to linger so unnaturally long on a word just to match the mouth flaps, you really expect it to turn out well?

The only line that stood out to me was the last thing he said. "You're mine" or something.RazorX wrote:Brian Drummond's "You won't escape my wrath" is legendary. There was so much emotion, intensity, anger and psychotic rage in Brian's voice. The Ocean dub of that scene blows both Japanese and Funimation versions out of the water.
As for Sabat, he was terrible in the wrath scene in Funi's 2005 redub but he's not bad in Kai, he really improved his acting for that scene. Still, he wasn't anywhere near Brian's intensity and I didn't expect him to be.
The rest is just loud and echo. I don't buy it.
The thing is, Vegeta isn't a generic evil guy like Skeletor or Cobra Commander and shouldn't have that shtick voice.Super Sonic wrote:While I like both, I still think Drummond's Vegeta during seasons 1 and 2 had one of those really memorable villain voices that stick out like Skeletor, Cobra Commander and others who you instantly recognize at hearing offscreen. Makes me wonder what it would've been like had he been able to get away with more like Sabat was. (Drummond couldn't outright say he could kill people). Still Sabat made him sound calm, yet evil at least during season 1 redub.
But this is getting really off topic...

Re: "DragonBall Z Kai" TV Broadcast Talkback
Brian Drummond had an excellent voice for Vegeta, because he brought out the self-satisfied arrogance of the character in his voice. You could tell that he enjoyed listening to the sound of his own voice. It had this really cocky, snarky sound to it. Go and find Vegeta's fight with Kewi from the Ocean dub and hear what I mean. He sounds like he's just so much better than everyone, which is Vegeta. That said, I don't think he recieved the right direction sometimes.
I won't say that I prefer Sabat's Vegeta, but I won't say either that Drummond's is better than Sabat's Kai performance.

Indeed, Sabat has a pretty unfair advantage at this point in the form of a decade of refinement in his Vegeta. I think under the same circumstances, Brian, who was a seasoned actor long before Sabat, could easily top Chris's Kai performance. Oh, what Brian could do with the better voice direction and script that Kai has...
The potential was always there, especially if he dropped the high pitched cartoony voice he used and went more Zechs.

Re: "DragonBall Z Kai" TV Broadcast Talkback
With Drummond's Vegeta he's 29-31 and sounds like he's a teenage punk. I'm not lying, when I was young and didn't even know that there were 2 different voice casts at work I thought that Vegeta purposely sounded like that in the Saiya-jin and Namek Saga's because he was a teenager. I mean he was very short after all, lol.linkdude20002001 wrote:Way to young?! He's 29! Sabat's Vegeta sounds like he's in his 40's or something. I don't know what you're alluding to, but anyway...Kendamu wrote:Yeah, Brian Drummond is overrated the same way The Dark Knight is overrated.
See what I did there?
Brian Drummond can act. He's damn good at it, and the man has a powerful voice.
However I think his Vegeta voice was incredibly generic and brought nothing more of a sense than basically being the "bad guy".
My preference is that the Funi Vegeta we have now in Kai is better than anything Drummond did, and not just by a little.
I really am not sure why so many on this forum specifically think of him as the voice for Vegeta.
I hope I didn't give you the impression that I only thought it was overrated just to be trolling... also, The Dark Knight was a great film.
Re: "DragonBall Z Kai" TV Broadcast Talkback
From just a vocal standpoint, yes, both Sabat and Drummond's Vegeta voices started as "bad guy voices". Biggest difference, Sabat got a decade to finally turn his Vegeta into something good, and it's not even completely consistently good, though never bad, in Kai.
Drummond, from an acting standpoint was good to begin with, he just got shit to work with. Don't get me started on that horrid alternate DEEEBEEEZEEE dub. With Brian's pure charisma alone, give him Kai's script and direction, a more pleasing deeper tone of voice, and watch out Chris!

Admittedly, Sabat was a new guy in the world of voice acting at the beginning. But, as mentioned, he's grown in regards to both voice acting and the role. I haven't noticed many instances where I've been bothered by the voice.
If all Brain needs is charisma, Kai's script and direction, and a more pleasing voice to play the role, why not just let Vegeta get voiced by Bill Clinton, and call it a day?
There's more to it than that. Even if he gives it a fantastic dubbing, that doesn't mean it will be better, it will just be yet another different take on the character. One can't just cut and paste random VAs from across the world into one dub. You've got to take the good with the bad, basically.
Note: All "Brain"s were purely intentional for a slight laugh.

Re: "DragonBall Z Kai" TV Broadcast Talkback
Lol, I can't believe I did it again, egad BRAIN!
Anyway, I still feel Br, er Drummond could kick ass as Vegeta. Like I keep saying, the acting was there, the character was mostly there despite the bad script. He just used the wrong tone of voice, I don't even mind the rasp with Drummond, because it sounds natural coming from him. Give me the same ego centric, charismatic delivery and sexy it up with some Zechs. Zechs it up and Brian could do no wrong by me, he can't be blamed for bad scripts and bad direction. Just like how Sabat shouldn't be completely praised when it's his much better performance than Z, combined with a much better script seeming to overshadow Brian.
For the record though, Brain is indeed great, but I feel there's quite a bit of good voice actors out there that can do Vegeta justice too.

It's about charisma. Neither of the Bushes have that, so they can't be Vegeta.
I say have John McCain as Freeza, and he will address Zarbon and Dodoria as "my friendSCH".
