How do they sound like men that have a homosexual attraction to other men? Or are you just a bigot, considering it's the first and only term that popped in your mind?
Oh lord. Give me a break. Yeah I'm such a "bigot."
I was using "gay" referentially. As in, "this is what a 14 year old boy (the audience for the show) would call it."
But maybe you're right. Maybe from now on I should allow the very sight of the word to twist my panties in knee-jerk, context-blind offense.
Because that will
definitely work in dissuading people from using it as an emotionally-charged insult.
"Lame" or "dumb" or whatever don't have any sting anymore. "Gay" does. And exactly BECAUSE people are hypersensitive about it. Your anger is exactly what gives it its power.
And the truth is that "gay" (definition 2) has evolved to convey something fairly nuanced in meaning, which there honestly isn't any other word for. "Lame"/"hokey"/"corny" etc. really don't cut it.
It's like the new secondary meanings for "a bro" or "douche" - neither of which mean "a brother" or "feminine hygiene product", but which have evolved in recent years to refer to specific types of contemporary males and their behavior.
I'm not advocating the use of "gay" as an insult. I don't give a shit who says it or doesn't. And I think THAT'S the right approach: indifference. Holier-than-thou resistance sure as hell isn't.
