See, if the kids like it, that's cool. No problems with us.

But it's the fact that, *that is not the character.* He is not retarded, he is not "HERPDERP", he's a thuggish, monsterous guy with a playful attitude about violence. The voice and the tone go against his character, that's all there is to it.

What I would have done for Brian Massey, seen here:

to play him.

Lad Russo should have at least one role in Dragonball Z Kai.

Hell, at least all FUNi shows.

Yeah but he doesn't really appear much, and that's more of a comic relief character.

I love when they add spice to character voices like Recoom and Jheese. With Burter and, to an extent, Ghurd, their voices are so "Typical Alien" that it's almost forgettable. I had completely forgotten what Burters dub voices sounded like until I heard it in Kai.

I remember both Reacoom and Jheeses' voices, and they make me laugh. And, as Scarz pointed out, the kids can relate to the wacky voices, and that's what this show is gearing towards.

But that's sort of telling fans of the original, the intentions of the original creator, and the basic concept of accurate translation, that they're wrong and need to deal with it.

 Yeah, that's uncanny.

I don't mind Sabat's take on Recoom this time around. With the improved dialog, it sounds fine.
Schemmel is doing great as Nail, and Ayres is still awesome as Freeza, particularly when he lost his temper.

The only thing that really bothered me about this episode was the peach-colored censored blood. Is that supposed to look like sweat? Drool?

Was Ginyu's little "FEEL the joy!" during the Dance of Joy in the Japanese version? That really got a laugh out of me.

Making Reacoom sound like he got dropped on his head as a baby is not "spicing up" the character. It's a downgrade.

He doesn't to me though, mostly. He sounds more like a musclebound meat-head, with a hint of Schwarzenegger in it, though he does sound a bit "slow" when he laughs, but with the improved scripts and altered performance and delivery, I'd say it's a large improvement over the original which turned the "retardation dial" up to the max. It's still far from perfect, but it's definitely not straight up "retard".

Also, anyone else afraid of reruns starting tomorrow? I really hope I don't expect to see Goku taking on the Ginyu Force, only to see Radditz ship landing instead...

Granted, I haven't gotten to hear him in earnest yet, as I've not had a chance to watch tonight's episode. I was more talking in general.

It's not Funimation's place to "spice up" anything, and when they do, it always ends in failure.I was actually embarrassed to watch the show.

Hell, even the Stallone-sounding Recoome from the Ocean cast years was better than this shit.

By giving a character an accent? I personally don't think so. I honestly can't remember any of the Ginyu Squad's Japanese voices for the life of me, and I'm as avid a sub-fan as the next Daizex-er. I'm not gonna speak personality-wise, as I haven't watched enough of the recent dub episodes to vouch for that...but as far as how the voices sound, I prefer what FUNi did. From what I actually DO remember of the Japanese VA's, they were typical villain voices that I've heard before and after.

Well, then I guess a tasteful disagreement is what we need here, because I like what FUNi has done.

(Although I will say that I prefer the new Reacoom over the old one. While I found it tolerable, it was still a little too "HERP DERP" at times.)

Well, I was jokingly referring to the rerun hell the Ocean dub broadcast was caught in.

I agree, it's not saying fans of the old or original are wrong, it's just a different interpretation. And somewhat goofy voices aren't too bothersome, really, as the Ginyu Force are the epitome of the goofy villain team. They feel like an evil Power Rangers (or Super Sentai) team, so it's not too terrible a thing to do.

I do have the fear that this view might get me and others some flack, but I don't consider myself any less of a fan for this view. I'm open to this show I love being interpreted slightly differently than others would, while still appreciating the original.

Sad thing is, even when many people all love something, further examination can show that different people love different aspects about them, and have a different degree of tolerance of deviation from said love.

Yep. These are all the rest of the episodes scheduled for this month, which wraps up the Ginyu stuff:

31. Goku Arrives At Last! Take Down the Ginyu Force! 7/15
32. The Star Player Appears! Ginyu vs. Goku! 7/21
33. Full Power, Goku! Captain Ginyu’s Attack! 7/22
34. Surprise! Goku is Ginyu and Ginyu is Goku! 7/28
35. Goku’s Comeback! Call Forth Porunga 7/29

We won't know if they'll air any episodes past that until the August schedules start getting released.

I quite like Recoom's Z Kai voice. Now that his retardedness has been toned down, I've got no issues with it.

The dance of joy thing was in the jpn version, yeah. And in the ocean dub. And in the season sets redub. And here, too. It's everywhere...
