Re: Future Kai DUB Re-casts speculation
Couple of years ago, I was watching a Slayers Revolution fan-sub (as it hadn't been obtained by FUNimation at that point), and there was a character who always referred to his brother by stature as opposed to name, so whenever he said "aniki", it would be left untranslated with a translators note on top saying (Translator's note: Aniki means brother in Japanese).
Also, towards the end of Evolution-R, they had Lina and co. dropping F-bombs like crazy... it was like the return of AnimeLabs!

I can kinda see it's use in fansubs, as it sounds sort of like a calling to someone, but reading it in manga is the worst.KaiserNeko wrote:That shit is ridiculous and annoying. -.-B wrote:Hey, I can't fucking stand it when they use "oi."

Re: Future Kai DUB Re-casts speculation
Isn't "Oi" an acceptable form of getting someone's attention in Not-America? I mean, I heard it on an AC/DC song and they're from New Zealand or something.
Hey, I'm kidding around. I'm only half this ignorant.
So, DUB recasts, eh? I hope Android 19 gets a recast. I couldn't understand a damn word in the original dub.

Re: Future Kai DUB Re-casts speculation
19 sounds a lot better with the voice filter off, didn't we hear that in the season 4 orange bricks?

I'm afraid that some of the voices that I actually liked from Z will get recast. Does anyone know if Meridith McCoy is returning as Android 18?

Re: Future Kai DUB Re-casts speculation
Looking back I'm pretty happy with every voice after Namek and don't really think they need a recast. Better direction most certainly but I can't think of an ear grating voice I never want to hear again. Even 16 could be saved with better voice direction.

As far as I know she is still at FUNi, so I don't think 18 will be redubbed. 17 for sure won't since Chuck Huber is still there.penguintruth wrote:I'm afraid that some of the voices that I actually liked from Z will get recast. Does anyone know if Meridith McCoy is returning as Android 18?

Re: Future Kai DUB Re-casts speculation
Meredith McCoy is reprising her role of Maria Ross for FMA: Brotherhood, so I think it's pretty safe to say she'll be back for #18 in Kai.
As for Jeremy Inman (#16), he's playing Heymans Breda in Brotherhood, so he's still around too.

Re: Future Kai DUB Re-casts speculation
Bah, I was hoping they'd recast #18. The acting's always been terrible with her. >_<
Inman will probably continue voicing #16, but hopefully naturally...

Re: Future Kai DUB Re-casts speculation
I'm not so sure about McCoy, but Inman is pretty ingrained in tons of FUNi shows. I doubt he's getting recast.

Re: Future Kai DUB Re-casts speculation
That's the first I've heard anybody say that. I thought her acting was just fine. She sounded cold, ruthless, and nonchalant. And when she was scared of cell she sounded frightened and unsure. The voice was natural and it fit the character.JulieYBM wrote:Bah, I was hoping they'd recast #18. The acting's always been terrible with her. >_<
I also enjoy her portrayal of Bad Lunch.
Re: Future Kai DUB Re-casts speculation
I fear we disagree on both of those fronts. Her Lunch feels more like an obnoxious character voice and I've found her attempts at acting tough just as tough. Her #18 also has a bit of a Sabat Zarbon-esque 'posh' to it that also found to be grating.Innagadadavida wrote:That's the first I've heard anybody say that. I thought her acting was just fine. Granted I just want Stephanie Young casted in the role, but if McCoy does a good job this time around I probably won't mind.

I always enjoyed her #18, but her Lunch did very much get on my nerves. It was way too over the top.

I don't know. I stopped watching fansubs because of shit like this:Blue wrote:Which is so weird because outside of that they do a pretty great job. I mean occasionally they pull an Anime Labs (luckily no F bombs have been dropped I believe) but they do a pretty competent translation if it wasn't for that bizarre need to leave every other words in Japanese and put a translation note on the top of the screen. Re: Future Kai DUB Re-casts speculation
Oh yeah, I totally stopped watching fansubs because every once in a while, maybe now and then in ten fansubs, you would get one or two translator notes.
It's such a huge inconvenience. Totally ruins the whole thing. And I couldn't possible ignore one or two stupid things, because everything MUST BE PERFECT.
Amirite?

Re: Future Kai DUB Re-casts speculation
Translator notes weren't the only reason why I stopped watching fansubs. I also stopped watching them because of the hard to read or needlessly stylized text, the wonky translations, the downright mis-translations, the unnecessary leaving in of Japanese words that actually have fucking translations and the fansubbers' need to put English translations over Kanji on the actual video.penguintruth wrote:Oh yeah, I totally stopped watching fansubs because every once in a while, maybe now and then in ten fansubs, you would get one or two translator notes.

Oh and penguintruth, translator notes appear way more than "now and then in ten fansubs". Translator notes have appeared in every fansub that I have watch to date, and they frickin' annoy me.

Re: Future Kai DUB Re-casts speculation
Huh. I guess the shows I've watched fansubbed are just by less annoying fansubbers, because I hardly run into them. The most notes I've seen in a fansub is the Ebichu ones, and those are usually before the episode.
But of course, I never watch fansubs of shows readily available on the domestic market.
On the subject of recasts, though, I wouldn't mind hearing a new #19.

Heck, I never watch fansubs anymore of shows that have been licensed, period.penguintruth wrote: But of course, I never watch fansubs of shows readily available on the domestic market.
