Dragonball Manga

Post by Pilgrim Sun » Sun May 22, 2005 12:56 pm

I just want to know if the Dragonball manga goes right up to 16 books. I have not found a 17th so I am assuming there is no more than 16. Can anyone confirm this for me please?

Okay, thanks very much for that.

It is harder for me to locate the Manga in Europe then America and I just so happened to locate the full set. I needed to make sure it was actually the full set otherwise it would be incomplete and I would have a hard time completing it.

Thanks again.

Dragon Ball goes up to 42 volumes, but if you mean the Dragon Ball that covers the story of Son Goku as a child....yes, 16. Seventeen and onward is DBZ.

Yeah Goku as a child and teen is what I meant. Sorry about not being specific enough.

I would also like to ask if the search for the Otagon shaped furnace is also included in the 16th volume like the anime or not?

Technically, the "DB"-era continues into volume 17, as well... but Viz moved them back a volume to start a "fresh" DBZ release. It's only two chapters... 193 & 194.

@Pilgrim Sun
Nope, that's all just anime filler. In the manga the chapter ends with Goku and Chichi flying away from the Budokai on Kinto'un. Then Raditz arrives at the beginning of the next chapter.

Ah, that's a shame. I quite liked that seeing as it was inspired by the Chinese novel 'Journey To The West'.

Thanks for the answers.

There was a lot in early DB drawn from Journey to the West. IIRC the start to the end of Pilaf was almost nothing but. :D

Heh, a couple of days ago I happened to see some filler eps between Uranai Baba and the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai and what do I see? Another filler ep that's based on JttW =D The episode with Kinkaku and Ginkaku and their magic gourd is based on the Gold Horn Great King and Silver Horn Great King episode of JttW. On of the finer stories in JttW and really funny as Wukong escapes several times from the gourd ^^

Yeah, I remember seeing that, Goku leaving on his 3 year journey. But even though its filler, I still very much enjoyed watching parts that have been inspired by 'Journey To The West'. Besides, if not for that, then you may have never known what Goku did on his 3 year journey.

That's really one of my favorite filler episodes. I haven't read JttW, so thanks for filling me in on that.

It is very good, but I still prefer the episodes with the Furnace.

Another question, did they ever have a filler episode based on the Nine tailed Fox from JttW? That would have been quite amusing.

I dont think they did having watched all of DB recently but there might have been a small part.

Can't remember a nine-tailed fox demon in JttW? Don't think there was one in the book...

But then again, the only nine-tailed fox I will remember my whole life is the most famous nine-tailed demon fox, Daji from Feng Shen Yan Yi / Houshin Engi / 'Creation of the Gods'.

And Ninetails from Pokémon. >.>

No there was a 9 tailed fox in JttW, she was an old female fox demon. She had two children which I am not sure if they were the two demons mentioned earlier with the gourd. But in the book, Sun Wu Kung smashed her brains open to discover her true form, a nine tailed fox demon. He then changes in to her and enters her childrens cave in hope to rescue his master and 'brother's'

Although I know that resembles nothing that I have seen in DB, it would have made a nice filler episode. I was just curious if this inspired any episode in DB.

Oh yeah, I know what you're talking about. Didn't remember her because she was killed rather fast in the book :P

Don't remember though whether her children were Ginkaku and Kinkaku though, I know that in the Hong Kong series of JttW II she was indeed the mother of them, but that series wasn't actually following the book to the word and they used several elements from the book for one story.

I hope this post is not considered 'bumping' but after searching for the Manga on www.amazon.co.uk. I have found all 16 volumes of the Manga but for volumes 4 and 5, I could not find the volumes which had a RED background.

I want to know if there is a difference in the content because of this or if the cover is the only difference.

See, Mike should really clear up what exactly necroposting is so we don't live in fear and people who are only normal members run around declaring what is and isn't...

And I don't THINK there's a difference in content... Viz just re-released the manga 100 times.

I thought the new(ish) Shonen Jump books were censored, more than Viz's original release. At least, the Dragonball Z ones are.
... Maybe later.
