Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
Demon Spiral Drill sounds bad ass btw. Sounds as if Piccolo is about to pierce through the heavens with his drill.

Yeah, little things like that, calling her father "pa" and saying things like "fixen diner" would be enough for me.batistabus wrote: I hear people complaining all the time that the voice actress pronounces her son's name as "Geau-han" due to her southern accent. Hell, I could of lived with "drilling beam canon", getting rid of the stupid special would of made all the difference. Not that I'm complaining with the literal use of Makankosappo mind you!Kaboom wrote:I'd bet if they'd translated Makankosappo into something good like 'Demon Spiral Drill' ('Evil Spiral Drill' for TV?) from the beginning, we'd all be used to it and love it.

Did anybody else love how serious he sounded saying "It's called a Double Sunday..."?JulieYBM wrote:I know they used Double Sunday...but did they use Saturday Crush, too?! O.o
I personally cracked up when he said it, and could not for the life of me say such a line seriously myself.
Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
An "Education-Minded Mama" would try to speak with less of a "yokel" dialect for the sake of her son's early language development skills anyways, if she was as high strung about it as Chi-Chi seemed to be. A great scholar definitely avoids using words such as "ain't", "comin' ", "Pa", and other such things.
Was Chi-Chi's "hickish" dialect still in the manga during the Z era? I have way too much crap in front of the shelf I keep my manga on to go see.
I just can't take the mental image of Chi-Chi with the American equivalent of a "hick" accent very serious.

Not to mention "Bomber DX". God, the Budokai series had some weird attack names.Big Momma wrote:Does that mean we'd get back Saturday Crush?Innagadadavida wrote:Nothing sounds as cool as Makankosappo. And really, if I were director, I'd make decisions based on what sounds coolest.

Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
What the hell did the DX stand for anyway?
Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
Well I think the point is Chi-Chi, as a parent, wants a better education/upbringing/future than what she got. That is the goal of most parents. That however doesn't mean she'd morph into a totally different person for the sake of her son, nor do I think it's humanly possible. I'd say all that studying helped Gohan's intelligence/ dialect , Chi-Chi's "slang" wouldn't really factor in his development.Mewzard wrote:An "Education-Minded Mama" would try to speak with less of a "yokel" dialect for the sake of her son's early language development skills anyways, if she was as high strung about it as Chi-Chi seemed to be.
I'm sure that was also part of Toriyama's humor, having a less than "delicate" woman pushing her Son to be all proper.
Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
Of course, but, clearly, Chi-Chi did change herself into a totally different person for Gohan. Just look at Chi-Chi in DB, then Chi-Chi in DBZ, she changed to a high degree for him. She was so obsessed, I wouldn't be surprised if she tried to improve her language skills. Much of one's learning potential is in the early years, which is why Chi-Chi makes him study so hard.
And one's language skills do affect their kids, to a degree. Despite my own focus on education and always trying to avoid accents, to say I haven't picked up enough where the occasional drop of a g might happen, especially in quick speech. But, I've focused on avoiding that by will, so it's not common.
And I agree, I was just making a point of a possible interpretation. To the average American, the dialect shift between Chi-Chi and Goku, and other characters is less jarring in Japanese. In English? It would be notable and probably knocked if they went from more proper English of some characters to Hick accents, which would most likely (either intentionally or not) sound like a satire.

Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
Obsessed? In the Z anime maybe, but in the manga or Kai, not really. Chi-Chi was just a mom that wanted the best for her son. My father used to swear like a sailor around me growing up, but as an adult I never swear in a conversation. So to me it's perfectly feasible for Chi-Chi to be a slight "hick" around Gohan without it affecting him any.
Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
Usually, though, those are semi-conscious efforts, or desires set in youth. Well, dependent on age. Even in the manga, she's put him into school at a very early age, and worries about his education at several points in the series.
But like I said, I was just trying to figure a possible way to look at things. Can you honestly picture Chi-Chi speaking with a "hick" accent (of the English variety, with the more commonly parodied mannerisms present *as Funi's going to at least make it somewhat clear to the viewing audience if they do*) and not find it either hilarious, or at least harder to take her serious?

Depends entirely how it's done, I would prefer a subtle equivalent, I do not want Beverley hillbilly's here. I would of liked some bad grammar used with Goku, and some "mountain slang" for Chi-Chi, no "accents" are really necessary for either of them. I feel little touches like that would of gone a long way to giving there characters more "flavor" in English.Mewzard wrote: But like I said, I was just trying to figure a possible way to look at things. Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
I'd like a southern accent on Chi Chi...then again I find them hot so I'm a little biased. (Also English accents are super hot too, can we at least make her that?

Which is especially stupid because Soul Reaper is the official English name in the Japanese version of the anime. The Japanese version of the comic on the other hand uses Death as the English name for Shinigami.Super Sonic wrote:Thing I thought was kinda funny/weird was that Viz had been using "Soul Reaper" in the manga even before the Bleach anime premiered in Japan, but no one complained until the dub premiered then people started calling them blasphemous.
Who are those people? Lol.Super Sonic wrote:Would you really want Chi Chi sounding like Cannonball, Rogue, or Brandine?
I've certainly never complained about her pronunciation of Gohan. She shouldn't just talk like Gokuh; she should speak a bit more hick-like than just that.batistabus wrote:I hear people complaining all the time that the voice actress pronounces her son's name as "Geau-han" due to her southern accent. An example of what I mean is "Gohan! Are you wakin' up? Relax! It's Ma! It's your Ma!"
And here's a good exchange between Yajirove and Chichi.
Yajirove: "Hey! This is fine 'n' all, but y'r Gokuh's wife, right? Stop worrin' about just the kid, and look after y'r husband, would ya?"
Chichi: "How rude! Nothin' doin'."

Cannonball
Rogue (not really hick, but Southern belle. Was just saying at the time, but kinda wrong).
Brandine (along with her husband Cletus, aka Cletus the Slack Jawed Yokel)
Interestingly enough, Cynthia Cranz actually does talk with a Southern accent normally. She just doesn't use it with any characters she voices.Blue wrote:I'd like a southern accent on Chi Chi...then again I find them hot so I'm a little biased. I know who Rogue is, but not the other two. I don't remember how Rogue talks at all.
