According to the WHOIS info Chuquita posted, planetnamek.com is owned by MDNH Inc. Planetnamek.com also currently has an MDNH copyright notice at the bottom. If you want to buy the domain try emailing that "Brendhan Hight" guy listed on the WHOIS record. If that doesn't work, you could also try contacting Marchex, that's the company that owns the address listed on the WHOIS record.

If it costs a lot then would anyone here be willing to donate up to $20 to help buy it back?

Not if lots of people donated. There's strength in numbers.

Could someone explain what robots.txt is, how it gets applied to a site or remove, and why companies decide to use it? I'm curious why someone would close PN's archives just for the hell of it.

I searched Google for "robots.txt" and this is the first result I got:
Web Robots (also known as Web Wanderers, Crawlers, or Spiders), are programs that traverse the Web automatically. Search engines such as Google use them to index the web content, spammers use them to scan for email addresses, and they have many other uses.
It comes from http://www.robotstxt.org/ and there's more info if you feel like looking into it.

If you guys are desperate enough, I could probably convince my boss to buy it back. The MAJOR catch would be that I would have to convince him to treat it as a URL squatting of a closed hentai website. In other words, the main page would have nothing but a couple of site banners pertaining to websites we own, as well as a small paragraph loaded with keywords linking to our content related to hentai sites. Ex:

"Planetnamek.com (link that to a part of the old site for you check out the archived content) may be gone, but that doesn't mean you can't still find lots of hot dragon ball boobies (link that to our hentai-related content) over at thecompanyIworkfor.com (link that to a website of the company I work for). That's because they know that nothing's hotter than dragonballz sex hardcore (link that to other hentai-related content we have), so they make sure you've got all the best information to help you find the raunchiest cartoon dragon balls sex (link that to even more hentai-related content) this side of the galaxy! So what are you waiting for? Go check out thecompanyIworkfor.com (link that to a website of the company I work for) to see the hottest planet namek hentai pics! (link that to yet even more of our hentai-related content)"

So.... anyone desperate enough? :P

That part is very simple, all somebody needs to do is upload a file called "robots.txt" to the root directory of the site the domain is connected to. This is the contents of the planetnamek.com robots.txt file:

User-agent: *
Disallow: /
Disallow: /-/results/

Crawl-delay: 0.0

What it's saying there (and it's a bit overkill, actually) is that any user-agent is disallowed from indexing anything from the root directory onward. I'm not exactly familiar with the "crawl-delay" part, but it's kinda funny considering its resemblance to a particular emoticon.

Why was it created? Was it created to combat the web archive?

And why do websites insist on using it? It's not like PN used to be a porn site, what are they trying to hide?

I answered you once already. Web crawlers can be used to collect information for spam purposes. Robots.txt prevents tat. An unfortunate side effect is the inability to archive the content.

It was more effective when frames were a large part of web design, as the indexing the robots would do could result in some screwed up links in search engines. So, if you had a website which utilized frames, you would want to set a robots.txt to tell the robots how to properly index your site.

As for planetnamek.com at this point in time, the robots.txt has nothing to do with the original content but the setup the current owners of the domain have. There's a very good chance they aren't even interested in anything Dragon Ball but could have been interested in the domain because of the traffic it once generated. Such companies generally buy popular domains and then just slap a generic website up which usually has little to nothing to do with the original source material.

An odd exception would be wwf.com, especially after the lengthy legal battle between the then-WWFs, which had the wrestling WWF forced to change their name and wwf.com, while no longer owned by WWE, is still wrestling-centric as wwf.com redirects to a wrestling search engine with a number of links to WWE-related searches.

Strangely, I once got an email asking me if I would be interested in selling my old GeoCities account and it didn't even have a dedicated domain name. Needless to say, I didn't see the point nor the legality of selling something which didn't belong to me.

I don't see the point in buying a popular name like PN. Most everyone going there just wants to see the old site then sees all these weird links and is like, "well this sucks."

Seriously- what kind of a person would buy spam garbage off the current page?

http://www.planetnamek.com/

They'd likely seek out sites they're familiar with instead it'd seem like. (like Amazon)

I do miss Planet Namek sometimes, I recall them having their own forums as well.

I had a weird dream that the domain owner responded but he was a complete dick and refused to sell for any price.

Planet Namek has been gone for years and years and years. Nobody under the age of 21 probably even remembers that place anymore.
