Toriyama making the big money
Re: Toriyama making the big money
I've always been curious about this too. I wonder what he got more money on. Would it be the manga, anime, merchandise(most likely), or just licensing? How much of the profits does he get?
If you're not here soon... GET ON!
Re: Toriyama making the big money
Keep in mind that this is Japan we're talking about, that Toriyama was basically an employee of Jump, and that he's an extremely humble man who doesn't seem fond of actively objecting to things, even when he clearly doesn't like them...GS7X7 wrote: And aren't there rumors he was heavily bribed by SJ/Toei to continue DB after the Freeza saga when he supposedly really wanted it to end?
I hear that in Japan, when someone makes a request, it's extremely rude to refuse, politely or otherwise. ... Can anyone confirm/deny/clarify?
... Wait a second...
... Toriyama has more money than me. He is also unlikely to flat-out refuse a request...

There are indeed rumors like that, but they're completely unfounded.GS7X7 wrote:And aren't there rumors he was heavily bribed by SJ/Toei to continue DB after the Freeza saga when he supposedly really wanted it to end?

Re: Toriyama making the big money
I wonder where that old rumor of Toriyama wanted to end DBZ at the Freeza arc came from? I always thought he wanted to end it at the Cell arc not the Freeza arc?

Re: Toriyama making the big money
I think that rumor predates that by a long time. It was around the late 90's or early 2000's iirc. It was sort of accepted as fan gospel.
Is there anyway to prove or disprove this rumor?

Sean Schemmel is THE MAN! :)

Re: Toriyama making the big money
The short answer is that Toriyama has mentioned in many interviews that he never intended DB to run anywhere near as long as it did. Originally he was planning on it not going past the very first search for the dragonballs, then he planned on it ended after only 9 volunes, then he wanted it to continue "just a little bit" past the 23rd Tenkaichi Budoukai (the 'Z' in DBZ comes from Toriyama thinking it was going to end soon). The common rumor about him planning on ending it after the Freeza story arc but being bribed/forced into continuing is a distortion of these facts. Again, Toriyama has mentioned several times that he planned on ending it sooner, but the only specifically mentioned early ending is the first dragonball search. And the rumors generally either imply or outright state that the decision to continue on past Freeza was some last minute change (one common claim being that when everyone thought Goku was dead, at this point Toriyama still intended that Goku actually would be dead), but the chances of this are very slim. In all likelihood, Toriyama knew when drawing the end of the Freeza arc that the manga would still be continuing, in much the same way that by the time volume 9 rolled around he almost certainly knew that the series would not be ending there, despite he early plans to finish it off around that point.GS7X7 wrote:I think that rumor predates that by a long time. Anyway, that's the short(ish) answer. For a longer answer, well, I've been wanting to make a thread about all this for awhile, and maybe now's the time to finally do it.

Yeah just because you do something famous doesn't mean you are rich. Hopefully he's done well though, he did start all this. That's kind of a big deal.

You also have to remember he's a designer. His clients probably pay him a lot because he's famous.

Haha, I highly doubt that. I've seen people say, "Yeah, I can't find the interview, but it's common knowledge! It's been the truth for years!" Some people just can't tell when something's a silly rumor...Piccolo Daimao wrote:Yeah, it would put an end to this shit once and for all.dbgtFO wrote:That would be AWESOME!!Herms wrote:Anyway, that's the short(ish) answer.
