Favourite Funi Casting Choices for DBZ
I was watching Funi's redub of DBZ Movie 2 the other day, and man, DR. Kochin sounded like a fucking nut! The voice actor did such a great job, even better than the original Ocean Dub actor (and his Spongebob laugh).
So, what are your favourite casting choices?

Re: Favourite Funimation Voice Actors for DBZ
Brian Jackson's Oolong
Eric Vale's Future Trunks
Yajirobe (the actor escapes me)
Sonny Strait's (post season 3, I liked the ocean guy a lot though.) Kuririn
Dameon Clarke's Perfect Cell
Meredith McCoy's Android 18 (but I love Miki Ito)
Kyle Hebert's Teen Gohan
Chris Rager's Mr. Satan
whoever did Dabura and Babidi
..and I think that's about it. The others I either tolerate or just think are "okay".

*list*
Looks like we agree on quite a few of those. I forgot to include Brice Armstrong, Justin Cook, Chuck Huber and Kent Williams. They were good choices. Dende was always pretty okay by my book as well. Chris Ayres is excellent as Freeza too.
I didn't hate his Roshi, but you could always tell it was a guy trying to do an old man voice. Although there were certain times where he did a pretty good job. I preferred the ocean dub guy (not the one who was in movies 1-3, he was awful).DB_Fan1991 wrote:Yes he played Master Roshi as well.

Mike McFarland is definitely not a great Roshi. But he's probably the best dub Roshi thus far.
Ian Corlett? He sounded like one of those old miner stereotypes. He sounds like that one doll Meatwad had in ATHF that danced. Kelamis' didn't sound any better. And Klassen's? It sounded like Kuririn doing an impression of Roshi.
McFarland is doing "old man voice" just as much as any of them, but he has a little more enthusiasm and a laugh that can't be beat. He's not great, but he's not bad, either.

I'll be honest, I haven't watched the Ocean dub in quite a while, so me claiming my preference for him may just be out of blind nostalgia because I heard him first. But yeah, I think McFarland did a good job in the Dragon Ball dub. (In season 3 of Z and even some of the Android filler stuff, it felt like he was still "finding his place" as many of the other actors were at the time.) Later on in Z he was just fine though...and I do enjoy the laugh! So I think I might be going back on what I originally said.

Re: Favourite Funi Casting Choices for DBZ
I like most of the FUNimation voice cast, but here's the major ones worth mentioning.
Chris Ayres as Freeza. I know, the topic title says Z, not Kai, but I don't give a damn. The awesomeness of this casting transcends the metaphysical barriers of its own sub-series and radiates onto others.
Chuck Huber and Meredith McCoy as Androids 17 and 18. The dub of the Trunks special is downright AWFUL, but lord knows those are some amazing casting choices for the two of them. They sound really menacing, even with the horrible script. Come to think of it, Chuck Huber makes a pretty damn good Garlic Jr and Emperor Pilaf, too.
Sean Schemmel as Son Goku. He started out really bad back in the in-house dub's early days, but he's improved drastically over the years. Now, he IS "Goku in English" to me, and his work in Kai has shown that he's finally and truly deserving of the role, even if it took a while for him to get there.
Kara Edwards as Goten. 'Nuff said. Laura Bailey does a good job with Kid Trunks and her few other roles, too.
That said, Eric Vale is a pretty good adult Trunks.
Chris Rager as Mr. Satan. Nobody short of the late great Daisuke Gori himself has portrayed the character so spot-on.
Sonny Strait as just about anybody he's voiced. His Kuririn is endearing and very appropriate. His awesome Bardock voice may have not been able to save the awful dub of the Bardock special, not even when combined with Solid State Scouter... but it certainly helps dull the pain a great deal. At least he's had a few short opportunities to shine in Kai.
I've really come to like Chris Sabat as both Piccolo and Vegeta. Both characters are shining quite brightly in Kai as of late. His other roles are really too minor in comparison to those two (yes, including Yamcha) for me to care about.
I didn't like Stephanie Nadolny as Gohan, but I liked her much better as Goku, even if just because the voice sounded more age-appropriate. It'll be a bit sad to see her replaced, but I'm sure Colleen Clinkenbeard will do a good job in her stead.
Broly is a sucky character, but Vic Mignogna is by no means a sucky voice actor.
Daemon Clarke's Perfect Cell is intimidating and powerful. Travis Willingham is doing fine as his replacement, too.

Chris Rager - Mr. Satan. Very funny, he represented the character very well.
Duncan Brannan - Babidi. I watched an old "Making of Budokai 3" video and he seemed like he had a lot of fun voicing him.
Mike McFarland - Master Roshi. His laugh brings a smile to my face every time.
Brice Armstrong - Captain Ginyu. Great actor, I was very disappointed when he retired and didn't reprise his role in Kai.
Dameon Clarke - Cell. He played Cell very well.
Chris Sabat - Vegeta and Piccolo. He really improved once he stopped trying to imitate Brian Drummond.
Kara Edwards - Goten and Videl. Great actress, hoping she returns for Kai.
Funi's casting improved immensely when the Android/Cell Saga started. Aside from a corny dub joke here and there, (and Gohan's SSJ2 monologue) I enjoyed the dub throughout the rest of the series.

Re: Favourite Funi Casting Choices for DBZ
Honestly, I don't mind most of them nowadays; the video games aren't hard to stomach in English, but the standouts are:
Stephanie Nadolny as Son Goku - It might be that boyish sounding voice of hers, but I think she really gave Goku an innocence that rivaled Nozawa. When she had to do scenes where Goku is angry, she goes above and beyond as well; so much so I'd say she makes Schemmel look pretty bad in comparison, who I've never felt really got that part of Goku down(he's fine with "happy simpleton" Goku). A joy in DBGT, as well. Too bad about the DB Movie 1 deal.
Sonny Strait as Kuririn - What can I say, he just captures the guy perfectly. I've always found Kuririn to be the "normal guy," character, as his reactions to the events that occur are always more down to earth than anyone else's, and Strait makes it feel real, which is pretty important to a character who comes off as "real" in the first place. Terry Klassen had an alright voice, but the acting was far too animated.
Christopher Sabat as Piccolo - Noooot so great during the recordings of the actual show, but in later games and Kai, it's just outstanding. It's interesting how different the performance is from Furukawa in terms of the actual sound of their voices. Sabat's is pretty low while Furukawa's is somewhere higher, but not high-pitched. Perhaps if Sabat's voice wasn't so low he could've done Adult Goku; he doesn't seem to have a problem changing between calm and upset.
Brad Jackson as Oolong - I just found it hilarious, considering he's five years old when we meet him. It's a far cry from the original voice, but I think the point came across nicely, as that voice is almost equally silly-sounding(but I guess you could argue that voice fits a five-year-old...).
