I've been watching via the DragonBox singles. But when I get to episode 29-57 I'm gonna use the 2-disc FUNi DVDs I have for subs.

I'm currently on episode 10, and I'm watching the only version of DB I own: FUNi's 1995 dub. Bulma's voice is really starting to piss me off. She keeps doing this high pitched squeak. I realize that this is her trying to sound like a stuck up 16-year-old girl, but it gets so irritating...! >_<

VOICES
Acting is really top notch; the Vancouver voice pool is really something. I just wish FUNi had made an uncut dub back then. I'm sure it would have been above FUNi's 2001 dub in terms of acting quality and voices.

I'm really loving Gokuh's voice (Henderson can sound like a real boy), Yamcha's voice (Cole fits the role so well), Pilaf's voice (Brown nowhere near as awesome as Shigeru, but he does quite well), Mai's voice (sometimes she's a little too old/tough sounding, but I generally like it), the Gyuh-Maoh's voice (Ward does well at making him sound like a large bodied hick), and the narrator (Conrad has a nice storytelling type voice that makes Dragon Ball's story seem more like a mystical legend).

I'm definitely hating Bulma's voice (Lindbjerg CAN sound good, though [like she did in DBZ]) and Pu-ehr's voice (Morse made him into a female Briton).

And these voices I don't hate, but have minor issues with: Oolong's (Willows' voice, like nearly every other Eng. voice for the character, sounds a little too "pig"-like), Shuh's (Parker gives him a weird sound to his voice that bothers me), the Turtle Hermit's (Donovan's Turtle Hermit isn't the worst, but it's certainly not very good), and Chichi's (Libman's Chichi annoys me a little...).

MUSIC
Rather boring. It's "just there". Though, I must admit that the theme song (called "Main Title") is quite catchy. :D

STORY
It's made me laugh quite a few times, but there's also plenty of corny dialogue that clearly doesn't belong. Also, Gokuh should NOT know what rigor mortis is... :/
I'd say the script is about 80% accurate. Most of the changes are due to censorship, so it's not like it's full of stupid, pointless dialogue like DBZ was (clearly they had a translator for these episodes, or maybe Fukanaga knows Japanese and wasn't feeling lazy). But because of the missing 80%, I feel like this isn't Dragon Ball. It's truly a weird feeling, 'cause it LOOKS like Dragon Ball, but it isn't. If this were a later story arc where there was less perverted jokes, it would have been more like 90% Dragon Ball, most likely.

I'm curious about the context of that rigor mortis line.

Cheers. :) Yeah, Goku shouldn't know what rigor mortis is, especially when he doesn't know what shirt or panties mean.

Shuh/Shao's robot, uh... "Repo Robot" is "repossessing" the Dragon Balls and runs off, then leaves the robot behind as he gets a ride from Mai. Then, Gokuh finds the empty robot, it falls over, he pokes it with his Nyoi-boh, and says "Oh... rigor mortis. Must be dead.".

I do like Gokuh's line he says when Shuh first takes off with the DBs.
Bulma: "That thief just stole our Dragon Balls!"
Gokuh: "Re-po-sessed them."

I decided to rent and watch FUNi's 2001 dub. Let's see how they did on their second try... Better? Worse?

VOICES
Overall, the acting isn’t near as good as the first dub. Some things annoyed me: Oolong's bull form being Spanish, the voice of his robot form, and... The villagers of Aru Village have people imitating their voices from the first dub. That’s not the problem, though. The problem is that the village woman (not the old one) had an obviously electronically modified voice. But, only her first appearance that episode; when she's running into Oolong's hideout, her voice is normal. And then, one of the kidnapped girls has a modified voice...and apparently it's contagious, 'cause one of the girls that had a normal voice suddenly goes all electronically modified when she’s off screen. :? Oh, and Chichi sometimes has her voice modified as well.

Great: Narrator (Armstrong has an old man type voice that makes the story sound like an ancient fairytale).

Awful: Bulma (Vollmer’s sounds less annoying that Lindjberg’s, but her acting talent is non-existent), Seaturtle (sounds literally stupid), Gyuh-Maoh (sounds literally retarded).

Acceptable: Gokuh (Nadolny’s acting isn’t too great, and her Gokuh sounds a bit too rough and gravelly), Pilaf (Huber's sounds a LOT like Brown’s, but just isn’t as awesome), Shuh (Cason's just sounds off...), Mai (Franklin's sounds kinda boring/generic), the Turtle Hermit (McFarland isn’t bad at all, but it’s not quite the perverted old man/wise master/funky old dude voice I’d hope for; it’s just a funky old dude part), Oolong (Jackson's is also too “pig”-like), Pu-ehr (Antonelli's is too high pitched at times), Yamcha (Sabat fits the character pretty well, but the voice reminds me of Yusuke from YuYu Hakusho...), Chichi (Bailey's is less annoying, but is electronically modified at times…and sounds a bit too old at times).

STORY
Script is only slightly better than their first dub. Sadly, the script is mostly recycled, and when dialogue is changed, it’s usually not better. They did fix a few odd lines, and having Bulma look around for a peephole in Oolong's bathroom was, surprisingly, a good dialogue change they made, but then they changed an accurate line into “[The Ox King] paid some magical wizard to create a fire to protect his castle from thieves…and then it raged out of control.”... I'd say the script is just an inaccurate as before, but since the music is 1000 times better, this dub feels about 90% Dragon Ball.

Soppa Saiyjins from Dorgou Ballru Zetto is my favorite transformation everah, especially when Trounksoru did it in front of Seru and when Bejita did it when he faced Jingonigen-hachigo. But for real, I use the FUNi pronunciation. - Soppa Saia People

It's November 18th, time to get started on the next batch of episodes. This should take us through the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai. I'm starting a new job soon so hopefully I'll have enough free time to watch all these.

Well, I also decided to watch the Westwood Dub. Sadly I can only find the first six episodes. I'd say it's about as good as the 2001 FUNi dub; no better, no worse. A couple interesting things to note: Gokuh isn't allowed to pat-pat the village girl ("Pokawatha") on Canadian TV, but he can pat-pat the old lady... :? And Gokuh's Nyoi-boh is actually called the Nyoi-boh! :D

VOICES
The acting is generally quite poor.

Great: Narrator (his voice sounds like it belongs narrating Dragon Ball), Shuh (fits the characters and doesn't have an annoying quality to it), Seaturtle (I really like this voice for him; fitting and doesn't make him sound stupid), Oolong (fits the characters and doesn't have an annoying "pig"-like sound to it).

Awful: None! :D

Acceptable: Gokuh (poor acting, a lot like Nadolny's, but more frequently grating), Bulma (acting is as bad as Vollmer's at first, but it seems to improve slightly. At least it's not annoying sounding in any way), Pilaf (similar to Huber's, but not as good), Mai (too gentle sounding, and generic), the Turtle Hermit (boring, generic old man voice), Yamcha (not "cool" enough to make a truly good Yamcha. Sometimes reminds me of Hiei from YuYu Hakusho...), Pu-ehr (not high-pitched enough).

STORY
The script is just as bad as FUNi's. Basically they just used FUNi's old script, and FUNi's new script, and tweaked them. Although they sometimes got some things right that FUNi got wrong, they also got things wrong that FUNi got right. 90% Dragon Ball.

I liked the line after the Turtle Hermit pushes Pilaf, Shuh, and Mai out to sea. The Turtle Hermit says "Goodbye! Enjoy the bottom of the sea!", and Pilaf replies with a "Thank you~!" as their ship floats away.

Here's something stupid from the script: apparently Gokuh ate Bulma's hand lotion...
