Liu Xing Long a male or female?

Post by Shineman » Wed Nov 24, 2010 2:19 pm

There some arguments that suggest Liu Xing Long is really a male, not female. is this true? Does GT Perfect Files say something about Liu's gender?

Also, just in case for those who don't know who Liu Xing Long is, it Oceanus Shenron, born from the underwear wish.

I know the source isn't a databook, but the wiki says Liu Xing Long is female, eventhough her true form seems to be of a male.

I haven't watched GT in years, so forgive me if I'm incorrect, but wasn't Xing based on Toyotama-hime? So I'm guessing she is indeed female.

EDIT: DB wiki says she went by the name Princess Oto, guess she is based on Toyotama-hime.

Of course it is, but since Liu's true form is rather ugly looking (i.e. not fitting the standard for female characters), it is normal to wonder what is Liu's true gender.

Just because her true form is ugly and not "standard" for a female doesn't mean she isn't female.
If anyone says, that her true form is too ugly for it to be considered female, then they have some major problems with their perception of males and females.

Uranai Baba is a woman after all and she wouldn't be considered desirable, by most males in the Real World, but that doesn't change the fact, that she is female.

BTW does Liu Xing Long's voice change, when she reaches her true form?

It's a monster. I think it has no true gender.

When it when to it's true form, it had a deep male voice though.

Yes, her form as well as her voice changed.

In fact, for a long time I thought it was male like the rest of the Dark Dragons.

If Liu Xing Long isn't female, then perhaps she is just gender-neutral with feminine characteristics. Like how Namekians are genderless, yet they are all masculine.

The Perfect Files don't shed any light on this (Japanese generally being gender-neutral when talking about people). Liu Xing Long's true form doesn't have any obviously female characteristics, but it's a dragon, so who knows what a female dragon would look or sound like?

The DB wikia is crap, so don't use it as a source for anything.

Liu Xing Long's disguise is quite explicitly based on Otohime (aka Toyotama), but that doesn't mean the character is really female.

*Head-desk*

"Otohime" means a younger princess (ie the later-born daughter of a king). It's not a princess who happens to be named "Oto". Good to see Funi hasn't learned anything at all since the days of "King Kai" and "Princess Snake".

Oh, well, I don't know Japanese at all. I had assumed it meant Princess Oto also. Thanks for correcting.

I don't think any of the dragons, including those in GT, have a true gender. Why? Because they were made by Namekians, who don't seem to have any real concept of male and female. I'd think this would hold true to their creations as well, but then again, it's GT, which makes it a lot less straightforward most of the time.

I remember thinking this dragon was male last time I watched the episode, but I can't remember why... I guess it's more logical to say that they're genderless.

I make it easy on myself, and establish my own gender for "genderless" characters by using voice as a guide. And 99.999% of the time, if the character's voice is deep, they're a dude.

Missed most of the Evil Dragons eps, but how did Oceanus' voice sound? Was he/she/it voiced by a man, or a woman?

Yeah I think the Shadow Dragons are genderless like the Namekians are. I mean they're born from wishes not by breeding with one another.

No, the princess form is voiced by a woman, Masako Matsuki, while the true form is by a man, Ryuuzaburou Ootomo*.

*Heh, Ryuuzaburou. I guess it was a role he was born to play.

No problem. Just to be clear, I wasn't annoyed at you, but simply at Funi's endlessly silly naming scheme.

Oh, no, no, it's cool. I figured that it was Funi you were irritated at.
But I am really glad you did correct me, because I had been under the assumption that otohime = Princess Oto for too long.
One day I'll actually make the effort to learn Japanese ... one day ...

Haha, indeed! He's the guy with the manly voice that was chosen to replace some of Daisuke Gori's roles, huh? Seems like the dragon was really intended to be a male. Like I said, even the princess form looks like a man in disguise, really.
