Bob Sapp > Mr. Satan?
I remember a while ago someone telling me about an interview in which Akira Toriyama openly stated Mark would lose to legit MMA fighter Bob Sapp in a one-on-one fight. Could someone shed some light on this, or perhaps provide a link to said interview?

Re: Bob Sapp > Mr. Satan?
That's in the book DB Forever. In a Q&A, Toriyama is asked how strong Mister Satan is, and he answers that "I think he's pretty strong. But...I get the feeling he's not quite as strong as Bob Sapp (laughs)".

So was it tongue in cheek, or can we take it as a fact stated by the Author himself?

Mr. Satan would be losing but hear his fans cheer him on, only for him to pull off a one in a million victory. </idk>

Re: Bob Sapp > Mr. Satan?
Despite AT joking around I do think it raises an interesting question as Satan is one of few DB universe characters that fight and could actually more or less be placed in our universe since he doesn't have any super powers. Even though he is portrayed as a weakling by the Z fighters standards he is still one of the strongest regular guys around.
I think Mr. Satan would be among the top Martial Artists in this world. The fact that he could pull multiple busses and rip multiple phonebooks put him pretty much at the top strength wise. Keep in mind he is muscular, but doesn't have a bodybuilder physique and still has that kind of strength. On top of that he seems like an expert in several martial arts so yeah in real world terms I think he'd be a top MMA/K1/BOXING competitor. That interview must be from when Bob Sapp was still new to fighting, because back then he actually had some impressive victories, but once he got figured out by other fighters he wasn't much at all.

Re: Bob Sapp > Mr. Satan?
The book came out on April 30th, 2004. Looking through Wikipedia, it turns out that Bob Sapp won the IWGP Heavyweight Championship a month earlier, on March 28th. So when Toriyama was being interviewed, there was probably a lot of hype in Japan about Sapp being the strongest guy around. So it would make sense for Toriyama to joke about Satan not measuring up to Sapp.Tenshinhan-san wrote:That interview must be from when Bob Sapp was still new to fighting, because back then he actually had some impressive victories, but once he got figured out by other fighters he wasn't much at all.

Re: Bob Sapp > Mr. Satan?
That was back when Sapp's popularity in Japan was tremendously huge, primarily due to his Hulk-like physique.
Even to this day, Bob Sapp vs. Akebono is still the highest-rated fight ever to air free on Japanese television. Which I don't doubt Toriyama was one of those watching it.

Bodybuilding focuses on size, not strength. To a point, those two go hand in hand, but they aren't tied together.Tenshinhan-san wrote:Keep in mind he is muscular, but doesn't have a bodybuilder physique and still has that kind of strength.

Can Bob Sapp pull a bus?
Kentai wrote:Son Gokuu is a fascinating character anyway, because he is - at face value, anyway - an idiot savant. But he's also a fighter, through and through [...] he fight until he has, in no uncertain terms, beaten his enemy on terms they can both acknowledge. He doesn't want to kill anyone, or even prove that he can win... he just wants to know he can. He's an ineffably charming bastard who's manly leanings were really incendental, and yes, the fact that he was voiced by a squeaky woman made the combination perhaps all the more charming.

Re: Bob Sapp > Mr. Satan?
True. Unfortunately, matchups like those ultimately quickened K-1's & Kakutogi's downfall in general in Japan to the point where FEG wonders if they will still exist come 2011. Sad story really. But I'm getting off topic, lol. That was back when Sapp's popularity in Japan was tremendously huge, primarily due to his Hulk-like physique.

Correct, but still seeing a more or less regular sized guy pull of these feets of insane strength is kind of uncommon.Bodybuilding focuses on size, not strength. To a point, those two go hand in hand, but they aren't tied together.
Ultimately, the guys in strongest man contests with the biggest/ most records are these Broli'ish juiced up guys like Mariusz Pudzianowski, who, ironically isn't doing to well in actual combat since he started competing in MMA.
In weightlifting, records are set by huge men, not necessarily Broli juiced as lots of em are even fairly tubby, but at the very least Super Heavyweights of 120+kilo's.
Satan is portrayed as a heavyeight, maybe superheavyweight, but not much more than a 100 kilo guy I'd presume. Are there any official stats for him from any of the guides? Of Course we're looking perhaps a bit too deep into it, but it is an interesting topic.
I remember a couple years ago K-1's most popular (super)heavyweight fighters entered a strongest man contest for some PR thing and all of them pulled busses. I don't know if Sapp was part of that group, but these were men like Peter Aerts who is around 110 Kilo's and while beingCan Bob Sapp pull a bus?
a far better fighter than Sapp he is a great deal weaker physically. If he pulled a bus, Sapp is able to as well.

Did Mr. Satan pull a bus in the manga? I don't recall a scene like that. Sounds like some Cell Games filler...

Yes, in the manga Mister Satan never did anything else than breaking tiles...Chibi Mystic Gohan wrote:Did Mr. Satan pull a bus in the manga? I don't recall a scene like that. Sounds like some Cell Games filler...
Re: Bob Sapp > Mr. Satan?
It's filler, yeah. So is him ripping phone books in half. In the manga we only see him break that pile of tiles, really.Chibi Mystic Gohan wrote:Did Mr. Satan pull a bus in the manga? I don't recall a scene like that. Sounds like some Cell Games filler...

Either way, pulling a bus is not such an increadible feat. It's not that far different from pushing a car out of fuel. Seriously, they have wheel, they were made to move!

This doesn't do as much for comparative purposes to real life people, but he also beats up the two villains who shoot the dog and sets the record on the punching machine at the 25th T.B.Bussani wrote:It's filler, yeah. The SEG: Character Volume puts him at 188 cm and 94 kg.Tenshinhan-san wrote:Satan is portrayed as a heavyeight, maybe superheavyweight, but not much more than a 100 kilo guy I'd presume. Are there any official stats for him from any of the guides?

Re: Bob Sapp > Mr. Satan?
That's a heavyweight alright. Not a big one, but a heavyweight.
Funny if you consider an absolute beast like Tenshinhan only being something around 75 kilos according to the guides and other muscular guys like Yamucha weighing in at just 68 kilos. Maybe in their early DB days, but definitely not in their primes between the Frieza and Buu era.

Re: Bob Sapp > Mr. Satan?
Yeah, Yamcha's weight of 68 kg first appeared in the Bouken Special, which came out when the manga was still halfway through the Daimao arc. And they just kept using that as his weight in later guidebooks (and even in the anime, when 19 and 20 scan him), without thinking to update it to reflect how Yamcha changed over the years. Same thing happened with Tenshinhan's weight.Tenshinhan-san wrote:Funny if you consider an absolute beast like Tenshinhan only being something around 75 kilos according to the guides and other muscular guys like Yamucha weighing in at just 68 kilos.
