Blaze's 508 Episiode Journey (Episode 3!)

Post by BlazeGogeta » Sun Feb 27, 2011 8:24 pm

Hey there! I'm Blaze, a brand new DragonBall fan.
I'm going to be watching through all 508 episodes and 17 movies, and showing reviews of them!
I'll also post predictions and other neat things :). And I should note that I will be watching FUNimation's English dub
So without further ado...
DragonBall Episode 1: Secret Of The DragonBalls
Image

Corresponding: Chapter 1: Bloomers And The Monkey King

Thoughts:

Wow, great way to start off the series! Long chapter, though I see that others are shorter :D. It's a funny series. Goku is a complete idiot. I enjoyed this start. I liked the voices too! And the music was good. I liked the song that played as Goku and Bulma were walking to Goku's house! Like I said, great intro. :)

Predictions:
Not a whole lot to predict here! I can just see Goku and Bulma getting into shenanigans as they continue their search for the DragonBalls! :) And ALSO, I wanna find out more about the group we saw getting the One-Star DB...I'm assuming they're villans?

Thanks for reading! Check back tommorow for Episode 2! :D

Yep! And wherever the movies played alongside the series (in Japan), I'll watch that movie. Thanks! It's gonna be fun. :D

Have fun though I do recommend you watch it in Japanese (better voice acting scripts etc).

Quick! Before it's too late, switch over to the Japanese version. It seems that most dub fans still insist on watching the dub because that is what they are used to. Make the switch now before you become trapped like the rest of them!!!

I gotta give Gozar and this guy both credit for naming scheme though. 'Road to 508', '508 Episode Journey' - Mine on FUNi is just 'Gyt Kaliba's Sub Experience'. That just sounds like a rejected Bill & Ted film name...

"508-Episode Journey"

It should have a hyphen.

Also, if you're not watching it in Japanese, you're going to be in for one of hell of a surprise later. The order FUNimation dubbed the series in means some inconsistencies in performances, terms, etc. I recommend watching the original version with subtitles if only because it's a much more consistent experience for a first-time viewer starting with Dragon Ball and finishing with GT.

Oh man, all 508 episodes and all 17 movies, as well? Well, I wish you good luck!

Oh, just to let you know, there are also three TV Specials, two for Z, and one for GT. But it seems you're a bit far off from them right now.

Again, good luck, new guy! And welcome to the Dragon Ball fandom!

Ah, yes. Blaze, be prepared for paragraphs upon paragraphs detailing why the original version is immeasurably better. Apart from that, bon voyage!

It's always nice to see a new fan join the series. It's very interesting to see how you, as a new fan, take scenes for the first time. I look forward to your next episode viewing.

And ignore the version specific fanboys. If you enjoy the show in any specific language, then watch it as such. Only the fan him/herself should decide how they wish to view a given series. Heck, enjoy multiple versions if you want. Only you can decide what Dragon Ball is for yourself.

So, what made you interested in Dragon Ball in the first place? And when did you first decide to start watching the series like this?

You should make it more complete by adding the JSAT special, Dr. Slump, and Neko Majin. Then watch it all in chronological order. Bardock special -> Dragon Ball. Dragon Ball GT -> Trunks special.
...whining about the anime because it doesn't follow my "manga volumes agenda."

You say that sarcastically and almost surprisingly, when the entire site this forum is attached to is dedicated to the original Japanese version of the franchise -- the one, single version that our entire global community can rally around and enjoy collectively with similar experiences.

The person is at the very beginning of the series and has FUNimation releases -- therefore, the original Japanese version is right there, easily available to them. Why wouldn't this community recommend it...?

Instead of being snide, why not be helpful beyond just another "Hey, dude, good luck!" comment?

I really suggest that you watch it in Japanese with English subs. They are far more accurate than the English dub, it's like you're watching a completely different show.

Yeah. Hell, for a second, I even though that this topic was made Gozar.

Actually, there are 5 TV specials in total, four for Z and one for GT. There's the "Dragon Ball Z Movie 7 TV Special" and there's also the "Dragon Ball Z Year-End TV Special".

You say it as if everyone watches prefers the Japanese Version over English. It's almost sad how closed this community is to the other dubs. Some people prefer watching something they understand instead of having to read while they watch.

No, most of us are just adverse to watching something that sucks. When something like Kai comes along that is in English but doesn't suck, then hey, that's awesome too.

That said, BlazeGogeta, I agree with a few others here and wholeheartedly recommend that you instead watch the subtitled Japanese version in your marathon here, and thus get your fandom off to a good start. By watching the dub, you're missing out on the original and real Dragon Ball, which in so many ways is a whole different beast from the (old) dub, as any one of us will be able to explain. I can guarantee you'll gain an appreciation for the series which you never thought possible.
