So the end is confirmed.
Disappointing, but nothing you can do about it.
I also think it would've done better (and not been canceled) if they'd done the whole thing from scratch. I would've bought the DVD's if it was brand new animation instead of Z episodes edited together.

Re: Toriko animated series takes Kai's timeslot in April?!
Okayyy...... I was waiting for the OST listing to show on the surface, and after it's composition revelead to me, I already knew that Kai was going down.......
Now this only confirms it...... If it was redrawn from scratch and had scenes remade to be like in manga (didn't had it's manga counterpart, but Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam - A New Translation, anyone???). In comparison to the zeta Gundam case, Kai is looking like piece of s**t, done by some highschool students on weekends.
So, Sayonara Kai!!! After screwed Saint Seiya which pretty pissed off it's mangaka, forced him to buy half of the rights and get the last two series to different studio & Kai with those sales and everything, TOEI got one more slap in the face, which they deserved for their lamery.

So Kai is cancelled, and all I can give is a resounding "meh"...
We could speculate for hours on why it got canned. "No one really liked it", "It's not doing so well", "If you strip out all the filler from the Buu saga, it'd wind up being 10 episodes long..." are among my choices for why it ended.

And it would've been even shorter if Kai was 100% redrawn since those sticky-to-the-main-plot filler can be abandon.Chuquita wrote:So the end is confirmed.

Re: Toriko animated series takes Kai's timeslot in April?!
So Kai is ending. Oh, well I am not upset but it does suck for people who were looking forward to seeing the Buu arc dubbed or just enjoyed Kai in general.
I think it would have fared better as others have said if they had re-animated the show from scratch (even though I personally do not like the newer animation styles).
This would probably explain why Funimation is dropping the MSRP on the Kai DVDs/Blu-ray sets.
It would be harder though to edit the footage I guess in the Buu arc since there is so much filler mixed into it i.e. Great Saiyaman saga etc.

At least this clears it up. So... what do you think is next for the Dragon Ball franchise? I mean, apart from video games, sound tracks etc., do you have any hope for new material? Maybe Funi can get the 2008 special? Or maybe they could dub PtETS. Do you think Dragon Ball will gain anything else animation-wise? Like new specials etc. I hope Kai isn't the last thing Dragon Ball will receive.

Episode 98 airs on March 27, the day the 3DS comes out in the States... WHY DOES EVERYTHING HAVE TO BE SO BITTERSWEET?!
Though, I hope if FUNimation is smart, they'd pay Toei to finish the series that's doing pretty well over here. Just because the sales in Japan weren't the best doesn't mean they have to screw the rest of us.

I pray that Toei will still animate Kai for an English dub treatment seeing as it's faring well over here.
Although I highly doubt it.

Re: Toriko animated series takes Kai's timeslot in April?!
I don't think it's up to FUNimation, really. Its possible that kind of thing is out of their price-range given the (seemingly) (comparatively) lackluster success of Kai in the home video department. But I do think Toei has the opportunity to continue to produce the footage and scripts to sell to all the countries around the world, not just the U.S. Seems like a no-brainer to me. Whatever the fate in Japan, may not necessarily be the fate for the rest of us. But we really don't know. I guess the safest bet is that it won't happen. Which is monumentally disappointing. I was looking forward to an complete accurate English dub. Toei really messed that up for us.
Re: Toriko animated series takes Kai's timeslot in April?!
Thanks Hujio. I forgot to make it clear that that's what I was asking, but I figured the hotel room would have one of those "What station is on what channel" kind of pamphlet, so I'de figure it out myself. But this info helps too! And yes, I will be in Tokyo!Hujio wrote:To be exact, Fuji TV is channel 8, or at least it is in Tokyo.Drabaz wrote:What channel?

Re: Toriko animated series takes Kai's timeslot in April?!
I'm kind of crushed to be honest. Kai reignited my interest in the series, initially. I liked the faster pacing, and the different spin on the music and voices from the Japanese actors.
I'll probably still finish my collection of Kai anyway (provided FUNimation finishes porting the series). It'd be nice to have both the original series (Dragon Box) and Kai on my shelves.
This is a sad day. I would have loved to see a filler-less Majin Buu (not to mention Goten, Trunks, Fusion, and Vegeta's character growth!) but I guess we're stuck with what we've got.

Slightly disappointed with this news. I liked Kai and I did enjoy the new dub immensely. But, oh well. Time to move on, I guess.

Frankly, I'd like to see FUNimation spend their money on something that'll draw more than finishing a literal DBZ abridged...
Like snagging up the distribution rights to PSG.

All the money that was apparently wasted on Kai's production could have went towards a new movie or OVA rather than rehashing older stories.

Re: Toriko animated series takes Kai's timeslot in April?!
I would have faith in Kamisama again if FUNi/international licensing could get Toei to make more, but I'm pretty sure that ain't gonna happen.
That being said, Dragon Soul was one of my favorite parts of Kai. I can't speak Japanese, but I can sing along to the Kai opening. Ha.

Re: Toriko animated series takes Kai's timeslot in April?!
I would've done the same.
Kai held itself spectacularly in ratings. Episode 80 even topped One Piece.
It's been great.
