Is there a chance we could still get the rest of Z (until the end of the Buu arc) here/other countries? Maybe they would sell it direct to DVD/Blu-Ray in Japan? I know it's doing well on Nicktoons and I'm sure I'll do just as well in other countries who didn't get a great dub to begin with. Is this thought even slightly realistic?

What do you mean by "still get it"? As in get more episodes after Cell?

In Japan, the numbers show that people like to watch it on free TV, but they don't like to spend money on it. A direct-to-video release could theoretically do better than the current DVD/Blu-ray sales, but if I were Toei, I wouldn't be willing to take the risk that it will do well enough to serve as the sole distribution method for a 40-50 episode arc. I think the most we could hope for on that end are compilation movies, and they would probably have to be released theatrically to do well (which is another risk for Toei).

Also, I may not be remembering correctly, but I think the big numbers on Nicktoons are relative to other Nicktoons shows. How well does it really rank for cable TV in general? It might be enough to make Nicktoons happy, but is it really enough to convince Toei to continue to produce episodes?

It's also doing very well on CW. I hope Funimation can pool the revenue they get from the TV airings from Nicktoons and CW and fund a "Kai" version of the Buu arc from Toei. Maybe they can get other international distributors to chip in.

IIRC, in Japan, owning anime is considered something for really rich people or fanatics of the series (especially when you can go get the original manga for so cheap.) So I doubt that would make enough money for them to consider a direct-to-DVD and Blu-ray approach.

Since it is pretty much confirmed at this point (though you never know), I would hope that FUNi uses the cash from the Nicktoons and CW airings to pay to finish up the series. They have a while to save up, as the Nicktoons is at where the Androids arrive (and from what my info on my satellite TV provider is saying, their starting over to episode 1 next week), and the CW just started the Ginyu vs. Goku fight. But I hope that they do, so we can have a good dub of the Boo arc.

I think DBZKai would have to preform really well to even consider asking CW or Nicktoons to air the Buu arc from Z, but I'm sure Toei is desperate enough to say yes.

With a continuation, it might have to depend on how well Kai is doing in America, if guys are thinking of things that happened with Voltron, Ultimate Muscle, and Big O, where more eps were done for America after ending in Japan. As a fan of both DB and OP, I find that chart fascinating.
It makes the fact that Kai's been canceled make a lot more sense, along with the fact that the future of One Piece's English dub is currently up in the air. I've been following the news on it and Funi themselves isn't sure when/if they're going to continue into the Davy Back arc, or when/if they'll get around to dubbing the rest of the movies.


I guess an international-only Buu arc of Kai wouldn't be too far-fetched, but I'm not sure if I'd buy it if it didn't have the Japanese dub on there too.

For me, I'd buy a dub only release of the Buu Saga, and be fine with it. I'm buying the Dragon Boxes, so I don't need Kai for subs. The best option would be a finished product, however.

And I find that chart interesting. Support for Dragon Ball is growing in America, and One Piece is waning...while it's the opposite in Japan. Maybe that does mean there's hope for more Kai in English.

It's bizarre how closely the sales drop in Japan for Dragon Ball over the last few years mirrors the sales increase internationally. It seems like that international money should be able to make up for the drop in sales in Japan.

I can believe that. Not only does One Piece's manga keep shattering record after record in Japan, but just this past month they had this deal where the series was on the cover of somewhere around 200 different magazines in Japan. (Not to mention that car promo).


It's the fact that OP has become such a runaway success in Japan over the past couple years that I do have doubts that Toei would even find doing anything else post-Kai with Dragon Ball worth their money. And that makes me saddened because I like both series.

You gotta skip back a couple weeks into February, but there are One Piece DVDs on the charts, just not of recent episodes, but collections of episodes from older arcs.

They did drop off the charts pretty quickly after that; the manga's probably a lot more popular.
