How did they find a cure for the heart virus?

Post by MetaMoss » Sat Mar 05, 2011 9:37 pm

As in while the Jinzōningen were terrorizing the world? I mean, sure they didn't destroy the whole world in those 20 years, but wouldn't the world's resources be concerned with destroying the Jinzōningen instead of a virus? I mean, just sayin'.

Nice question!

According to Trunks, it happened that only at that time there was a cure, so it's unlikely that Bulma developed it

Probably the same way that they make anti-viral medicine these days, a vaccine. Bulma's a genius, so naturally, her finding out how to make it wouldn't be too hard.

Well Goku supposedly dies soon after Trunk's warned him of the virus. So maybe they figured out a cure during the three years before the Jinzoningen got there.

There is no indication that Bulma was the one who found a cure. The most probable was that medicine investigators found it just like in today's days.

Excuse me, being a genius doesn't mean that you can heal the world with one hand. If it was so, we would live in a land of happiness, holding hands and dancing under the rainbows.

Scientists research never focus only on one aspect, that's first. The war state doesn't mean that everything else suddenly stopped. Plus, many of the discoveries were made by accident- it may be a side effect of searching for biological weapon.

I really doubt that all the world's resources would go towards destroying the androids. We see in the manga that they still had hospitals up and running, and in the anime special there's even that amusement park. If anything medicine would get a big boost in funding during a crisis like this, and maybe that's what led to a cure being developed.

Ah, I know! They were trying to create disease bombs to drop on the androids and kill them with some variant of the one that Goku had. But before they could do that, they needed to create a cure for the disease so that using it to kill the androids wouldn't go on to create an epidemic that would wipe everyone else out. That plan didn't pan out for one reason or another, but they did manage to develop the cure.

Quite simple, a wizard did it.

Interesting idea. Though if it was a biological weapon, maybe the Jinzōningen were designed to resist such weapons (I'm sure Dr. Gero wouldn't want them to die that easy).

The world being ravaged by killer androids doesn't render the Hippocratic Oath null and void. If there are any doctors left, they'll continue to do what they can. You've gotta hold on to hope and all that.

This. Its probable that cientists were close to finding a cure when Goku died from it and completed the cure shortly after when the world was still in good shape (even if the androids had already started to destroy cities).

But the main reason is plot necessity.

I think that a cure for a rare heart virus is kind of secondary in the world of Future Trunks. There's a lot more useful stuff for doctors to do than that. That's why to me it would make sense that the cure was discovered when the world was still in good shape.

Hippocratic Oath is already null and void. Half of it de-actualised in last century because of medicine progress. Those what could be left was a bit controversial- to put simply it justified not paying attention to the patient's opinion about treatment. The modern oaths have not much in common with that.

You know, that's not the first time when I see the opinion that on the war life stops and stood still. Haven't you read any biographies, articles or at least "Gone with the Wind". That's human nature that even in the worst disaster we try to maintain some level of normality that prevents us from going crazy. Science goes on too, and medicine in one that has taken from war - the whole surgery was born on the battlefield, many drugs used now come from army's laboratories.

The world of Future Trunks is not a world at war. Its an apocalyptic scenario. Worldwide.

A good term of comparison would be the future world of the Terminator movies, which, by the way, was what inspired Toriyama regarding the world of Future Trunks.

The people (and doctors), the ones that are left, are focused in surviving and in "basic" care, which is the most immediate need.

Doctors trying to research the cure for a rare heart virus in the world of Future Trunks makes as much sense to me as doctors trying to find a cure for cancer in the world of the future of the Terminator movies, instead of focusing in basic care of the people that are left and their survival. Unless it was discovered by mistake, of course.

Btw, in the real world and in real life, the world was never destroyed in war (or by other cause), only (small) parts of it were destroyed... The rest of the world (and people) continued with their normal lives, even though almost everyone and almost every country were focused on the war efort in the two world wars. Hardly the same situation as a worlwide apocalyptic scenario where almost everything is destroyed and almost everyone is dead.

Almost? As it was mentioned some things still function- better or worse. There are still lots of possibilities to discover almost everything.

"Bulma's a genius" doesn't say anything. She's a mechanical genius - a real tech wiz, - but I seriously, seriously doubt she has professional knowledge about viral biology. As for a cure for the heart virus, it's amazing they even found a cure, considering most things in the medical world have no cure, just treatments. But, this is Dragon Ball. I think the heart virus was around from before.

I don't think that's ever been said.

Maybe not officially, but there quite a bunch of similarities.

Time travel stories tend to be similar. Are there really that many direct similarities, though?
