Read up on the disaster of Chernobyl. Reports are stating that if the problem is not solved in due time, the situation will escalate into something far worse than that of Chernobyl.

Not entirely, but the outer shell has been blast off, leaving only the 'skelleton' of the structure and meltdown has most likely taken place.

It's the Fukushima I reactor, FYI.

Pictures broadcast on Japanese television appeared to show the outer structure of one of the buildings had collapsed, releasing a large cloud of dust and vapor. The Kyodo News and Jiji Press services reported that the plant may have experienced a nuclear meltdown just before the explosion. The blast was described as "huge" and "massive". A BBC journalist reported being stopped 60 kilometers from the blast site by police.
At 03:07 JST (12:37 GMT) Reuters reported that TEPCO planned to cool the leaking reactor with sea water, using Boric acid to prevent a criticality accident. However, at 23:00 JST (14:00 GMT) TEPCO announced that due to the quake at 22:15 the filling of the reactor with sea water and boric acid had been stopped.

Really? I was watching the news all day yesterday and everyone constantly stated that it would be disastrous, but not quite the disaster that Chernobyl was. Can't recall the reasoning for those statements however. Really hope they get them under control ASAP though, because even if they were right about it not being quite like Chernobyl, that's still definitely not a good thing.

Chernobyl was a fundamentally different type (read: older and less reliable) of reactor than Fukushima. Most sources I heard say that because of this, a disaster the scale of Chernobyl is not likely.

They're still quite desperate though. They were trying to submerge the reactor with sea water and boric acid (since stopped due to aftershocks). This is truly desperate, because doing this eleminates every possibility of ever fully repairing the reactor.

Reassuring news from the UN - the risk from Japan's radiation leak appears to be "probably quite low". The World Health Organisation's Gregory Hartl said:

"At this moment it appears to be the case that the public health risk is probably quite low. We understand radiation that has escaped from the plant is very small in amount."

Any radioactive pollution from the explosion at the Fukushima nuclear power plant will likely be blown out over the Pacific Ocean, thanks to favourable winds, says the French Nuclear Saety Authority.

Hopefully these speculations will prove correct.

I do find it funny that people think that this earthquake is link up the end of the world in 2012 . I mean it's not like Earthquakes like this happen before. In 1908, a similar Earthquake happen as well and killed over 7 million people in Messina. So far the 1960 Valdivia earthquake is the largest earthquake in history with a magnitude of 9.5.

Wow, I just read all of those FB comments. "kuso no baka", as the Japanese would say, I believe. I can't believe how stupid people can be, going off spouting that kind of nonsense. And the bigotry. I didn't see this kind of hate when Haiti had their quake.
