Okay, I'll grant you that the island may or may not have been abandoned. It's not really clear. But it's pretty ridiculous to assume everyone could flee the city in that short a time.

But still.

Kuririn: "Damn! We should have sealed him up!"

Goku (something to this extent): "If we had killed him, God would've died too. Plus, I have to keep an archenemy around."

They make it so, so clear that Goku's main motivation is keeping a rival.

Even in the manga, Chaozu says that he was taken out of the hospital when everyone fled after Ma Junior revealed he was really Piccolo. It's hard to imagine that they could have completely evacuated the entire island between then and Piccolo's big attack, but the idea that people were fleeing to safety isn't only in the anime.
There is still the fact that Goku believed that he "wasn't that bad". There is a significant difference between Piccolo and his father and I think this is one of those instances where Goku saw something others didn't.
During his actual fight with Piccolo at the tournament, Goku refers to him as being extremely evil, and Piccolo doesn't really do anything during their fight to prove him wrong. I have to wonder if maybe his idea that the new Piccolo wasn't as bad as the old only came later, perhaps because Piccolo apparently didn't cause much trouble during the 5 years between the tournament and Raditz's arrival.

They manage in the anime :(

I see it as the other way around since that's not the first reason he gives . And he only says that to Piccolo after he healed him. And I repeat what I mentioned, if Goku believed that Piccolo wasn't that evil, then he probably thought he didn't deserve to die.

That maybe so but I also thought it was Piccolo's attitude during the entire 23 tournament. He played nice, he even mentioned that he was having fun with this "game". He was only focused on Goku and wasn't really interested in anything else. I don't see Daimao doing this, he reveled in causing pain and destruction and wouldn't have had the patience to do something like hide his identity and fool around for a while.

You can't evacuate an entire city in a few minutes. Even if you could, it's an island and there's nowhere never enough shipping capacity to move the entire population off in that amount of time.

The idea that Piccolo didn't kill anybody is as stupid as "Too bad it's Sunday, those buildings would've been full of people".

Again with the DB and reality comparisson... The anime did this just fine. But yea it's ridiculous
Toriyama obviously doesn't shy away from mass murdering innocent lives I think he would have been more clear about people dying because of that blast in order to enhance Piccolo's evilness.

Don't get me wrong; Gokû's main motive for keeping Piccolo alive was probably so he could fight him again, but I think there is a difference because Gokû says that if he let him die, God would die too (although, granted, his main reason for keeping him was because he didn't want to lose his archenemy, and they could've just sealed him up with the Mafûba). Again, I'm not condoning Gokû's decision, but I'm saying I can understand that a bit more than his decision to keep Vegeta alive, who was way more evil and a much bigger threat than Piccolo.

I agree with this, although maybe part of it came from the fact that Ma Junior hadn't done as much evil stuff to Gokû as Piccolo Daimaô did. Daimaô had killed his best friend and mentor, and tried to take over the world. Ma Junior just beat up Gokû, and then trained for five years without causing much trouble.

Well, given that that's the anime, they probably had a few hours to evacuate.

A mushroom cloud rising over a city kinda speaks for itself.

I recently finished the first anime series with my girlfriend, a first time viewer. Every time Piccolo used a big attack, she'd point out that Piccolo is, in fact, America.

Yeah, not in DB. There is no "5 minutes until namek explodes here"

A mushroom cloud rising over a city kinda speaks for itself.
True, then again so does a crowd of people running away in terror and an a well placed line from Chaozu about people evacuating.

Also, important to note, Piccolo's intention was not to destroy the city or kill people, he didn't care about them. It was just Goku he was after.

By that logic they should have killed Tenshinhan too, since during his fight with Roshi he fired a blast that would have killed several innocent people had Roshi not stiopped it.

I just realized this move that Goku does to Tien...

Looks a lot like WWE Superstar Chris Jericho's "Walls of Jericho" finishing move.

You, of course, informed her that mushroom clouds are caused by any explosion that generates the necessary air currents, not by the fission or fusion of atoms.

Yep, that's Mr. Stay Puft. That arc (particularly in the anime) is full of crazy background characters.

In that one panel that depicts the Earthlings training at God's Palace, upon closer look, Yajirobe's actually meditating, rather than eating.

Tao Pai Pai's Dodonpa creates a hole in Son Goku's gi EXACTLY where the Kanji was. Nice way to get around having to draw the Kame Kanji for a while, Toriyama. :P

Tenshinhan has at least two, possibly three outfits in the Boo Arc.

Newfound respect for Yajirobe.
