They scanned the films in HD, removed film grain, scratches, and dust, then corrected the colour tone. All of those were done by Imagica.

Re: DBKai Remastering
I thought the digital remastering was done by Q-TEC, as they are listed in the ending credits of Kai. Do you have any source saying that Imagica actually did the remastering?
Anyway, the remastering process for Kai was covered in the first few Blu-ray box set Dragon Books. I've been meaning to write up an article detailing the process, but haven't gotten around to it yet. And being that I'm not at home at the moment, I can't look it up for you. Hopefully I can get around to it sometime soon.

Re: DBKai Remastering
So I've been slowly working on a detailed look at the remastering process, and in general how a single episode is made. For now, here's a little excerpt covering the basics:
I hope that answers the original question, but if you want something a little more detailed, you'll have to wait a bit longer. As with most productions, the series truly starts with the finalization of the storyline or plot. From there, the specific scenes from DragonBall Z required to create this plot are found and a lower resolution "rough cut" of the episode is created. These scenes are then scanned and converted from their original 16mm film masters into high-definition digital masters, which are then color corrected in accordance with the set color palette. These HD masters are then checked for any damage or excessive grain, which are removed, and any scenes requiring re-animation are selected. While the HD digital masters are being edited and cleaned, the production process moves on with the music selection and voice recording, which are both based around the "rough cut". Once all of the video editing is complete, the audio tracks are all combined and added to the completed video, resulting in the final product as seen on TV or released on home video.

Wow, so not even the full episodes are being scanned and remastered into high-definition? Hmm...

Re: DBKai Remastering
Yeah, they pretty much make it sound like they're only remastering the footage they needed into HD. So for instance, if they ever were to release Z fully in HD, they'd most likely have to rescan everything. Yay...?
