Is the Earth actually just a bit over 800 years old?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Is the Earth actually just a bit over 800 years old?

Post by CatouttaHell » Tue May 17, 2011 1:19 am

I was just thinking earlier about where the hell Karin-sama came from. His tower's connections to Kami-sama's Lookout seem like something that had to have been there all along. Yet he's only 800 years old and since he's an immortal cat, there's no proof that Karin-samas just come and go like Kami-samas do. I think it might be possible that Karin-sama and his tower came into existence at the same time Kami-sama's Lookout and the Earth itself did.

Umigame and Mr. Popo are arguably older than Karin-sama but IIRC it was stated somewhere that Mr. Popo came from Otherworld, and I'm pretty sure there's no evidence for Umigame being older than Karin-sama besides in Anime filler.

Also of note is how time is rated in Dragon Ball. Goku meeting Buruma in the year 749, etc.

What are your thoughts on this?

Earth has had other gods before Kami, so it's not too hard to imagine that someone had Karin's job before him, too.

Boo came to Earth 5 million years ago according to Daizenshuu 7. Also, in the anime Planet Makyo last approached Earth 5,000 years ago.

The same thing states that Karin came from Otherworld, too. Since planetary gods and even Kaio and Kaioshin all eventually die of old age, I think it's likely that Karin also replaced someone else who was there before him.

I don't feel like every planet has to have a god. Kami just decided to watch over the Earth, thus became its god.

Here's a question, then. Where does the "Age" system of years come from in Dragon Ball? I'm assuming it was something made up by the inhabitants of Earth, like our "AD/BC" year designations were, but what happened in Year 0 to make it signifigant? Or do we even know?

Maybe in the year 0, Olibu died in an epic battle to save the planet.

I know, filler..

It's never said. Maybe DB Online will come up with something, what with its heavy emphasis on time travel.

Nah, he says he took the job over from a previous god. And according to Goku, Popo's been around since before the current god, the previous god, or the one before that.

True, but Kami had a predecessor who was god on earth prior to him.

The question I have about the timeline of the Earth in Dragonball - it's nothing like our IRL earth lol.

How is technology so advanced? Stuff like dragon radar and hoi poi capsules, as well as flying cars, and those healing machines don't even exist yet today, in the age of computers. And it's 2011 right now, vs. year 749+. Also, all that technology and the existence of dinosaurs? Only in Dragonball. It amazes me.

That's kind of irrelevant, since it's a completely different calendar system. I mean, here in the real world it's the year 2011 in the Gregorian calendar, but the year 5771 in the Hebrew calendar, and 1432 in the Islamic calendar. That doesn't mean people in Israel are zipping around in rocket cars while those in Saudi Arabia have to rely on horses and wind-powered sailing ships to get from place to place.

Exactly. I mean, you could start your own calendar right now if you really wanted to and call this "year 0". Usually the zero year just marks a significant event that warranted the start of a new calendar.

As for the dinosaurs, if they hadn't been wiped out by bad luck in real life, who knows what the world would be like. We still have some of their descendants here on Earth even today.

Whoops. I don't know how I forgot about Majin Boo. My fault, I thought I was on to something but it looks like it was just a crackpot theory.

Also, Dragon Ball's a pretty wacky world in general, but that's pretty obvious.

On-topic, I guess, judging by Herms' earlier comment, the Earth must be at least 5 million years old.
