Why does every one hate the Garlic Jr saga?
Why does every one dislike the Garlic Jr arc? It had plenty of action and plenty of comedy. IMO it also had a pretty good plot, like Movie 1 Garlic had a pretty good stronghold and had me guessing almost to the end. It also had decent animation and has some of the best dub lines "peak a boo come to Big Daddy Garlic!" And I always liked the whole Krillin and Marron thing. Also it was one of the few filler segments where the characters were not out of character. And then we get this close to the end.

Re: Why does every one hate the Garlic Jr saga?
It was a great mix of action and comedy in this arc, the only problem is a lot of people have their reasons for hating it. That being it's a filler.
The whole idea of it wasn't too bad, but it was good to see an Arc Villain get killed by the group of Krillin, Gohan and Piccolo.

I liked the overall plot, Krillin and Co. killing a villain without Goku, and that God and Mr.Popo got to do something, and I really loved the speech God gave to the previous gods about how he may be an inferior god to them ,but he still loves the earth and all being on it even though he wasnt born on it.But I think it was poorly executed ,there a lot of things that could have been done better.

I haven't seen it in ages, but I do have some fond memories of it. On the other hand, I also have memories of some of the episodes being dragged out so, so long ... when Kami and Popo are flying through this red netherworld kinda place thing ... yeah. It has been that long. xD

Since I've already purged it from my memory, I guess I could just point folks back to Episode #0129 of our podcast where we reviewed this filler mini-arc.
Spoiler: we didn't like it.

This... is not really a reason to enjoy it. Perhaps ironically?ringworm128 wrote:and has some of the best dub lines "peak a boo come to Big Daddy Garlic!"[/img]

I always liked the Garlic Jr stuff, the only thing I didn't like about it was Maron. She's annoying but funny.
Re: Why does every one hate the Garlic Jr saga?
From what I have seen of it, I can't say I hate it and I don't think I will once I eventually see the entire arc. Currently I kinda like it, since I'm so familiar with the rest of DB it's nice to explore something new. It's basically the same attitude I have towards GT because I haven't seen it yet, even though my username is basically just about bashing GT.

Re: Why does every one hate the Garlic Jr saga?
The last time I saw the Garlic Jr. arc was in 2008 I think. I just remember not liking it because I felt the whole entire arc dragged out. The whole fight with Garlic Jr. lasted to long and I hated the part where Mr. Popo and Kami were running in some place under the Temple (I can't remember where it was exactly its been so long). That part is where I really began to feel the whole entire thing was being dragged out beyond belief.
Re: Why does every one hate the Garlic Jr saga?
The story is dragged out, lame and stupid.
Re: Why does every one hate the Garlic Jr saga?
I liked it for the storyline with Marron and the overall interaction between Gohan & Krillin. It's fun and funny.
The whole fight with Garlic Jr. went on too long though.

Heh, I think I watched it twice on my Dragon Box. I'm actually looking forward to seeing it again once I finish Namek. Anyhow, I suppose the over all lack of necessity contributes to the general dislike, but I actually like the arc pretty well. It's one of the darkest, using a number the much more heavy pieces from Kikuchi's line-up and filled with great animation. The plot isn't too bad, either. I think the fight could've been an episode shorter, but over all it was pretty cool. Had they thought to they could have made more use of Yamcha for the battles, tossing in his Sôki-dan and Rôga-FûFû-ken for interesting choreography, but I figure it was simply easier to keep track of as few protagonists as possible.

Re: Why does every one hate the Garlic Jr saga?
The arc is full of plot holes and the animation isn't phenomenal at times. I think that those are two of the main reasons people hate the arc. I don't dislike it as much as some fans do, but I think that it was a bad idea.

Re: Why does every one hate the Garlic Jr saga?
I disliked it because of some confusion. When I first saw the Garlic Jr. Arc, I haven't seen the first movie, nor the third, so Garlic Jr. "returning" and Haiya Dragon really confused me, making me dislike the filler arc.
So mondo lame.

Re: Why does every one hate the Garlic Jr saga?
The English dub is easily at its worst in the Garlic Jr and since most Americans were introduced to Dragon Ball via the English dub that may be one reason it's hated so much. The presence of Marron and the lack of Goku's presence also brings it down IMO. Other than that I don't mind it all. Garlic Jr. is actually a pretty cool guy, and his Japanese voice is awesome.

The Garlic Jr. Saga is what the Buu Saga would have been without Goku

Re: Why does every one hate the Garlic Jr saga?
Now this may sound a bit hypocritical when I say this, but I loved Dead Zone, but I hated Garlic Jr. saga. Dead Zone was so fast paced, and fun to watch. It had many of great scenes, comedy and action wise. It was overall the best DBZ movie in the first 3 of the trilogy.
But I finally watched the Garlic Jr. saga, not long ago, and it just dragged on so long, it wasn't even funny. They made one battle just boring. I'm sure some of you are going to say "Well what about the Vegeta, Freeza, and Cell battles" right? Well those just felt like it was more action to me than anything. The Garlic Jr. fight during the saga, just kept cutting to stuff I didn't want to see you know what I mean? Same with the Buu fight. It was downright boring too. I don't know, I just didn't see the point in adding a movie character into the main series, let alone a movie character, in which there movie makes no canonical sense. (Is canonical even a word? LOL)
Overall I hated the saga. :3

Re: Why does every one hate the Garlic Jr saga?
It could have been great if it were about three or four episodes shorter.
As it stands, it's okay. It's just a shame the middle drags so badly when the beginning and end are so hilarious.

Re: Why does every one hate the Garlic Jr saga?
I hated the Garlic Jr. Arc because I didn't understand how Garlic sudden broke free from the Dead Zone and now had strength comparable to Freeza's 2nd or 3rd form and had a new group of Spice Boys apparently out of no where that are stronger than the Ginyu Force. I hated how Piccolo & Krillin mercilessly pummel Gohan, their friend, just to fool Garlic so they could free Kami, when they each had plenty of opportunities to free them while they were savagely beating Gohan. I also hated how the past Kamis brought the present one to the brink of death for... pretty much no reason other than they're dicks.
I did like the gang stopping a villain without Goku though. That's its one redeeming factor. Could have used Yamcha & Tien though. Just saiyan.

Honestly I couldn't tell you why I don't like it. For some reason, every time I try to watch it I fall asleep.

Re: Why does every one hate the Garlic Jr saga?
Because Garlic Junior and his henchmen's home planet Makyo happened to approach the Earth for the first time in 5,000 years, making their power "many tens of times" greater (apparently it's like reverse kryptonite). This gave Garlic Junior the power to break free from the Dead Zone, and was why he and his henchmen were able to give post-Namek Gohan and co. a tough time. It's kind of a crazy reason, but it's all explicitly stated in the series.Travis Touchdown wrote:I hated the Garlic Jr. Arc because I didn't understand how Garlic sudden broke free from the Dead Zone and now had strength comparable to Freeza's 2nd or 3rd form and had a new group of Spice Boys apparently out of no where that are stronger than the Ginyu Force.
That's how I feel too, and I don't see why it would be hypocritical. It's not like the movie and the filler arc are at all the same aside from sharing a villain (who gets beat in pretty much the same way both times). DBZ movie 1 is probably my favorite of all the movies, and one of the reasons I don't like the filler arc is because it doesn't live up to the movie, and gives Garlic Junior a bad name when in the movie he's a pretty good villain (by movie standards anyway).Vegeta1056 wrote:Now this may sound a bit hypocritical when I say this, but I loved Dead Zone, but I hated Garlic Jr. saga.
