Because Goku is supposed to be tan. GT was the only series that got Goku's skin tone right in comparison to the manga.

Since I love tampering with images, and since it's been touched upon within this same topic, I figured I'd present this:

Also, if they had stuck with said incorrect colors throughout the series. Would these colors have bothered people who didn't like the original Toei colors for Vegeta?

In case you want specifics for what I'd done, I made the green more vibrant, as opposed to the slightly worn green of the original, and I added some yellow pigment to the orange armor, made his hair brown, as it's seen through most of the anime, and I gave him white gloves (and boots).

If this should be split off into another topic, then I apologize. I felt it was a bit on-topic on this thread.

Eh, it's more or less on topic.
I wouldn't mind his armour, but I don't like the white gloves with orange and green armour.
I don't know why but the brown hair really does make him look more badass. It's not so, boring...

I thikng if they kept the old armour colours, he wouldn't look so "menacing" compared to Nappa. It does make him stand out more, which I think is the reason they made him look different. He was elite.

Lets say he kept the orange armour with orange gloves but brown hair, I think it wouldn't look that bad. Actually I wouldn't mind it.

The way I always thought of Vegeta's hair color is that it's like my cat. When you look at him the only color anyone would think to call him is black. But when he is sunbathing (something he does a lot) the lighting allows you to clearly see a more chocolate brown color. That has never kept me from thinking of him as a black cat.

Now as for the purple...

What confuses me is, didn't Vegeta in the Trunks and Android saga say that all Saiyans have black hair? After that, there shouldn't have been any confusion as to what color all the pure Saiyans hair should be, right? Or was that only said in the American dub?

It was said in the manga, but DBZ the anime obviously is more liberal to 'black' in, Saiyans have dark hair, looks black but is actually dark shades of brown, blue, green etc.

Well, in the beginning of the series, Goku is tan, but he appears to alternate between normal (as in, just a light skin tone) and tan throughout the series, which could be because of Toriyama's forgetfulness.
