Some geography questions

Post by caejones » Fri Jun 24, 2011 3:02 pm

I'm wondering where certain places are in the dragonworld in relation to each other.

Specifically, Satan City, West City and Mt Paozu.

Also, did we ever have any ideas of where Tenshinhan and Chaozu hang out, or do they move around so much that any random mountain region will do?

In Herms' Geographical Dictionary thread we find out where those places are to be found on DB Earth.
DB Earth:

Source: Dragonball Daizenshuu 4: World Guide.

Satan City & Mt Paozu are in Area B-4. West City is in Area B-2.

So it would seem the guys who made the world maps in DBZ 3/Budokai 3 & DBZ Sparking Neo/Budokai Tenkaichi 2 were able to make an accurate map for DB Earth in their story modes.

Not only can I not see the map, but I'm not sure I understand the way it's divided into sections. Are the letters north-south and the numbers west-to-east? How big is a section? Mt. Paozu is apparently several hours from Satan City by car. Is one section about the size of a whole country? Can we assume that this means west City is about three thousand kilometers from Satan City?

The area where Gohan trained in the wilderness and the battle with Nappa took place is in B2 right with West City. How far apart are they, though?

This page might be a little better. It's got close-ups (sort of) of each invididual section, and each location is numbered with a corresponding label and explantion below.

Yes.
How big is a section?
It's not specified, but the entire Earth is divided up into only 12, and cities are shown as taken up only very small portions of them, but even those pictures of cities might be larger than scale.
Mt. Paozu is apparently several hours from Satan City by car.
According to Erasa in the series, Satan City is 1,000 km from Gohan's house and this takes a "jet flyer" (apparently meaning the sci-fi planes seen in DB) 5 hours to travel.

Is one section about the size of a whole country?
In the series DB Earth is supposed to be divided up into 43 regions (as opposed to the 12 here that were created soley to divide up the map). Daizenshuu 7 says that these 43 regions were originally seperate countries that banded together to form DB Earth's unified global government. So the 12 areas on the map here must presumably be much larger than those individual countries were.
Can we assume that this means west City is about three thousand kilometers from Satan City?
Some quick measurements show that on the map the Son family's house is roughly 3 mm from Satan City, while West City is around 12 mm from Satan city. So if the Son house is 1,000 km from Satan City, that would make West City about 4,000 km from Satan City, I guess. Though I doubt they made the map with that level of precision in mind.
The area where Gohan trained in the wilderness and the battle with Nappa took place is in B2 right with West City. How far apart are they, though?
Sticking with the rough and dirty assumption that 3 mm on the map equates to 1,000 km, then Gohan's training ground looks like about 2,000 km from West City.

In case anyone's wondering, filler shows Gohan's training ground as an island, but Daizenshuu 4 is based only on the manga, which is why it shows the place as part of the mainland.

Edit: going back to the 3 mm = 1,000 km rule, and the dubious value thereof, Tao Pai Pai says that Karin Tower is 2,300 km from Red Ribbon Headquaters, while on the map it's only about 1.5 mm. Though that's less of a contradiction than I was honestly expecting.

Thanks, Herms.

I'd missed that bit about the 43 districts originally being separate countries, before.

Otherwise, a car can travel on Highway 401 / Highway of Heroes from Detroit/Windsor to the edge of Ottawa takes like 4-5 hours to drive.  I can assure Gohan can use his Nimbus to travel from the Son home to Satan City 1000 miles.
