It's just that I can't see Toei putting two specials on one disc in Dragon box quality for so cheap...jpdbzrulz4sure wrote:Is there any reason why they wouldn't be using the DBox masters?CashmanX wrote:Why do I have the distinct feeling that these aren't the Dragon box versions?
That and it seems it's being published by Shueisha...

What other masters would they use? It would cost more money to make a new set of masters and encodes than it would to just use the only existing DVD masters in Japan.CashmanX wrote:It's just that I can't see Toei putting two specials on one disc in Dragon box quality for so cheap...

Though I'm skeptical about the quality too. But as long as I can finally own the TV specials in 4:3 with the eyecatches for a reasonable price, I'll be happy. Now we just need the GT special. (SSJ4 Gokuu Jr card!?)

I'll probably import these if I can afford them this fall.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.
Re: Dragon Box Singles: The Trunks and Bardock TV Specials!
I wouldn't worry about the image quality taking a hit. These specials take about 3.5 Gigs and 3.7 Gigs (I checked my DBox discs). One dual-layered DVD would suffice, on average each R2 Dragon Box disc took 7.6-7.7 gigs per DVD. On the other hand, the GT Special was not remastered. The GT special in the Green Season sets actually looks a lot better than the Dragon Box version (Minus the blurring). The GT Special is also interlaced.TripleRach wrote:What other masters would they use? I'm not quite sure of what's going on here with this packaging.kei17 wrote:This does look like the DVD case is included in a bigger paper package and the actual cover will look like this:
This kind of packaging is common among low price DVDs sold in Japanese convenience stores.

They made all the possible money they could make on the DBoxes at this point, which is why they're releasing singles now (and before), to rake in more money. Toei wants profit... there's no way a limited edition they've kept super limited for almost 10 years now is making them any kind of money.
If you read any of their mission statements to investors, they want to start making more money off of the back catalogue. They may even be looking into how Funi is doing things and trying models like that for profitability reasons.
These specials are also dated by this point; nearly 20 years old. I love them, but they're obviously not today's new hot shit. There comes a point where the money you can feasibly charge for something like this becomes less and less.
It's also a way to cross promote another product without spending a ton of money. These things are already animated and mastered; a cheap DVD reprint is a no brainer.

Is that in reply to me? I said I hoped they were going to do these like the Dragon Box Singles... I do not expect, nor do I have the ability to afford, some kind of crazy limited edition thing. This is better for affordability, but it doesn't really fall in line with the other 103(I think?) Dragon Box singles.

Uh, what? They made all the possible money they could make on the Dragonboxes the moment they released them, since they only produced the number of boxes that had already been paid for through preorders.Ashura wrote:They made all the possible money they could make on the DBoxes at this point

I think it's kinda like the DVDs they sell at Costco. You're probably meant to throw the outer box away.nathantheguitarist wrote:I'm not quite sure of what's going on here with this packaging. It looks like a plain DVD case that lifts up out of some crazy cardboard thing...? I really can't tell. I was hoping it (or they) would be exactly like the other Dragon Box singles... I guess not.

Guys, amazon.co.jp has pictures of the back of the box. Don't know myself if those are DBox quality shots but you can check to see if they are or not.

It's always questionable if what's on the box actually matches the contents.ShadowDude112 wrote:Guys, amazon.co.jp has pictures of the back of the box. Don't know myself if those are DBox quality shots but you can check to see if they are or not.
That being said, the pictures on the back don't have the "Green Skies" that are so prominent in the DBox masters (from what I've seen so far). Anyone got equivalent JP DBox shots of the specific frames shown on the back of the boxart?

Cashman X was like 'It's just that I can't see Toei putting two specials on one disc in Dragon box quality for so cheap...' which ignores the huge fact that they spent a lot of money to restore all these episodes on DVD and have done nothing but the Dbox singles (as well as Funi's set and whoever else licensed the footage; it's one other country, I think?) to exploit this fact since then. It's illogical that this wouldn't use those masters.
