Dragon Ball making references to other franchises?
Dragon Ball making references to other franchises?
This has probably been done before. But I'm trying to assemble a list of homages that DB made to other shows.
* Journey to the West
* Superman (Alien sent to Earth, Suppaman)
* Jackie Chan (Jackie Chun)
* Frankenstein's Monster (Android #8)
* Arale (Dr. Slump)
* Dracula (Baba's Tournament)
* The Invisible Man (Baba's Tournament)
* The Mummy (Baba's Tournament)
* Michael Jackson (King Kai's Bubbles)
* Super Sentai (Ginyu Force, Great Saiyaman)
* Alien (Third Form Freeza)
* The Terminator (Trunks, Major Metallitron)
* Cinderella (Babidi, Bibidi, Buu)
* The Sword in the Stone (Z-Sword)
* Mothra (Hirudegarn crashing into the TV tower)
Anything else that I a missing?

Suppaman from Dr. Slump should also be included, since he makes an appearance in DB and changes clothes in a phone booth.Kid Buu wrote: * Superman (Alien sent to Earth)
* Bibidi, Babidi, Buu(Fairy Godmother's song from Cinderella).Kid Buu wrote:Anything else that I a missing?
* The Sword in the stone(The Z sword, Gohan even makes a reference to it).
Probably more though, as I have this feeling I've forgotten a major one..

Added, also included that Saiyaman Gohan was another Sentai reference.

*Gamera-The turtle from the Gamera series- (Muten Roshi's pet)
*Baragon (The monster who fought Frankenstein in " Frankenstein Conquers the World" and later joined Godzilla's family) (A cameo in Capsule Co.s garden)
I don't know if this is true or not, but some say that Taopaipai is based on the Korean actor Hwang Jang Lee who played Thunderleg in Jackie Chan's Drunken Master.

A KFC Colonel Sanders appears once.

I saw this on Reddit a while ago.

Huh, looks like a Buu arc episode, where he turns the people into candy.

I believe kid Chichi's helmet is a homage to Ultraseven.

Re: Dragon Ball making references to other franchises?
The entire turtle storyline that leads into Kame Sennin's first appearance is referencing the legend of Urashima Taro.
Also, there's that fish saying "Shuwatch" at the end of chapter 6 (hey, I just checked, and it has Ultraman eyes, too. Never noticed before. And with that, I believe we have a new avatar).

Re: Dragon Ball making references to other franchises?
The definition of "franchise" here seems a little abstract (shows, legends, myths, novels, whole genres).
In the title page for chapter 407 (DBZ 213), the Cell Junior on the upper right is doing the same pose as a Dragon Quest goblin.
Yakon is named after the magical phrase "Teku-Maku-Mayakon" from the shojo manga and anime Himitsu no Akko-chan.

Re: Dragon Ball making references to other franchises?
If we're counting background cameos, Ghostbusters was referenced in the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai (Mr. Staypuft in a crowd). I believe that the Creature from the old horror films showed up in Z movie 12 (or 13).
Re: Dragon Ball making references to other franchises?
I always thought Saiyaman was more of a Kamen Rider reference, with various American Super Hero elements.Kid Buu wrote:Added, also included that Saiyaman Gohan was another Sentai reference.

Videl dressing up as "Great Saiyaman No.2" might be a reference to Yatterman, where Yatterman's girlfriend is "Yatterman No.2".

Re: Dragon Ball making references to other franchises?
Dragon Ball parodies the Golden Harvest logo during the openings for the Tenkaichi Budokai episodes.
During the preliminaries for the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai, Yamucha says,"Boards don't hit back". A reference to Bruce Lee's movie Enter the Dragon.
Muscle Tower itself is a reference to a level of the game Spartan X/Kung Fu master which was based off of Bruce Lee's Game of Death.

There was a theory that the Evil Dragon arc of GT was based on a Chinese legend, and it was posted on DaizEX, but I can't find it.

Re: Dragon Ball making references to other franchises?
Hirudegarn crashing into the TV tower before undergoing metamorphosis is an homage to the first Mothra movie (1961).
The 21st Tenkaichi Budokai is also filled with Japanese pop culture cameos in the anime. Bruce Lee is someone's opponent in the preliminaries as well.
To be honest, Dragon Ball is rife with little parodies and homages, I'm sure several of which are nearly impossible to spot unless you're a Japanese pop culture junkie. Good luck trying to catalogue them all.

Toriyama also said that Buu's clothes are based off of some Arabian story.

Re: Dragon Ball making references to other franchises?
I think that might also be Jack Pumpkinhead on the left there, one of the major characters from the Oz books, but not featured in the movie (since he didn't debut until after the first book).kaialone wrote:I know about a cameo of Dorothy, the scarecrow, the tin man and the cowardly Lion from the Wizard of Oz
I've always wondered if Toriyama was inspired by Oz's division along the cardinal directions to do the same with DB's Earth (West City and the others) and universe (the 4 galaxies).
The theory was pretty absurd, as there was nothing but the vaguest of possible similarities between the two stories.B wrote:There was a theory that the Evil Dragon arc of GT was based on a Chinese legend, and it was posted on DaizEX, but I can't find it.
