Your guess is correct. Shipping--as in relationship--is a fandom thing where people support and/or write/draw about a relationship between two characters. Sometimes these are canon relationships, sometimes they're only hinted it, and other times they're just downright crazy.Kingdom Heartless wrote:I had no idea what it meant, either... but I'm guessing character match-ups or something?

Bulma and 18 definetely weren't created with a relationship purpose in mind, but I doubt that Chichi wasn't. The marriage idea was brought up the first time she got introduced and it was pretty much the only reason she appeared in again in the story. Videl , though not as strong as her, at least got treated a little better as a character.
I'm kinda happy that pairing weren't a big deal in DB because a lot of the time they to bother me in stories.
I was fond of YamchaxBulma but I did grow to kinda accept VegetaxBulma (and yet sometimes I dislike it ). I'm kinda sad about Yamch though. It doesn't seem like he settled down with anyone in the end. There was talk about a girlfriend in the Cell Saga but we never see him with anyone... Even Tenshinhan was said to have gotten together with Lunch.
Re: Favorite shippings thread.
Actually Toriyama has addressed Yamcha's status and the Tenshinhan thing is only mentioned in that same Q&A:Michsi wrote: I'm kinda sad about Yamch though. Wow, thanks that was an interesting read. I muste have missed this.
Still...
What does that mean? It's so...vague....Q5. Was Yamcha able to become happy?
A. I've al~ways had that feeling (laughs)

Herms explained that in the very same post:Michsi wrote:What does that mean? It's so...vague....Q5. Was Yamcha able to become happy?

In the question over whether Yamcha was able to "become happy", the phrase in question (shiawase ni naru) seems to often be used when discussing marriage (or lack thereof). The picture that goes with it is Yamcha, directly after the Cell Games, talking about how his girlfriend wants an expensive necklace. So I guess you can draw your own conclusions.
Re: Favorite shippings thread.
I was actually referring to Toriyama's answer. I know he almsot never gives clear answers or they are always accompanied by something like " I think that..." and this is pretty similar. But I suppose this will have to do. He probably married someone somewhere in that case.dbgtFO wrote:Herms explained that in the very same post:Michsi wrote:What does that mean? It's so...vague....Q5. But I can't help but think of the Buu Saga, where we see Bulma more with Yamcha than with Vegeta. He comforted her both when she was distressed over Vegeta's actions at the tournament and when she found out that he died. I know I'm reading too much into it, but part of me will propbably always believe that Yamcha has some feelings left for Bulma

Favorite pair? As depicted in one of the doujinshi StarRot posted, Goku/Bubbles.

Heh, I have always been a fan too of the Trunks x Marron dynamic, partly because I wonder how tense Vegeta and Eighteen would be nevermind Kurirn and Vegeta. Actually Kuririn and Bulma would probably try to keep their respective spouses from having a rematch at a family gathering.Kaboom wrote:That is a very good point and I am definitely going to have to factor that in!Scarz wrote:I know one thing for sure, Android 18 would encourage her daughter to marry him because he was rich.

I've actually been partial to Uub/Pan for a while now. There's just something I like about the idea of Goku's student and his granddaughter hooking up.
Beyond that...Goku/Bulma instead of Chichi is another one I'm pretty fond of. I've noticed a lot of moments of Bulma thinking about it that I never used to, which I find kinda cute.

Re: Favorite shippings thread.
I'm not much of a "shipper" as the kids would say, but I've always thought Vegeta and Lunch would be a perfect couple. Her evil half likes "wild" men, and Vegeta is certainly more wild than Tenshinhan is. And it greatly amuses me to imagine Vegeta dealing with a woman that's half psycho and half happy-go-lucky and innocent. "Hey, Vegeta, I got arrested again. Come bust me outta jail."
It's not like Tenshinhan ever showed any interest in her (or romance in general), and it would've been a way to bring her back into the story that also doesn't screw over Yamcha.

Re: Favorite shippings thread.
Some interesting theories. I know that pokemon shippings have names like http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Shipping. Is that established in the DBZ mythos or do we have to start naming them?
Re: Favorite shippings thread.
DBZ isn't too strong in the shipping department. The fandoms in which the shipping phenomenon strives are usually from stories with "will they/won't they" or "love triangle" elements, like Inuyasha, Bleach and Naruto. It's usually these things that make shipping interesting and DB has none of that. They either are or are not together and since the author never really bothered much with developing romantic relationships there really wasn't much for the fans to grab onto.
I like the idea that Tenshinhan got together with Lunch in the end, though I really hated how they treated her in those filler scenes in the beginning of the saiyan arc

I dont think that DB pairing have names like that. I´m not sure but I think the term "shipping" originated in the Pokemon fandom, but dont take my word for it.SuperAndroid11 wrote:Some interesting theories. What shipping are named varies from fandom to fandom. In DB fandom shipping are usually just named CharacterXCharacter, while in Avatar fandom or example shipping names are usually mixes of the names of the shipped characters like Katara and Aang are called "Kataang", or in Pokemon shipping as you can see with the link above most shipping get a title like Ash and Dawn are called "Pearlshipping"

Re: Favorite shippings thread.
We can't really use combinations of character names for shippings in DB. I mean, then all the Vegetaxgoku people will be talking about Gogeta... or... Veku... or... Vegerot...?
And Gotenxtrunks people would be talking about Gotenks...
That's a good third* of the shippers disenfranchised right there.
.
And then we have to ask ourselves how some names would fit together. Tiunch? Snoku?
XD
* I made this number up.

I dunno. I'm inclined to disagree with you, mainly because of the sheer amount of slash pairings.Michsi wrote:DBZ isn't too strong in the shipping department.
Anyway, on topic: VegetaxRaditz and BulmaxLunch.
Yep.
Re: Favorite shippings thread.
Wait so is this a favorite shipping or a favorite crackshipping thread? or is it a "shippings that make the hottest porn" thread?

Re: Favorite shippings thread.
Compared to almost all the other long running series which have purposefully developed romantic based elements that have led to shipping growth, I'd say DB is heavily lacking. Even with slash pairings or crack pairings. The fact that the other series have a greater number of characters, while DB has around 10-15 from which only 6 or 7 are major characters also plays a part.StarRot wrote:I dunno. I suppose the correct way to have put it would be "isn't strong in the romantic/relationship department" which is usually the basis for shipping.
As for crack pairings, they usually based on physical appearance and what is considered to be a hotness factor.
As far as I could tell the major pairings from the DB fandom are canon - Bulma x Vegeta followed by Gohan x Videl
crack - Goku x Vegeta
and the rest have a pretty modest fan following, as I said, compared to the other pairings from other series.
