Perhaps they were planning to include the whole afterlife tournament for the same reason they had to include Gregory; because Paikuhan might be too ingrained into later "canon" material to completely do away with.

It's not like allusions to the Garlic Jr. mini-arc were ever made, so why include the Ano-Yo-Ichi Budokai, another entirely-filler, self-contained mini-arc that's easily excised? It's just a strange choice to make.
It is strange, but the very first episode of Kai was, what, half filler?

Which did not take place in an anime-exclusive story arc. The point isn't about what's filler or what's not, because obviously, every animated battle has some filler. And likewise, every episode has some filler in its transitional stages to pad it out for 22 minutes. Gohan getting lost in the woods or whatever is not comparable to the Garlic Junior or Other World Tournament arcs.

I'd say half an episode of filler is probably worse than a narrator saying, "...and then Goku fought some dudes in the afterlife."

I wouldn't when the principle is that the material was referenced at all, not how much time was spent dwelling on it.

Maybe the episode was too short, and they needed some, dare I say, filler? It's definitely better than a lot of other filler. :?

I just wanna see some clips before judging the episode itself
GT isn't bad, just sucks ass in comparison to the other 2 animes.

So has anyone ordered the last Blu-Ray set or DVD for this episode?

TanookiKuribo ordered the DVD, I think. So, we'll be getting a very thorough breakdown soon enough.

Why leave hints of the Anoyoichi Budokai?

Because this series ends with Goku being dead. That's pretty grim. I'll bet the Anoyoichi Budokai footage is in there as nothing more than a "Don't worry! Goku still had fun having wacky fights in the afterlife!" moment. If you're leaving him dead, you kind of have to include something like that, don't you? You know, for the kids.

So they completely erase Lunch for the series, but mention the Afterlife tournament? Okay...

I hope we get this episode both on the North American broadcast and on the final NA DVD release...

Crazy thing is that Lunch is in the first ED for the series! Jeez, kinda sad when you consider that Toriyama forgot about his own character but the animators at Toei didn't.

Did I forget to mention that earlier or something? Because that's sort of how I've been looking at it, myself.

How much did they show of the Other World Tournament? Did they show the ending when Goku was declared the "winner"?

I simply don't understand why they showed the Other World Tournament. I can understand why they would cut on the History of Trunks bit that happens once Gohan goes SS2, due to the earthquake, but why include something that doesn't add any plot?

Well the alternative was opening the can of worms that is the beginning of the Boo arc...

Because they needed to fill an episode?

If they needed to fill the episode they should've used footage from episode 200 of Gohan on on his way to college which I think would've been way more appropriate.
