Seriously when have the japanese made a mature comedy cartoon, or for that matter had a mature sense of humor.AgitoZ wrote:As Dragon Ball? Then it probably isn't very adult.Nex Carnifex wrote:Most "adult anime" uses the exact same humor anyway

Re: What is the best translation of Dragon Ball possible?
Dragon ball may have immature humor, but that doesn't make it any less genuine. I'm mad because they ruined its potential to be at least bearably intelligent, but instead its just littered with annoying overly childish words like phooey and other gay shit. Dragon ball is for little kids ok but there is a reason adults like you like it, because it actually isn't for really little kids.

I think you need to worry about your own maturity and childish speaking patterns before you start critiquing kids comics for being aimed at kids.Nex Carnifex wrote:gay

The Viz manga isn't as immature sounding as the original poster thinks. I especially wonder considering his terrible grammer and inability to post his thoughts in one post rather than post multiple ones in a row.

Well I'm not exactly an adult but I don't think my point is any less relevant because of slang, it can be aimed at kids but do it well nevertheless, if dragon ball is aimed at 15+ I'm well in it's age group but I can see bad writingKendamu wrote:I think you need to worry about your own maturity and childish speaking patterns before you start critiquing kids comics for being aimed at kids.Nex Carnifex wrote:gay

It's aimed at kids around 8.
Edit: Y'know I'm not one to call "troll" at the tip of a hat but this seems textbook. I'm just going to leave this thread be until a mod gets here.

The low end of the age range for Dragonball is around 7-ish. You're 15. Of course it isn't going to challenge your worldview or be written in a way that you can get us to help you convince yourself that it's some hardcore teen/adult material.Nex Carnifex wrote:Well I'm not exactly an adult but I don't think my point is any less relevant because of slang, it can be aimed at kids but do it well nevertheless, if dragon ball is aimed at 15+ I'm well in it's age group but I can see bad writingKendamu wrote:I think you need to worry about your own maturity and childish speaking patterns before you start critiquing kids comics for being aimed at kids.Nex Carnifex wrote:gay
Go watch some Cowboy Bebop if you're looking for something with more mature themes. It's a great show. Dragonball is more of a "this is fun" sort of lighthearted deal.

Differences in Japanese and American culture and the time period Dragonball was written in is largely to blame for why it doesn't fall strictly into what you may consider completely appropriate for children.

I believe you but it certainly seems more intelligent and mature than say robot chicken, which is an adult show. Dragon ball z however was great and serious, I watched it with my dad and he loved it, we watched it with subtitles and viz manga is definitely not as the good as those in terms of maturity or quality.

I dontpwrsonally see the huge difference. They're the same story with slightly different wording and varying amounts of child penis.

Dragon ball z was a lot darker are you lidding, cell sucking people up, drive by shooting, sniping an old couple, genocide of the saiyans, snapping vegetas arm, crushing the heads of the ginyu force, sticking hos arm inside someone, buy blasting of the head of bibidy, buu poping someones skin with himself. This shit is more violent than alien. Kiddy 6 year old shit.

Fuck spell check on cell phones
Re: What is the best translation of Dragon Ball possible?
All of which are not nearly as graphic as they sound. The series does have a couple of dark moments but the majority of it is very light hearted.Nex Carnifex wrote:Dragon ball z was a lot darker are you lidding, cell sucking people up, drive by shooting, sniping an old couple, genocide of the saiyans, snapping vegetas arm, crushing the heads of the ginyu force, sticking hos arm inside someone, buy blasting of the head of vividly, buy pooping someones skin with himself. Re: What is the best translation of Dragon Ball possible?
It's not really much darker. In the original 16 volumes, what about Piccolo Daimo breaking Goku's arm and legs with rocks, or Goku punching a giant hole through Piccolo Daimo, or Piccolo blasting a bloody hole through Goku's shoulder in the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai, or Tao PaiPai throwing Bora up into the air and impaling him on a spear. There's not really that huge a difference in violence. Also, what ZAR says. Keep in mind, it's all actually the same series. The Anime just changed it...well, because they wanted to. Also, I would like to note that most of the instances you're referencing aren't changed at all in the VIZ version of the manga.
And yes, Dragon Ball was written/intended for children. Yes, it can be enjoyed by any age group (many fans on this forum are adults), but that was not it's original, primary audience. To re-iterate what others have said, what's acceptable for children in 1980's Japan is very different to what you may consider acceptable now and wherever you live.
Ya know, I'm beginning to think that AnimeLabs subs would be more your cup of tea

Agreed but light hearted doesn't mean for babies, I remember frieza all cut up during that fight with goku, his limbs were missing that's disturbingZAR wrote:All of which are not nearly as graphic as they sound. I don't remember who said it but it went along the lines of, "HARDCORE! AMERICAN! PUNCHES TO THE HEAD! FUCK YEAH!!"
Also... "DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN I AM PICCOLO DUN DUN"[/electric guitar]
Other than that, I'm out. This isn't going anywhere and isn't going to go anywhere. It's just a very wordy case of "But, but... HARDCORE!" "No, not really. Colorful fun." "Nu-uh!" "Yeuh-huh!"
