It seems like they were trying to cash in on the hype the surrounding just when a Super Saiyan would appear. At the time the movie's version was just supposed to be a real Super Saiyan (the term "False Super Saiyan" wasn't coined until Daizenshuu 6 came out years later), and Toriyama was the one who suggested that Goku's hair stand up straight like that. Apparently between the making of the movie and Goku becoming a Super Saiyain in the manga, Toriyama just came up with different ideas of what a Super Saiyan should look like, though the upright hair stayed the same.GS7X7 wrote:Hmm... I wonder though, why introduce "fake Super Saiyan" in a non-canonical movie for a few minutes then introduce the "real Super Saiyan" shortly later and make it so larger than life? That's where I'm confused....

Well, at the very least... we weren't stuck with non-blonde Super Saiyans because of this movie. Thank God they introduced Super Saiyan in a non-canon movie so that Toriyama could improve upon it.
If that's the case then that would probably make this the best of the movies for that reason alone.

Imo, a great podcast would be, "what if the black-haired Super Saiyan shown in Movie 4 had been originally introduced in the manga"? It'd be hard to imagine DBZ without that iconic, giant golden-haired look for the Saiyans.

What in the sweet hell? The 4th movie is one of my favorites, in fact some of my friends started watching the show just because of movie 4 even though they've seen episodes before.
The only movie I hated was 11, and of the rest, I didn't particularly like 1, 7 and 9

I actually enjoyed Movies 4 and 11.
The only one I actually disliked was Movie 10 and it put me to sleep.

Re: DBZ Movie 4- unfairly hated?
I don't really mind 4, it was alright, but I didn't really like 11. I did enjoy 10, but only because it contained quite a bit of regular Super Saiyan Broli animation, not the movie itself. I like Broli's design for his normal SS form, even though I don't particularly like the character. So it was nice to see him in action without being buff or blue/purple/turquoise/whatever hair.Castor Troy wrote:I actually enjoyed Movies 4 and 11.

Re: DBZ Movie 4- unfairly hated?
I liked movie 4 more than movie 2, but it's definitely.. one of the worst movies in my book, but also, I only really like movie 12, 13, 8, 6, 1 and 3.GS7X7 wrote:DBZ Movie is considered to be one of the worst DBZ movies by fans. (sometimes DBZ 11 is more hated)
I think a large part of this is because most American fans never saw the Piccolo saga in Dragon Ball before viewing this movie. (as Funimation didn't air all of DB prior to DBZ) That makes a lot of what happens in DBZ Movie 4 (especially "Super Namek") make very little sense.
That said, I gotta know- for people in other countries who saw all of Dragon Ball prior to DBZ and DBZ Movie 4, or people who at least saw DB fansubbed prior to DBZ and DBZ Movie 4 on fansub, did you like the movie? Is hatred of it just an American thing because it makes a -lot- less sense if you've never seen the Piccolo saga? Or do others have a lot more love for it?
Edit: edited my post because of an embarrassing typo...

The fight between Goku and Slug was meh, Goku could've killed Slug with the Kaioken easily but he didnt use it until Piccolo gave him his energy.
As for worst movies: Return of Cooler, I fell asleep until the end.
BioBroly was alright until the end, which was anticlimatic.

Never cared for the other Brolly movies... it would have been nice to see him go sane and devise a genius, twisted plan to take over.
In the first he kicked ass and didn't take any names. In the other ones... not so much.

Re: DBZ Movie 4- unfairly hated?
Movie4 gives ChiChi a chance to pwn some henchmen, and has Goku and Krillin working together in the beginning. And it just has an atmosphere to it that most of the movies lack.
Movies 6 and 7 don't really do anything for me. Six tried some interesting concepts, I guess. Seven just... blah.
I haven't seen all of movie 11 (I've really only seen a few minutes of it), but I haven't heard anything that makes me think it'll be bad. Actually, everything seems to make it sound more fun than some of the others.

Its plot is basically a copy of the previous movie, and it introduces a totally awesome Super Saiyan (better than the canon one, imo) for a couple minutes only to drop it and go back to the fucking Spirit Bomb.
That's the extent of my irritation with it.

I will say this about movie 4. Brice Armstrong's voice for Lord Slug was pretty cool.
Re: DBZ Movie 4- unfairly hated?
Well, I prefer it over Movie 3 because it doesn't have that overlong Oozaru Gohan segment.Rocketman wrote:Its plot is basically a copy of the previous movie, and it introduces a totally awesome Super Saiyan (better than the canon one, imo) for a couple minutes only to drop it and go back to the fucking Spirit Bomb.

Re: DBZ Movie 4- unfairly hated?
I dislike it because it's derivative, but not of the Piccolo Daimao arc from Dragonball - it's derivative of the last movie. In both films an Evil Alien Overlord comes to Earth to fundamentally alter the planet's environment - both rendering it uninhabitable in process - in the furtherance of their own goals. But where the third film was fairly forward-thinking for the series, including as it did an environmental message, Lord Slug reduced the premise to a mere backdrop.
I also dislike it on stylistic grounds. Gone are the relatively static backdrops and complicated choreography often associated with the first three films in the series. In their place a new trend has established itself, one which more closely parallels the style used in the anime series: fluid, heavily kinetic fight scenes interspersed with snippets of dialogue at random intervals. It's not necessarily a change for the better, as in my view some of the atmosphere of the Nishio movies has been lost in favor of shorter run-times and a style more palatable to Western audiences.
