Re: Do you understand Japanese?
I actually recently began studying Japanese at a university. I don't know nearly enough to follow a real conversation yet, but it is much easier to get the basic gist of something now that I know the basics.

Re: Do you understand Japanese?
I studied Japanese for 2 years. German 3 and a half, French 2 and now Spanish a half a year (big mistake). Japanese would be cool to learn, but I'm not connected to the culture, it's not in my blood.

Re: Do you understand Japanese?
I can't speak Japanese. In fact, I've once tried to speak to a couple of Japanese girls in a ramen shop and incorporated some Japanese within my English. I was really trying to invite them to join the set of Len Wiseman's upcoming remake of "Total Recall" since the TR crew was looking for some "harajuku girls".
However, being that Chinese is my native language, I would have absolutely no problem with kanji. And ironically enough, I actually learned how to read Chinese because of Dragonball. (I'm a Chinese born in Canada so being a CBC that's able to read Chinese, I'm a rarity!) I can also read some katakana. Once again, I learn those through collecting Dragonball Cardass. Dragonball is like a gateway drug to reading!
I'd also like to note that I wasn't able to read Chinese until I was in my early teens. So there is a big chunk of my childhood where I was practically illiterate in the Chinese language. Oh, another thing! Yes, I worked on "Total Recall". And yes, you might even see me on the big screen. Go see "Total Recall"! Coming to theatres August 3rd, 2012!

The world is your's.
Re: Do you understand Japanese?
I can understand a handful of words and phrases, mostly thanks to Dragon Ball and The Legend of Zelda. I tried learning the language a couple of times, but I really don't have a knack for linguistics. Or maybe I'm just not passionate enough about it.
I thought I caught that film in 1990. But then, my memory has been pretty weird since I went to Rekall, Inc.tinlunlau wrote:Go see "Total Recall"! Coming to theatres August 3rd, 2012!
Re: Do you understand Japanese?
I have seen Dragonball enough times to work out what is being said in a raw version and i know quite a few Japanese words which also help. I learned the basics from Dragonball and other anime e.g. Vegeta counting the Saibamen, "ichi, ni, san, shi/yon...” I broke down the movie titles such as ore ga yaranakya dare ga yaru to understand each word. I am currently using Rosetta stone to enhance my knowledge.
So overall I can speak and understand quite a bit of Japanese but cannot read any of it yet. :'(

"No. A sword is a weapon. Kenjutsu is the art of killing. Whatever pretty words you use to speak of it, this is its true nature. What Miss Kaoru says are the words of one who has never dirtied her hands. An idealistic joke. But, I like Miss Kaoru's idealism better than its true nature. If one can ask so much, I want the world to accept this joke as its true nature."
