Re: Do you understand Japanese?
I can just barely understand basic stuff. I got most of what was being said in one of the movies, but I can't actually speak Japanese.
Re: Do you understand Japanese?
I'm not fluent, but I could watch an episode raw.
Re: Do you understand Japanese?
I get the basic idea of what's going on, but nothing too specific.

Re: Do you understand Japanese?
I use to be fluent at age 10, however I haven't used the language since last week and my memory was a little fuzzy. I remember more than the basics like general conversation sentences but that's about it.
It's definitely something I have to practice on.

Re: Do you understand Japanese?
I understand basics and lot of words, but I can't speak and I still didn't learn the half of basic Hiragana and Katakana.
But from watching raw Japanese series, I understand about 1-2/4 of whole sentences from what is spoken.
I learnt it by listening and lot of from my GF studying Japanese studies on Charles University.

Re: Do you understand Japanese?
My Japanese listening comprehensive is ridiculously bad compared to my reading comprehension (my speaking skills aren't anything to write home about either), but I can still get by fine in DB without subtitles. Of course, it helps already being very familiar with all the dialogue via the manga. Other shows can be tricky though. This disparity is largely because I've always been a book-oriented person, and now that I'm not taking any Japanese classes/studying abroad my main source for keeping up my Japanese is reading websites, books, and manga. But my hearing in general has always been a little shaky. Sometimes I have to put the subtitles on for English movies if I want to catch every line, and I have trouble understanding song lyrics.

Re: Do you understand Japanese?
I'm about the same as the previous two responses. I know all hiragana/katakana, and the first 80 grade one kanji (as well as a bunch of other random characters). As with Herms, I'm much better at reading than speaking/comprehending verbal communication. However, there are certain episodes of Dragon Ball that I can watch without subtitles.
Re: Do you understand Japanese?
I don't know a single bit of Japanese besides "kuso!" Everything else is essentially gibberish to my ears.

Only the basic phrases you'd learn by watching shonen.

Re: Do you understand Japanese?
I only know what a few basic words mean and am familiar with some words (Gensō Suikoden) because they happen to be the title of an RPG franchise, though I probably don't do the words justice if I were to say them aloud.

Re: Do you understand Japanese?
I can understand a few words but not enough to watch a ep without subs also I can only read one thing of Hiragana の = no. Though when I get the money I plan to take classes. Also yes I have learned most of my Japanese by catching things in subtitles in DBZ. But DB wasn't my first inspiration to learn Japanese it was me as a little kid wishing I could understand the language so I could get Nintendo games before they came out over here.

Re: Do you understand Japanese?
I studied it for a couple years in college, can hold basic conversation, and can watch really simple shows like Nintama Rantaro without much trouble, but I haven't kept up on it extremely well so I couldn't do some awesome Daizenshuu translation or whatever. I'm sure if I picked it back up it wouldn't be too hard to get back up to speed.
My interest in Japanese started with Karate because of Ninja Turtles. As I'm a big fan of comics and animation in general, the overwhelming visual quality of anime (compared to typical 1980s and 1990s US animation) got me further interested in Japanese stuff. By the time I got to a school that offered it, I obviously took the opportunity.
My interest in Asian stuff has grown from Japanese to just Asian in general thanks to a lot of my foreign friends in college.
Koreans and Taiwanese know how to fucking party!

I know all Hiragana/Katakana, some grade 1 kanji, and basic grammar.
I am able to watch Dragon Ball without subtitles and still be able to grasp the main idea.

Re: Do you understand Japanese?
I can understand certain things just by repetition lol I can understand, "Bring it on," "Damn," the entire Genki Dama chant, when they call the "Contestant" so and so. The old Japanese PS1 games helped, as a lot of it I picked up from there. But that's about it. Still need the subtitles. Although I kind of already know what they're saying, just by watching the damn thing like 30 times. The dub might have been bad, but I find myself knowing exactly what they are going to say (in the Japanese one) before they say it. So I guess it was pretty accurate...just not fully. The dub might be like, "Folks, Spopovich was taken out by the World Champion, Her[bleep] in the first round at the last tournament! Whoa, just goes to show you the power of the Champ!" and in the original it could be like, "Spopovitch was eliminated in the first round by Mr. Satan at the last tournament!" It's like the dub gets the point across, but just sprinkles random nonsense into it. So really, I could watch the entire thing with no subtitles, because while I only watched the original Japanese a handful of times (not to the point where I memorize line for line), I just kind of remember the dub and it helps me follow along lol Since that is what I saw a million and one times.
Re: Do you understand Japanese?
Like Herms, I'm better at reading than I am at speaking and hearing, but am by no means destitute at it. I can comfortably watch most animes Raw... Except Death Note... my god it's hard to keep up with all the fast-spoken over-technical monologues...
But I watch all DB Properties Raw unless I'm watching specifically to see the dub (Such is the case with Kai)
