Dragon Ball Z Kai Season 1 Discussion
Re: Dragon Ball Z Kai Season 1 Discussion
Hey, welcome to Daizex, Nadian! Yeah, it is kinda weird that Disc 2 was different. Maybe they... intended for these sets to have Yamamoto?
Re: Dragon Ball Z Kai Season 1 Discussion
Without insight into Funimation's manufacturing cycle it's impossible to say for certain. Perhaps these sets normally reuse discs because Funimation also has excess stock of the older releases that hadn't moved through. Just relabel and repackage and voila! It could mean that any new discs they actually print will have the Kikuchi score while still allowing for a sufficiently large supply of Yamamoto score.
But it also means that, without any word from Funimation, we're right back where we started.
Now that I think about it, I dealt with that general issue recently with NIS's Toradora and Persona releases. Specifically, their first releases when the "ghosting" issue came up. In reality, what had happened was NIS had deinterlaced the video. A number of months later I re-bought those sets to get "fixed" copies with the original interlaced video. (I wanted both versions of the release.) Toradora's was right as expected, Persona's was a second deinterlaced one. This probably makes sense since the former was probably a much more popular series and sold out their deinterlaced copies much faster.
Now, that's NIS who were testing the market for the first time. Funimation (who are more familiar with their place in the market) might intentionally overstock on DVDs knowing that they will be repackaging them in a year or two.

Re: Dragon Ball Z Kai Season 1 Discussion
So the general consensus is that it contains the Yamamoto score? This release is such a mess...
Funny I waited on buying these sets after the scandal happened because I originally was very critical of Yamamoto's score and was so happy that Kai was getting remixed with Kikuchi's music, only to find out in the long run that the mix is absolutely dreadful, limited to what seems to be the same six songs repeated over and over and over again for the entire series. Kikuchi Kai has killed any interest I had in M-740, 741, and 742, tracks I used to love before Kai. I can only take so much before I go crazy.

I feel the exact same way. I used to dislike the Yamamoto score in certain parts but now I really miss it. And, I now can't stand certain pieces of the Kikuchi score because they are constantly overused in Kai. This whole music scandal has made me have no interest in Kai once I finish seeing the dub on Nicktoons.Levlik wrote:So the general consensus is that it contains the Yamamoto score? Also I regret ever saying I wanted Kai with the Kikuchi music because it turned out to be a complete mess.

You guys keep mentioning that Kai with the Kikuchi score uses the same tracks over and over again as if it's a negative. It's not only limited to Kai, Z was kinda the same way, especially during the Saiyan and Freeza sagas.

"Kinda" is the understatement of the century. Yes, tracks repeated a lot in Z, but they at least had a large library of tracks to choose from, and more tracks were introduced once new movies came out.thedarkuniter wrote:You guys keep mentioning that Kai with the Kikuchi score uses the same tracks over and over again as if it's a negative. With Kikuchi Kai they seem to be limited to the batch of TV BGM from the very first handful of episodes and a handful of tracks from Movies 7 and 8. M735, M737, M740, M741, M742, M711, M1522, M1523, M1404, and M1420 repeat ad nausieum throughout the entire series and I swear every single episode I've seen is some arrangement of these tracks, give or take a few. It makes the old argument of the Japanese BGM repeating itself seem like nothing in comparison. It was awesome the first time I watched it but after a short while you start to realize every episode, Raditz to Cell, sounds exactly the same. And that's not an exaggeration, sadly.

It's overwhelmingly less annoying in Z because each arc has its themes (like M700 and M800 in the Saiyan arc, and M900 and M1000 in the Freeza arc). Speaking of Kai, it has the same little choice throughout the entire series. It's really annoying.thedarkuniter wrote:You guys keep mentioning that Kai with the Kikuchi score uses the same tracks over and over again as if it's a negative. Seems like Amazon.com is out of stock for the Season 1 set. I guess Funimation's fixing the sets.

Good, now we just have to wait for someone to buy the refurbished set.
Funi still hasn't replied to any of the three emails I've sent them. Maybe they're waiting.

Re: Dragon Ball Z Kai Season 1 Discussion
Yep, FUNimation indeed called for a recall.
"Funimation sent us a recall announcement this morning requesting that we pull all copies of the new DragonBall Z Kai Season 1 Set, item numbers FN-08892 and FN-08893. I am not aware of any actual problem with the disks, and they only noted 'extenuating circumstances' (whatever that means) for the recall. Since the request was for both the DVD and the BD version, I suspect it's some sort of licensing issue that has cropped up (ie: perhaps the BD should not have been both A & B encoded, the cover art was not fully authorized, or something like that). I have sent them an e-mail requesting clarification on the issue, and once they get back to us with the actual reason for the recall we'll decide if we need to pull these from inventory."

You guys pretty much nailed it. I really don't know why anyone would rather buy these season kai sets with the Kikuchi score as it is. It's just so downright terrible. Screw consistency. If I wasn't able to replace the music myself, I wouldn't have bought Part 5 and 6, or any of the future sets. That's how bad this replacement business is--and I really love Kikuchi's music, but the bare bones selection, and utter repetition of the the tracks turn great music into background noise even worse and irritating than even the Faulconer BGM was back in the day. It's too bad funi didn't decide to try to custom score with Kikuchi, or hell, even Faulconer pieces. Anything would be better than what's been done.Levlik wrote:"Kinda" is the understatement of the century. I would of rather them put no music at all in then this butchery.
Re: Dragon Ball Z Kai Season 1 Discussion
Lol, at least they should put such audio track as an optional extra.Pokewhiz7 wrote:I would of rather them put no music at all in then this butchery.

I bet such a feature would increase sales...and the amount of people on Youtube playing different songs over scenes.kei17 wrote:Lol, at least they should put such audio track as an optional extra.Pokewhiz7 wrote:I would of rather them put no music at all in then this butchery.
Heck, I'd sell off my Season Sets and first 3 Double Feature DVD's if there were an option for voiceless episodes but still keeping the SFX and Music.

Hopefully with the recall FUNImation will fix the score on the season sets. Even though I prefer Yamamoto, this would at least provide consistency with parts 5 and onward and those who wanted Kikuchi will get to listen to it.
Re: Dragon Ball Z Kai Season 1 Discussion
Yup, time to grap the Parts now.
