Horikawa's performance doesn't contrast Vegeta. Vegeta has times when he's smug and calm, which is covered in both sub and Kai's dub. And yet other times, he loses his shit, and that's also covered in both versions.AgitoZ wrote: I don't think you quite get what I mean when I say subtle. The performance is subtle because it contrasts with the character so greatly. It's like Horikawa's performance of Vegeta. You'd think he'd have this angry, over the top performance, but instead has this smooth performance with contrasts greatly with his actions.
I guess you all just expect that the character has to be spelled out to you through the performance.
As for the TV broadcast, Rager still sounds magnificent.
I don't expect everything to be spelled out, but I do expect emotions and character traits to be portrayed properly. Those are different aspects of the characters, and they're all represented fully in both versions.
Yusuke's dub work portrayed his character properly. When he gets angry, upset, happy, frustrated, or worried, it all is portrayed right. His attitude is usually prevalent in the work for a reason though, he's a street punk. He may help his friends, but he's always glad to pick a fight and loves to do so. He gives lip to authority, is quick to anger, and this shows. Half the time he wants to be sad, he gets mad at the situation. Yet, when the time does come, the attitude does lighten up, and he sounds more calm (even if he's bottling up some emotions, which can be just slightly heard in the tone of the voice).
But that's enough on that.
It's only a few more days until the Cell Games begin, and we can see how voices new and old hold up together in this classic story. Knowing the outcome doesn't lessen my excitement, it only makes me more excited to see the changes.
