Dragonball: First Episode Preview

Post by Ashura » Tue Nov 22, 2011 5:56 am

Yo'! Happy Thanksgiving, ya'll.

For my birthday I treated myself to the Japanese Dragon Ball Dragonbox. Why didn't you guys tell me it was GIGANTIC? Holy crap, it's like 900 pounds of awesome.

Image

The guys over at Kanzentai were nice enough to post this really cool and pretty rare Dragon Ball First Episode Preview some time ago: http://www.kanzentai.com/features.php?id=dbox_perfect ... that happens to be missing from the Dragon Box, and is also unfortunately also in terrible macroblocked VHS quality.

Anyway, I've been working on a project where I've been researching the Dragon Ball film stock, and experimenting with a method to properly color correct the Dragon Box footage. Since I know you guys might be the only people on the internet who might dig this, for an early Thanksgiving present (because everyone gives presents on Thanksgiving, right? Right?), I recut the footage for this trailer using the first episode from the Dragon Box frame by (fracking) frame, removed the color cast, color corrected it using my current findings, remade the unique title cards, did postproduction work, and then timed subtiles for it using Kanzentai's translation.

An interesting thing I found is that in the trailer, though, is it contains two unfinished scenes/alternate takes in it:

Image

First, in the trailer, Bulma's legs are missing. It might not have been finished, or it could be because they edited it to seem like the jump was Goku's reaction to getting shot. In this second shot, they didn't have this cool little star animation that's in the final episode. To remove these, I pulled a 1990's Funimation and paiiiiiinted them a awwwwwaaaay.

Anyway, enjoy!

Also, remember, if SOPA passes, we wouldn't be able to do this cool kind of fair use stuff anymore: http://daizex.fanboyreview.net/viewtopi ... =7&t=18683
Also also... if this ever actually gets put into some kind of official release, please buy it. I doubt it'll ever come to light, but you never know. :)

Nice job. I did the same about a year and a half ago, except the only bits I reconstructed were the title cards and getting rid of Bulma's legs.

I take that as a compliment, since I know how good you are when it comes to this kind of editing. :)

The other thing I noticed doing this is just how often on the Dragon Box you can see the lower edges of the film frame. You can see it on those two shots up there, but it's even worse in some shots.

Cool stuff! Happy Thanksgiving! It keeps asking me for a password? What is it please?
The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

You unrar it with WinRAR or any other unraring utility.

1. 7zip (it's always free of charge)
2. Open it up and type FEP (the password), extract it and then...
3. Open CCCP's Media Player or any other and there you go (The KMPlayer, etc), and you're watching it.

If you have winrar already downloaded, all you have to do is right click on the file you want to use, then the drop menu should come up and it should say extract to(should say the name of the file) click and type in password. But if this still doesn't help, with Ashura permission I will upload it to youtube that way you can see it. but i would delete it off afterwards but I gotta have Ashura's permission first

I just watched this and I liked it. You even went further than I did. It all flows seamlessly. Very good work. I love it!
Oh, just to answer your question here; I'm returning to that project later tonight. I don't have class tomorrow and I'll have plenty of free time this weekend.

Yes, I finally watched it! I like the font used for the subtitles, although I'm not a fan of the yellow. Other than that, it was awesome! Great work!

It's the translation from Kanzentai, so most likely... I noted this up in the first post. :) Though I did rewrite it slightly to help fit within overscan, etc, so it looks right if you play it on tv.

I didn't ask, so hopefully the Kanzentai crew doesn't mind too much. I was sort of hoping since their whole website is based upon the premise of companies letting them graciously play around with their copyrighted material, that they feel the same about their own material and others using it in ways like this.
