Do you consider Dr. Slump canon?

Post by DBZGTKOSDH » Mon Dec 05, 2011 4:16 pm

In the Red Ribbon Army arc, Goku and General Blue went to Penguin Village, where he met Arale and others. However if you have read/watched Dr. Slump, the world there is very strange and different compared to Dragon Ball, for example we see Kami(God) himself, but instead of the old Namekian we all know, he is a Muten-Roshi-like character, or there are refferences to USA and China, places that doesn't exist in the Dragon World. So, if you believe that Dr. Slump is canon or non-canon, how do you explain it's existanse?

Do you consider Dr. Slump cannon?
Do I consider Dr. Slump to be a large, projectile-throwing weapon? Not usually, but I'm open to new possibilities.

As to whether I consider it canon to Dragon Ball, sure... I guess. Maybe. However, it's its own unique pocket of spacetime that happens to physically exist in the Dragon World, but its physics, deities, etc., are all its own. Goku just happened to stumble into it.

As for me, I always have to wonder what that means for the inhabitants of Penguin Village when Buu kills everyone on earth. Pretty gory stuff...

Technically God in Dr. Slump is god of the galaxy rather than Earth, so he contradicts Kaio rather than the old slug guy.

Anyway, the crossover in DB rather heavily references things from even the end of Dr. Slump, including Obotcha Man's cats and delivery job, Turbo's existence, Taro being a police officer, etc (the only thing out of place is Nikochan still being on Earth). So it seems to specifically be a continuation of Dr. Slump instead of the Dr. Slump characters just being re-used like in a Tezuka Star System kind of way. Senbe even mentions that this is the first time he's appeared in Jump in a long time, clearly referencing Toriyama's old series itself. How the various contradictions between Dr. Slump's world and that of DB can be reconciled is something it's probably best not to bother thinking about, but they mostly result from things introduced or clarified after the crossover; at the time DB's world still seemed pretty compatible with Dr. Slump's. Just think of Penguin Village as its own pocket dimension or an axis point between alternate worlds, if it helps you.

Than the Neko Majin Z 5 is a continuation of Dragonball?

I view Dr. Slump and Neko Majin as canon to Dragon Ball, with slight alterations. The events happen, just not exactly as depicted. You basically just go through and use a red sharpie to cross out anything with impossible physics used for the sake of a gag (punching the Earth in half, multiple times without "Dues ex Dragon Balls"), or anything that just couldn't happen at all (Vegeta working for Freeza, and Freeza being alive).
Direct translations of the Korean DB Online timeline and guidebook.
My personal "canon" and BP list. (Coming Soon)

The original 1980s Dr. Slump? Yes. Except for the whole God thing I don't see why not.

That crappy 1997 remake? Hell no! Not only did all the character have complete remakes that look nothing like 80s counterparts (Similar to Black, White, and Metallic's redesigns in Path to Ultimate Strength) but that remake sucked even worse than GT.

@Kaboom: That would entail them using the dragonballs dozens of times within just a few years.

Yeah, it's pretty clearly the characters from after the end of DB, as opposed to something like Cross Epoch where it's just completely original versions Goku and co. Whether that makes Neko Majin Z 5 part of DB's canon is another question, but DB is part of NMZ 5's backstory.

The cracks on the ground don't look very large on the 5th panel of the first page and on the 3rd panel of the second page.
Couldn't the gravity of Earth solve the problem? If the parts could attract each other, there would be no need to use the Dragon Balls.

Breaking the Earth in two is not that much worse than Goku flying to the moon or Kame-sennin destroying it.

Of course the world-destroyer Ki attacks were given a more serious approach as the series was given a darken tone...

OK, I fixed cannon to canon.

On topic, I believe that Penguin Village exists in Dragon World, but it's in something like a "gag zone". Neko Majin, possibly takes place at an aeria near this "gag zone", so, that's why realy there are different rules and strange things happen in Dr. Slump & Neko Majin.

Do you know what happens when 3,300,000,000,000,000,000,000 tons of rock and iron slams into another 3,300,000,000,000,000,000,000 tons?

Putting aside that and the fact that the Earth isn't a solid object, and the fact that anything powerful enough to split the planet would also melt its surface, and the fact that when the Earth's crust opens up and exposes the hot gooey interior we call the result a volcano, and the fact that the air would rush in to fill the newly created void so it would be too thin to breathe on the planetary fragments, and the fact that splitting the Earth creates separate planets with their own gravity fields so it would be impossible to run on a planet with 1/4th the mass of Earth then sure, everything can be resolved.

tl;dr: No.

I don't view Dr. Slump as canon seeing that they appear to live in two different worlds since I recall that Dr. Slump contains references to the real world?

Ok, then. Now I support the "it's a gag manga" theory.

Eh, if Neko Majin is canon to Dragon Ball, then why is there a proper Saiyan? Unless it takes place prior to Dragon Ball, which I'm ignorant to since I only read a bit of it.

Cause it's a gag manga.

The big problem is that no one working on the series has ever stated a true canon or that there even is one to the series. Really, simplest way to categorize Neko Majin's relation to the series is to say that NM uses it as its backstory.

Neko Majin is a parody and I don't think it should be view as canon even if it was created by Akira Toriyama. Neko Majin is about as canon to Dragon Ball as Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein is to the Universal Frankenstein monster movies if you ask me.

It's not canon. But there is a good chance that say, Toriyama just wrote it and Toei animated it, it would be 100% non-canon.

Why? Cause it's a parody alone? It's got as many contradictions as other legitimate sequels to Universal's Frankenstein. I'd say that movie is just like NM, it's backstory is the Frankenstein movies, but it doesn't necessarily belong nor not belong in it.
