If anyone has any of the DB/DBZ/DBGT or Maho Tsuaki Sally Japanese single DVD's that they'd be interested in selling send me a PM and I'll see if we can work something out.

Re: Nicktoons to Air DBGT in North America (Confirmed)
Well, for clarification's sake, the original Japanese music was composed by a guy called Akihito Tokunaga. So that's not the music we're referring to. In this case, "Menza's music," refers to the alternate musical score that was composed for the U.S. dub (Canada, the UK, and a few others got a different English dub altogether that kept Tokunaga's score). Of course, whether or not the music is "good" is entirely based on opinion. However, the commonly-held opinion is that, yes, it is indeed quite bad. Fans of the original Japanese version hated it, fans of Faulconer's music hated it, and the rumor going around at the time was that many actors and execs at FUNimation didn't like it either. Feel free to check it out and decide for yourself, though.superrayman3 wrote:Just out of curiosity is Mark Menza's music really that bad i've never seen GT before so I don't know how Menza's music sounds.penguintruth wrote:*Bangs head on desk*

A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

It's a really sleepy, droning guitar score, from what I remember.superrayman3 wrote:Just out of curiosity is Mark Menza's music really that bad i've never seen GT before so I don't know how Menza's music sounds.penguintruth wrote:*Bangs head on desk*

Just though I'd add:
I think there will be 3 more of these. Well, either 2 or 3. I know they'll be one for Wednesday and Thursday for sure. I'm not positive about Friday since the code for Friday is supposed to be for ep.98 of Kai.

It's like recording of drunken or rather, Country enthusiasts junked by LSD, sitting around the campfire with guitar and roasting marshmallows.superrayman3 wrote:Just out of curiosity is Mark Menza's music really that bad i've never seen GT before so I don't know how Menza's music sounds.penguintruth wrote:*Bangs head on desk*

And the rap opening doesn't fit at all. I can only imagine country one with lyrics........ ''I'm sitting with my cow, as she milks it down to buckeeeet......''

For Menza in GT and the rap, it's nostalgic but even I know it's terrible.
Would of been interesting how Faulconer and co would have worked on GT's soundtrack.

I'm no big fan of Faulconer, but really, his music isn't bad, those mixtape scores the mixing crew did were what actually downgraded it a lot.
It was like listening to some techno-rock megamix AMV dubbed with SFX.
So I think he could do a great music for GT, as I was listening to his OST CD's, I liked quite lot of tracks and in Legacy of Goku and Buu's Fury, the music fits perfectly.

Re: Nicktoons to Air DBGT in North America (Confirmed)
After Menza's music came out, there was a lot of comments to the effect of, "Oh man, even FAULCONER wasn't this bad!"
It's interesting to see that sentiment returning. Not just in other posters, but in myself as well. I'm no Faulconer fan, but I'd take his music in a heartbeat over Menza's. Menza's music was--much like someone else mentioned earlier--mostly a bunch of droning guitars. It gave GT this very dark and atmospheric feeling which (in my opinion of course) didn't fit the series very well at all. Especially the early episodes which seemed to be more of a return to the comedic routes of "Dragon Ball." Very often, the emotional tone of the music would clash with the emotional tone of the scenes.

The whole felt like elevator music to me. Like literally, a lot of it, I could imagine in an elevator.

I once used to bash Bruce Faulconer worse than just about anyone else online as a completely untalented hack.superrayman3 wrote:Just out of curiosity is Mark Menza's music really that bad i've never seen GT before so I don't know how Menza's music sounds.penguintruth wrote:*Bangs head on desk*

Menza singlehandedly made me see all the goodness in Faulconer's soundtrack because Menza was so incredibly horrible beyond description. (imo)

Re: Nicktoons to Air DBGT in North America (Confirmed)
Again, it's not that the music is terrible, or that Menza has no talent. It's that the music never stops playing, and isn't particularly fitting for what happens to be going on.

Yeah, I have to agree with you here. There are some Menza pieces that I like, just not where they're placed or how they're used.batistabus wrote:Again, it's not that the music is terrible, or that Menza has no talent. I actually didn't mind his score for the sixth movie, but it's just not Dragon Ball.
Re: Nicktoons to Air DBGT in North America (Confirmed)
I think what annoys me most about his music is that every song sounds exactly the same. It's always this eerie, drowning guitar. All of his music sounds like it belongs in a zombie horror survival game, and it just does not fit GT at all....some examples:

Re: Nicktoons to Air DBGT in North America (Confirmed)
One last thing to add...
I think what's most jarring about Menza's score is the fact that many fans consider GT's music to be it's most saving grace.
Nobody really talks about DBZ and says, "You know, DBZ's one saving grace throughout watching was the music."
That factor, combined with the repetitive-dark-similar nature of the songs and it all being a big step-down from Faulconer, is what makes the Menza score so notorious.
....
Btw, why did they replace Faulconer with Menza anyway?
My only guess is that, like with the GT rap song, they wanted to have music that was a lot darker/harder for the "hardcore" atmosphere they were presenting with their version of GT and maybe they thought Bruce's style didn't match what they wanted.

Re: Nicktoons to Air DBGT in North America (Confirmed)
His score is a pure shit. It's more like some irritating background noise than music. Trying to make the score sound "hard-core" in GT, which is more aimed at younger people than Z was, is a terrible idea. It's really a shame that present-day kids have to watch the show with such a piece of shit. (GT itself also is a piece of shit for me, but it's a different story.)

It's a shame the Blue Water had such horrible voice acting....
I've seen a few episodes of it (1st, last, some middle ones) but, it was pretty bad. (Pan is amazing though! Her VA kinda put Funi's to shame)
Still, the dialogue is INSANELY accurate to the Japanese version, I think they even go with the exact translation for Tenkaichi Budokai! And the music is phenomenal!
If one can be forgiving of the very poor voice-acting (particularly Vegeta, you can tell whoever voiced him took one look at his first appearance with the moustache and gave him a stereotypical voice based on it) then BW's dub is pretty good.

Can you really use that as a point when it's just the Japanese BGM (with a butchered intro song)?GS7X7 wrote:And the music is phenomenal!
I agree that her Blue water actress is better than FUNimation's, because she was an actual kid and FUNimation's actress didn't even really make an attempt to sound like one (she sounds almost 10 years older than Pan actually is I'd say). Add to that FUNimation's dialogue revisions which at times, as I think Magicbox once put it, turn the "Bitch-o-meter" up, making an already sometimes annoying character even worse.GS7X7 wrote:(Pan is amazing though! Absolutely! GT without the original music is like Frank Sinatra without his voice. GT is just completely unwatchable when the original music's taken away. Despite the flaws of Blue Water, if you come in with an open mind about the voices it is a pretty decent GT dub.

Not exact, but it's pretty literal and gets the point across.
