Artwork from Gohan's SSJ2 transformation

Post by kenisu3000 » Mon Dec 05, 2005 7:31 pm

I've never actually come forward and "admitted" I'm a cartoonist, have I? Well, now you know the truth.
Since over five years ago I've been enthralled by the entire (Japanese) scene of Gohan finally snapping and transforming to level 2 Super Saiya-jin after Cell crushes #16's head. Not only because of the insert song "Unmei no Hi", but also because of the shot where Gohan rears back so far you'd think his spine would break, and Masako Nozawa's KILLER scream accompanying it.
Over the years I've attempted to recreate this pose in my artwork, but never managed it very well. I figured I could do a satisfactory job of it when I got Vol. 34 of the old Jump Comics, which depicts the manga equivalent of this scene, but the particular image is a bit different (Toriyama's illustration doesn't have Gohan bending quite so far back). Finally, though, now that I have the DVD and can pause frame-by-frame, I think I've pulled it off:

I think you definately pulled it off.

That picture is something to be proud of. Although I can see a few flaws with the proportioning. I too have problems with that sometimes too. That stance is a hard one to draw, I have one of Gohan when he's fighting Super Buu, after absorbing Gotenks, and he breaks out of those donut rings, the pose is similar, mine's on a comic I made of the episode a few years back, you can easily see the proportion problems I had.

I don't crit though, basically, I don't like it much when it's done to me. Unless it's light and not 'Aww, your pictures crap, it like a 10 year old's blah blah'.

I too was happy when I first saw that scene a few years back. It was so much better than Funi or Ocean's. Well, obviously.

Here's my Gohan.

Edit: if I drew this again now it would be way better. :)

Edit. My brother persuaded me to show a picture of his, he is also a good drawer. He has a different style to me.

Now THAT'S some impressive stuff, Bejiita! I checked out your fan comic and you certainly know more about drawing DBZ characters than I do. Most of my life, I've had my own, one-of-a-kind drawing style (it looks kind of like the Muppets), but ever since I got into DBZ I've been trying to learn how to incorporate some of the expressions into my characters' faces. I've finally learned how to draw an upward-angle facial shot (possibly the most prominent of the obscure facial angles in DBZ - you know, it's the one where you can see the undersides of their nose and chin), so I'm getting there!

That certainly is one of the hardest angles to draw the face, but when you get used to it it's ok, the best thing to do is copy some faces in that angle and eventually when you can draw it off the top o'yer head you caould drawn any character like that.

I also appreciate that you like my fan manga.
I think one of the hardest angles to draw is not the side view, but the view where you can see the back of the hair and only a bit of the eye nose and mouth and they are standing backwards, it's quite difficult to do it and make it look good.

Great Saiyaman:

Yeah... I kept having to pause my DVD player because I had forgotten that you can turn off the screen-saver :) So it kept popping up and, not being finished with the drawing, I'd have to go back and pause it on just the right frame:D
Like I said, it was the anime version of the shot I took my lead from, because the Manga doesn't have Gohan bending so far backwards and whatnot. Interesting how that image you provided was flopped... I smell scanslation! :D Though the Japanese (even the "Uoaaaa!!!!!") was left intact...

Bejiita:

Yeah, that "from-the-back" angle has always been a bad one, but I think the one that gives me the most trouble is looking STRAIGHT UP at a character (as though from the ground). Having to increase the size of the arms and the legs and torso as they come further down... I can never figure it out.

Yeah, I don't have a Scanner or else I would have posted from VIZ. But I agree with you on the Anime Vs.Manga Gohan Back Arch, it looks better in the Anime, more arched. The Manga has it good to but it's clear you were basing your image on the Anime. Once again, good job.

Masako Nozawa has the greatest scream I've heard on Anime, Ever.

Excellent work! That looks almost excactly like the anime shot you were aiming for. Also, your stuff is good too Bejiita. We seem to have some good drawers around here. I wish I could draw like that. (Actually, sometimes I'm can do okay but, I assure you guys, none of the stuff I draw is as good as this.)
Best. Slip 'n' slide. EVER!
