Movie 12

Post by SuperFusion » Thu Dec 22, 2005 11:13 am

I was just wondering about the swears in this movie.. Does Pikkon ACTUALLY swear or is he just saying really mean stuff? I ask because I heard the swearing in the Japanese version of DBZ isn't that bad but from the crappy sub I watched, Pikkon was goin' all-out. :o

EDIT: wtf? There's a name translator on here? Went from Pik.kon to Paikuhan.

Its because one is his dub name and the other is his real name. Yeah in the sub I have Paikuhan swears at the bariers to free Enma. I have no idea how it will be handled in the dub.

Most likely he'll say "damned stupid idiot," and variations thereof, over and over again.

No, no. I'm asking if, in the Japanese version, Pikkon swears heavily? And if he does, what does he say?

This sounds like an excuse for me to watch my C-quality sub! :P

EDIT: And no, not heavily.

As I guessed, nothing more than a bunch of "blockhead," "stupid idiot," "moron," etc. One "bastard," but that's typical for Dragonball uuber-profanity. My guess is the dub will have a "bastard" and a "dumbass" thrown in at most.

On my copy, Pikuhan say's "Enma, you old shit" when Enma tells him to quit slacking off, and it has some more "heavy swearing" in it.

That's because it's likely done by AnimeLabs.
Jerseymilk: "Can I tell you something?"
B-kun: "What?"
Jerseymilk: "I see Fangirls."

The fansub I saw in high school had him, at one point, saying "Fuckalottapuss!" But then again, that's from the same people that brought you Gotenks' "Rapid Fuck You Fuck You Missile!"

I have the same copy, and yeah, that's all Pikkon says.

Hmmm I have this movie, but's it's not subtitled ... I think I have a crappy fansub somewhere.

By the way, what's the worse cuss word you've heard in Dragonball? And I mean actual Japanese dialogue. I've only seen bastard and damn from the FUNimation subs, that's the worse I've ever seen it, and they're suppose to be pretty accurate.

Funimations Subs are done by Steven J. Simmons, who also happens to be the member here known as "Daimao".

So why don't you ask him about the integrity of the Subbing on Funimations DVD's?

Steve "Daimao" Simmons has evidently translated the entire DBZ series, the GT series, and all the movies and tv specials for FUNi. However, it'd seem that Clyde Mandelin handled the original DB series following the "Tournament Saga", and he branched off from a couple of Daimao's translations ("artificial human" became "cyborg"). I'm curious if Clyde and Daimao are the sole translators for FUNi, those guys gotta have their hands filled with unsubbed anime.

The only reliable subs I have are of the movies and TV specials (with the exception of DB movie 1). The worst I've ever heard was "bastard," until this scene in movie 12 where a "dumbass" was thrown in. All my fansubs worth watching use S.Baldric's work, so I know it's very reliable. Since "dumbass" was never used in any of his other movies, IIRC, then I guess it was the choice swear word for the "Oh my God Paikuhan's SWEARING!"

I wouldn't be surprised if Daimao translates them the same way. It's a children's show you know, so most likely it's more of a name calling thing then a swearing thing. It's just we associate swearing with the worst name calling over here.

Don't forget Budokai 1-3, as well as Budokai Tenkaichi/Sparking!

Good point, I guess if anyone would be perfect for the job, it'd be Mr. Simmons. You'd think the PAL Budokai 1 would have used his translation for their release, instead they recieved "Aunt Sallies" and other weird grammer lines in their cut-scenes. It's cool to know that Budokai Tenkaichi stays very accurate in the Z Battle Gate cut-scenes for the dub audio track, considering the subtitles system is straight forward dub-titles for the Japanese track. I don't really mind it, the subtitles are still very accurate and we even get a couple "Hells" in the translation, or HFIL in some circles. :P
