Re: FUNimation DBZ TV Blu-ray Official On-Going Thread
I'm not 100% convinced this is purely a money issue.
Remastering technology has come a long way, but it's still ludicrously 'people intensive' in a way that you just can't short cut.
With the mass of titles Funi will have to play catch up on soon (and is likely in the midst of working on) it may be a decision more along the following lines...
"Need these people to work on new shows to get them out quicker while they are still NEW shows"
"And in that time either Toei will do something that we can get in on, or BD player's will gain a greater marketshare and then we can start up doing this again, potentially reaching a wider audience on day 1 of release of new sets."
I have no specific evidence of any of this mind you. It's just my guess based on my knowledge of how these things often work.

Re: FUNimation DBZ TV Blu-ray Official On-Going Thread
So between the Blu-Rays being currently suspended and not even half finished and the Dragon Box sets no longer in production does that mean we're back to the orange bricks as our defualt, easy to obtain. complete 1-291 DBZ release? Cuz' that would be pretty funny.

Re: FUNimation DBZ TV Blu-ray Official On-Going Thread
For most FUNi updates it's generally available via it's own webpage, this is the only announcement I can't seem to find directly.
Well, hope amazon and others pull their listings down so there's no confusion.

I think a cheap re-release of the DBOX in thin-packs would even be appreciated at this point. When it comes down to it, even without the fancy packaging and nice book, I'd hate to direct people to the Orange Bricks...
I think I'll be buying assorted Dragon Ball things for the rest of my life.

And so a resounding "meh" shook the Dragon Ball fandom once again.
Re: FUNimation DBZ TV Blu-ray Official On-Going Thread
Do you think that FUNimation will start to do the blu ray for the original Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball GT?

Re: FUNimation DBZ TV Blu-ray Official On-Going Thread
I would assume no, Z is their big seller so if they're not doing 'x' with Z you can safely bank on the rest of the franchise not getting 'x' either. Which is a shame because I've lost all interest in Z but was really banking on a replacement for the zoomed in blue bricks. Now I'm not certain if I should try to nab those 2 disc sets.akiaki wrote:Do you think that FUNimation will start to do the blu ray for the original Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball GT?
Re: FUNimation DBZ TV Blu-ray Official On-Going Thread
I don't know if this has been done with anime or not, or if Funi has a manufacture on demand program like the Warner Archive, but I think their most economical move would be to sell the Dragon Box discs MOD on DVD-R for $15-$20/disc, with occasional sales bringing them to around $10/disc.ssgOverlord wrote:I think a cheap re-release of the DBOX in thin-packs would even be appreciated at this point. Anime singles outside of films don't sell anymore.kidglov3s wrote:I don't know if this has been done with anime or not, or if Funi has a manufacture on demand program like the Warner Archive, but I think their most economical move would be to sell the Dragon Box discs MOD on DVD-R for $15-$20/disc, with occasional sales bringing them to around $10/disc.
And as for the MOD system, Warner can get away with that because they have a large degree of content that they own, but feel might not work well for a retail release, but is still worth producing one by one.
MOD generally wouldn't work for anime because since they have to license all of it, they have to hit numbers to make it worth the effort.
The issue with doing the DBox as singles in stores, or any such format (ignoring that I just said that wouldn't work) is that even if they were doing it for 15 to 20 dollars a disk, that's 15 to 20 for 6 episodes.... sitting next to the big 30 episode orange bricks for 20 to 30 depending on the store. Outside of hardcore fans looking for the DBox, people are going to go with the orange bricks in general.

I guess that was the market I had in mind. The people paying $200 for Dragon Box 2 (or who really want 1, 2 or 4 but balk at paying $100+ for them), and Funimation trying to get some of that business. I guess ideally working on the assumption that MOD would be apt to serve whatever demand there is and not at too much risk for overestimating it.MarcFBR wrote:Anime singles outside of films don't sell anymore.kidglov3s wrote:I don't know if this has been done with anime or not, or if Funi has a manufacture on demand program like the Warner Archive, but I think their most economical move would be to sell the Dragon Box discs MOD on DVD-R for $15-$20/disc, with occasional sales bringing them to around $10/disc.

Damn you FUNmation. You still owe the dub fans there complete collection.
Something is going on, first with the Kai season one mess, part 7 taking long to come out and now this.

There really isn't a 'market' in that sense. That is an extremely small group that honestly, I'd be shocked if they had a means of measuring it.kidglov3s wrote:I guess that was the market I had in mind. Only thing I could really imagine them doing would be them doing a slightly cheaper reprinting in more normal packaging, or them just reprinting again as they were before. If that, and I'm not sure that'd be worth the effort for them.

Re: FUNimation DBZ TV Blu-ray Official On-Going Thread
I think it depends. Perhaps they would reprint Dragon Boxes if they stopped they Blu rays due to budget/ technology issues (like they said). If they canceled the Blurays because they did not get the response they were hoping/expected then I can see them not reprinting Dragon Boxes.MarcFBR wrote:There really isn't a 'market' in that sense. Funimation, I hate you! Should have included the U.S broadcast in the DBOXes instead of the 5.1 to please the three major fanbases in one shot. The Japanese fans, original broadcast dub fans, and fans of both.

Re: FUNimation DBZ TV Blu-ray Official On-Going Thread
Let's hope that this doesn't end up being canceled. But if it does

Has anyone emailed Funimation and asked them anything about what's going on? which most of us here already know what's probably going to happen. But Funimation needs to put on their website ''Hey consumers! We're not sure if we're going to finish these Level sets so buy them at your own risk'' That's obviously a joke, but I know there will be fans who buys these and will be unaware of what's going on.
There will be some kid in walmart. start bawling his eyes out and snorting around for the Blu-rays. ''I want the Blu-rays'' So his parents will buy them just to shut him up. and the kid's dad is an alcoholic anyway, he can't take much. So the kid comes home and tells his friends ''I got dbz on Blu-ray & you don't haha'' then they tell him that they might get canceled. So the kid starts crying and hollering at his mom to buy him the Dragon-Boxes. and she says ''Ask your dad'' and the dad says ''ask your mom'' back and forth now we got a big mess here on Daizenshuu EX ugh...Thanks Funimation

The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

Well...that's surprising. And kinda underwhelming. I imagine this might piss off a lot of dub fans, though, and with good reason.
However, while I look at my Dragon Boxes on my shelf, I think...maybe they can focus on completing THAT collection now...?

As mentioned, I think we're speculating on speculation at this point.
Not to add flame to the fire, but, one scenario -- which is simple and would make sense -- would be that Funi got word that Toei is or will be doing their own remaster now. So they're stopping to go ahead and wait for that. Why waste the manpower?
