Re: FUNimation DBZ TV Blu-ray Official On-Going Thread
A little late to the news but this is seriously the most disappointing Dragon Ball news in a long time. These Blu Rays were the absolute best the series ever looked, and probably ever will since Toei is unlikely to ever do it themselves. I would gladly pay more for these of FUNi were going to up the price, especially since Dragon Box 2 is never going to be found at a decent price anymore.

Re: FUNimation DBZ TV Blu-ray Official On-Going Thread
The orange bricks that were remastered in 1080p HD probably look better than the final version on DVD, so FUNimation might give a chance at working with what they've already got and change it up a bit then release on Blu-ray, part of the Dragon Ball Z Level sets.
They're looking for a cheaper solution so there's not much hope the new Level 2.1 2.2 3.1 3.2 4.1... will look as good as the first ones did. I.e, if they don't end up cancelling completely.

FUNimation 2015 Releases I want:
- Kai 2.0 on Blu-ray
- Kai 2.0 on Blu-ray
Re: FUNimation DBZ TV Blu-ray Official On-Going Thread
Who knows! Maybe they'll end up upscaling the footage. Personally, I wouldn't mind an upscaled Dragon Box (I wish!). But at the same time I'm conflicted with upscaled material in general. FUNi did this with many anime titles with mixed results.

I read one of the Anime News Network Kai reviews saying that their Kai Blus are upscaled; isn't that their normal practice? Why release them on Blu-Ray at all?Krycek7o2 wrote:Who knows! The Kai Blu's aren't upscaled; Kai was scanned in at HD, then Q-Tec used DVNR to smooth out the picture. It was color corrected, and then mastered at 1080p 4x3. This is what Funimation used.
My favorite movie henchman is Sancho.

I don't know about Kai being SD. I remember reading it was scanned in high definition.BlazingFiddlesticks wrote:I read one of the Anime News Network Kai reviews saying that their Kai Blus are upscaled; isn't that their normal practice? As for upscales of Anime on BD. In some aspects its nice to receive the lossless 2.0 or 5.1 audio tracks. And there's no pixelation, but it also depends on how the show was upscaled. The most infamous upscale is FLCL master from Japan. This version introduced all sorts of weird video anomalies.
Re: FUNimation DBZ TV Blu-ray Official On-Going Thread
When FUNi eventually decides what they want to do as far as the remastering process, do you think they'll start over again from the beginning, or just pick up where they left off?

Re: FUNimation DBZ TV Blu-ray Official On-Going Thread
If done right, anime upscales look great. No pixelation, better quality, a little better color. Samurai Champloo v2 is very good.
With DB Kai, we dodged a bullet. It could've easily looked like this:
01 R1DVD | BD
02 R1DVD | BD
03 R1DVD | BD
04 R1DVD | BD
05 R1DVD | BD
06 R1DVD | BD
07 R1DVD | BD
08 R1DVD | BD
09 R1DVD | BD
10 R1DVD | BD
11 R1DVD | BD
It's amazing how much it looks like certain terrible DBZ Youtube videos.

Actually, if you believe it, FLCL is some of Q-Tec's 'better' work. Their worst by far is Blue Submarine no. 6, which is essentially warpsharp gone mad.Krycek7o2 wrote:As for upscales of Anime on BD. Whoa, those do looks odd. They actually hurt my eyes! I always though FLCL was bad, but this takes the cake, by a long shot.Ashura wrote:If done right, anime upscales look great. No pixelation, better quality, a little better color. Samurai Champloo v2 is very good.

The filtering is so bad. I never really watched Blue Submarine, but was the show always meant to look like a flash animation video?
Re: FUNimation DBZ TV Blu-ray Official On-Going Thread
I agree with whoever said this is the best DBZ has looked in a long time. That time being until Bluray (not counting Kai of course). Sorry to all you Dragon Box fans but those look nowhere near as good compared to Level 1.1/1.2 on Bluray but of course the reason being is upscaled DVD's will never look as good on a huge HDTV.
Its good to note that sales had nothing to do with it but the cost to continue to do it would make the sale price probably ridiculous (I'm guessing $50 - $60). Also at the rate that they were going it would have taken a few years for the full release...again.
I just find it funny and rather sad that FUNi would hype it up, release it with this quality then do a 180 and cancel it in favor for more economical aspect when DB is their flagship and last time they did this... oh god no.

Re: FUNimation DBZ TV Blu-ray Official On-Going Thread
A little off topic. The BDs are on holded because of the process being to much of a challenge but what was the purpose for funimation to cancel the UUE?

BDs are cancelled... for now.Gotham22 wrote:A little off topic. The BDs are on holded because of the process being to much of a challenge but what was the purpose for funimation to cancel the UUE?
The UUEs were cancelled because singles were on the way out at the time, and Funi decided to jump the gun to sell them in a release style that would better serve both the consumer, in both price point and ease of purchasing, and them in their ability to get them in stores and make a profit (by release style I'm purely talking about the style of release, not the content of the remastering.)

Re: FUNimation DBZ TV Blu-ray Official On-Going Thread
You can say cancelled if you want, but they're just supended. Put on hold for now.
The UUE were cancelled because funimation wanted do something different.

Have you read the press release?Gotham22 wrote:You can say cancelled if you want, but they're just supended. Put on hold for now.
Cancelling releases, saying 'we arent doing this, but we will keep an eye for the future' is saying they are cancelled.

Are you aware suspend/ed/ing doesn't ALWAYS mean 'temporarily', it can mean "we are done."Gotham22 wrote:it saids supended.MarcFBR wrote:Have you read the press release?Gotham22 wrote:You can say cancelled if you want, but they're just supended. Put on hold for now.

As an example, people don't generally 'cancel' their run for the presidency, they 'suspend' it. Still means they are out.

Not to mention it's rather unlikely the 'Level' moniker will ever be used again.

But you still don't know. You're reading missleading titles from rightstuf, etc.MarcFBR wrote: Are you aware suspend/ed/ing doesn't ALWAYS mean 'temporarily', it can mean "we are done."
