FUNimation imported Kai in 1080p HD from Japan, the 1080p HD footage was already done for them, so all FUNi had to do was downscale to 720x480 (DVD) and 1440x1080p (Blu-ray).

If FUNimation were to release Dragon Box TM on Blu-ray, it'd be upscaled. HDTV's and BDP's can both do it.

PS3's really good with upscaling, Xbox 360 too.

No, it's not stupid to say that because with the materials FUNimation has it would essentially be true. It costs more to author a Blu-ray disc than it does a DVD so in the case of FUNimation receiving standard def. masters for the Dragon Box material, it wouldn't be worth the cost to put it out on Blu-ray. If they could get their hands on Dragon Box quality film masters, then Blu-ray all the way but I think it's all but assured any further Dragon Box release will be on DVD.

Well I'd be happy either way :)

Upscales are not worth it, honestly.

I hope you understand that professionally upscaled material looks a lot better than simple upscalling by Blu-ray players.

If done correctly, I disagree completely. I'd rather take a proper upscale with no pixilation and hi-res audio over the DVD Counterpart.

has anyone got an up-scaled dragonball image? I'd just like to see it out of curiosity.

Since you asked... This is my desktop background. The scaling method was the default for GIMP.

There is some material that is digital and will only ever be upscaled. Stuff like Samurai Champloo (second version), for instance, looks way better on Blu just because you don't have all of that macroblocking going on.

DB shouldn't need to be upscaled, though, and any Blu-Ray they put out should be from film elements and not digibetas. It would be a waste if they used SD masters for Blu on anything Dragon Ball that is film in nature.

The thing about Dragon Box masters is that what Funimation has is going to be standard definition and digital. To get something Dragon Box quality, you pretty much have to rely on Toei to go back to the film masters.

Yes, and that's exactly why you wouldn't want to upscale the Dragonbox masters... because they're only in SD.

Just to clarify, because I think there are mixed messages and opinions being tossed around (and I'm mainly talking about the movies, here)...

The main reason we "wouldn't want" Dragon Box masters from FUNimation upscaled is because, as has been noted, the masters FUNimation likely received from Toei are digital at 480p -- but that's not the issue. The issue is that Toei has film prints of the series (they created "Dragon Box: The Movies" from pretty fantastic 35mm prints).

Therefore, why upscale something when there's a film master to go back to for the full resolution?

(And of course, we already have a product like that -- FUNimation's "Double Features" were released on DVD and Blu-ray, and were created from real film prints... of course, the biggest issue there is that Toei's masters are worlds nicer, especially in the audio department, than what FUNimation has.)

For things that ONLY exist as SD productions (mainly digitally-produced things from the early 2000s, like "FLCL"), yes, professionally-handled, in-house upscales are going to be better than what your consumer-grade receiver and TV are going to be capable of producing, and you get the added benefit of lossless audio.

Yeah... er, you did read my post right before the last one where I mentioned all the oldest DB stuff (not including Yo! Son Goku and his Friend Return, etc.) is film based, right? That's exactly what I was saying.

I guess I should've phrased it like this: 'Yeah, that's the reason why we wouldn't want a Blu-Ray of the Dragon Box masters... because you'd have to upscale them.' I actually meant to say 'use' instead of 'upscale' in my original post.

Pretty much what I meant was... if anything old-school Dragonball goes to Blu-Ray, it should just be telecined from the film masters in high definition. While upscaling the Dragon Box stuff would look decent (and be superior to the DVDs), it's not the best representation of the series on BD considering much better materials exist.

Lesson learned: don't start posting on Daizex right after you wake up. :)

I actually thought they would pass on releasing any other Dragon Boxes. But then they went ahead and asked for our input on more...

Voted movies. FUNi have the masters anyway, wasn't really expecting DB or GT boxes anyway.

Oh man, if something comes of this and they finally release the movie boxes (that they licensed), then I'm gonna be so happy! I'm definitely gonna fill out this survey.

Eh, they only seem to have the DBZ films not the DB films.

"Dragon Box Z: The Movies Z" than "Dragon Box: The Movies"

Dragon Ball > Dragon Box GT > Dragon Box TM
