Scenes you imagined differently

Post by violadude » Fri Mar 02, 2012 8:53 pm

What are some scenes from dragon ball that you read about before you saw or read in the manga and you imagined them a lot differently than they actually happened?

One for me was when I read about Super Buu turning Chi-chi into an egg, I thought it would be a giant Chi-chi sized egg and Buu was somehow huge and stomped on her. For some reason I also imagined it taking place at their house at Mount Paouzu rather than at Kami's Palace.

An odd one for me was when I was first told about the Cell Game by a friend. I imagined it taking place in some kind of giant, semi-indoor colosseum, with stone pillars and arches. Where on Earth did I get such an idea?

^haha for some reason I used to think the cell games were actually just some weird spin off to the series in a video game or something.

Back when I first saw those short grainy gifs of Babidi enslaving Vegeta, I assumed it was happening on Kami's palace.

Back when I first played GT Final Bout I tried to make sense of why Freeza looked so different than he did on Cartoon Network. I figured "Oh, he took all of that armor off." I wasn't even aware of these "transformations" at that time.

The very first knowledge of GT I ever learned was that it was about everyone being older and going on a giant outer-space DB hunt, so I assumed it would be most of the cast of Z traveling through outer space in a huge ship about the size of the one Freeza comes to Earth in. I also had no idea they were going to change Goku into a little kid, so I thought he'd be an adult like the rest of the group.

I was disappointed when I found out otherwise.

Well it's not a scene but my friend had one of those "super ultra rare japanese figures" of who he told me was Goku as a Prime Saiyan, or Super Saiyan 4.
It happened in elementary school when DBZ was on, I want to say late Frieza or Garlic Jr. saga, way before GT was in America.
Turned out to be Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta.
Oh, and his tail was missing on the toy.
That's something else to add too.

I've got... a lot. Most of this was when I was in primary school and it was airing on Cheese TV:

During the Namek saga, around the time they showed Freeza's third form, I saw an advertisement for some action figures that had Freeza's final form. Not knowing that at the time, I assumed it was his weakest form that hadn't been shown on-screen.

I also received a lot of inaccurate information about the Boo saga before it aired - I was told that it was set when Gohan was 26 years old, with a son named Goten who was born a Super Saiyan. And I had a small, potaraless figure of Super Vegetto I was told was Boo-saga Gohan.
I'm re-watching Dragon Ball GT in full on my blog. Check it out if you're interested in my thoughts on the series as I watch through it!

I remember reading a summary for movie 10. And when I read the part concerning Trunks "mooning" Broli and due to my lack of English knowledge compared to nowadays, I thought Trunks made a "moon" out of his butt and that caused Broli to transform to a giant monkey!

Due to Budoukai 2's story mode, I believed that Raditz originally came to Earth with Nappa.

And this might not necessarily be exactly what you're looking for, but before I read the manga, I thought that Piccolo vs. Freeza played out pretty much just as long as it was in the anime. I was quite surprised at how short it was.

When I saw the promos for the Majin Buu Saga on Toonami where Goku was shown to reach a third level in Super Saiya-jin, I thought he became one of a god-like tier where his uncontrollable power further became his severe undoing.

Goku didn't die in GT. The show sucked him off so much, it was impossible to keep him in the world of the living, so he ascended beyond mortality.

I always side eye the people who say "Now my kids/today's kids can experience what I did as a child!" Nigga, who gives a fuck about your childhood? You're an adult now and it was at least 15 years ago. Let the kids have their own experience instead of picking at a corpse.

That reminds me... waaaay back when I knew absolutely nothing about DBZ (and in fact hadn't even watched more than one episode... one of the "Goku training on King Kai's planet while everyone on Earth waits for him to show up" ones if I remember right), I heard bits and pieces about the Androids/Cell storyline.

Somehow, I got the idea that #17 and #18 were both female, and that the Cell Games took place in Dr. Gero's lab (which, in my mind, was a lot bigger and less... stuck in the side of a mountain than it ended up actually being) and were some sort of Olympic-type athletic competition.

And suddenly, a better plot idea than movie 11 surfaces.

I don't have any idea what made me think this, but when I was first being told about the series later in, before I could get online to research myself (on the good ol' Planet Namek website of old), I was under the impression that Majin Boo was another one of Gero's creations. So I thought pretty much the entire last half of Z was all about this guy's vengeance.

The first episode of DBZ I watched was the one with Gohan meeting that old robot during his training. I thought Gohan was (Grandpa) Gohan as a child and this was taking place in the past, before DB.

I also thought Tullece was Goku's second brother before watching the film.

I thought that #17 was female too. Just because of the long hair and the fact that, in certain shots, he did look quite feminine.

I thought Freeza was a woman, which was before I saw his second, third and 100% form. It was Funimation's fault.

Same here. My first real exposure to DB was Ultimate Battle 22, which only depicted his true form.

I remember on the same game playing as Kid Buu... when it came round to it being released on TV in the UK I thought they changed it to a Fat Buu. I wasn't happy until I saw he could transform :P

I imagined Super Saiyan 3 being something that came on more suddenly, not something that Goku had up his sleeve already.

I imagined the fight between Goku and Freeza/Cell in GT to be..... much cooler.

1. When I knew nothing about DBZ and just saw pictures of it, I thought SSJ Goku and black hair Goku were different people and was confused who the main character was.

2. I thought Goku could transform into a SSJ any time he wanted, so during the Vegeta fight I thought he would transform and I was waiting. There was this part where Goku is powering up and goes multi-coloured for a second and I thought that was the start of his transformation. :p

3. I saw a picture of Satan and thought it was Nappa with hair.

4. I saw a picture of fat Boo and thought it was some kind of super Dodoria.

As far as I'm concerned, I block that fight out of my head. It never happened. :( It was such an insult to every DBZ fan. I mean seeing that happen made the whole Cell and Boo arcs seem so pointless.
