What are these marks on my DVD?

Post by jukteen » Fri Mar 09, 2012 10:52 pm

I was wondering if anyone else have these wierd marks on their DVDs? 2 of the dvds from my dragon box has these wierd smudge/line marks, they're not really scratches.. I don't really know how to explain it, but here it is..

Line:

Smudges:

I tested them out and they both played fine, however it was a quick skim I didn't sit there through the whole 3 hours to see if there was any problem, should I be worried about those marks? What the heck are they?

I am not sure what it is. But, a good way to check is to copy the DVD with DVD shrink. It runs through the whole DVD and if there is a problem the prosses will either freeze or stop.

Cool thanks, how long does the process take? I'm thinking about checking all my DVDs while I'm at it just to be safe. Also, does this program put a lot of stress on the DVD? I've never copied a DVD before lol

It is the way the DVD is copied. I think it has to do with copy-protection.
My favourite art style (and animation) outside Toriyama who worked on Dragon Ball: Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, Masaki Satō, Minoru Maeda, Takeo Ide, Hisashi Eguchi, Katsumi Aoshima, Tomekichi Takeuchi, Masahiro Shimanuki, Kazuya Hisada

My DVDs are real they're not copied.

Attitudefan isn't saying you don't have real DVDs. He's saying that they're probably created during the production process when they burn/copy the DVD.

Yeah, that's correct. Ordinary DVD's are burned from the inner edges to the outer in a circle but Dragonball DVD's are not produced that way as it seems.

People really need to stop recommending DVDShrink. Its outdated and it won't be cracking the protection methods for the Dragon Box DVDs.
You'll be getting all sorts of errors as DVDShrink locks up.
Your best bet to rip these discs is DVDFab 8 Qt. The free version of DVDFab works wonderfully for the FUNimation Dragon Box discs.

Using AnyDVD is also a plus, but expensive if legally obtained.

As for the problems at hand, I suggest ripping the DVD. If it passes, it works. But, I wouldn't worry. Most of the discs I own from FUNimation have these sorts of "errors" and the movies rip and play fine. As long as the label is not damaged, you're alright.

All my other Dragon Ball discs aren't like that though.. it was just these 2.

Could you recommend me a good program to check the discs for any errors I really don't wanna have to sit there and watch the whole thing especially since I'm not caught up to that chapter yet.

Download DVDFab 8 Qt. You can rip it in either ISO or VOB format. This is a free and legal app.
I use this when I rip subtitles from my Season sets. AnyDVD or DVD Decrypter (very old now, but still good on the R2 Dragon Box discs) always crap out with the season sets.
If it rips, there shouldn't be a problem, unless the cosmetic condition is a problem. Though to be honest, now that I looked at the pictures better, this isn't the same thing my FUNi DVDs are plagued with. Either way, test it.

One more thing, there is no damage to the label side, correct?

Ok thanks I'm going to do that now. I have no idea what ISO/VOB format is, which is faster? I just want to go with the quickest option, I don't plan on using the rips anyways I'm going to delete them afterwards.

VOB is faster, no need to create an ISO image. In case you missed it; there is no damage to the label side of the DVD? Right? Because if there is, then we have a problem.

Well, all my DBZ DVD's have those weird 'milky' marks.

Then there should be no problem with general playback. It's probably a minor surface blemish when the disc was being produced.
