So they probably weren't present at the former tournaments and everyone seemed to have instantly believed that the Z-Warriors were just using a bunch of tricks at the Cell Games and Mr. Satan was the real one who killed Cell, so why would Spopovich and Yamu be any different? It's a good point, though.
But Bobbodi doesn't mention anything about the Z-Warriors, since when he's surprised at how much energy they gathered, he thinks that they'd tapped hundreds of humans. And Dabra said there was no-one on Earth like them when he had an underling check 300 years ago. They also don't seem to know who the hell they are, believing them to be Earthlings and are constantly shocked by their strengths.
Again, we don't know when Bobbodi possessed them (to me, it seemed to be that it was fairly recently). Like I said, as far as we know, Spopovich had only entered in the 24th Tenkaichi Budoukai, where the Z-Warriors weren't present and Mr. Satan, believed to be the strongest in the universe (since the population's IQ apparently all took a massive drop and they forgot about everything prior to the Cell arc).
I think it's merely a plothole. That line had always confused me.
They wouldn't need to be present at previous tournaments, to do research on them. Videl did so to find out about Goku and confronted Gohan about it IIRC. Also I believe Videl recognized Gohan as the kid from the Cell games, and deduced that he was the one to have beaten Cell. So I don't see why Spopovich and Yamu could not have done the same thing.
In that context their statements would be plausible, since they would have some knowledge that people like Gohan existed. Considering that in the second statement that he outright says it's him, suggests that they may have watching the Cell games recognized Gohan when he went SSJ2 (since he was blonde haired during the part that was televised).
Maybe they suspected the black haired Gohan was the guy, but had no power reading to confirm. When he powered up and his hair turned blonde, it confirmed their suspicions.
Also as I pointed out on my previous post, Bobodi not knowing about strong warriors like Goku and everyone else is the whole point, if Spopovich and Yamu were planning on surprising / win favor with him by getting the energy ahead of schedule, by tapping them instead of going after hundreds of humans. It would be kinda hard to fool Babodi if he was already aware of stronger beings don't you think??
