DBZ Vs DBKai - The Fights

Post by DBZGTKOSDH » Fri Apr 27, 2012 9:53 am

So which version do you prefer when you watch the fights, the Z or the Kai? I guess everyone will answer Kai for Freeza Vs Goku, but what about the rest of the fights? Give your reasons.
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

As for fights, I prefer Z even in the Freeza arc because I don't like missing filler fights that are animated nicely. Of course, Z sucks so badly story-wise, but I rather enjoy the fights animation-wise.

Gohan and Krillin vs Ginyu, that fight dragged out for so long in Z that it used the same animation a few times but in different order, Kai did good by cutting out the recycled shots and more.

Across the board I prefer the Kai fights. Keep that shit moving, I say. I enjoyed the Z stuff when I was a kid, but the pacing was horrendous. Every couple of minutes there was some scene that didn't need to be there. A good example is the Vegeta vs. Goku fight during the Saiyan saga at the beginning. I watched the Kai fight and it stuck to the fight the whole way through. Ended up ending in 4 or so episodes = very good when considering it was all about the fight. I then rewatched the fight as it was original and it got stretched out so badly because of stupid scenes involving the friends just babbling on about the fight. For instance, the beam struggle, which was awesome and could have been a few seconds longer in Kai. In the original, it gets padded with another scene in the middle of it. We don't need to know how others are reacting to it - get it out there and finish it clean.

You got your Kamehameha, you got your Galick Gun, you get a beam struggle, boom, Goku goes X4 and gives Vegeta a beam ride to the stratosphere.

Freeza fight = Kai = /end

Thankfully, the 2 android fights were sped along, and I never got to see the entire Cell saga in Z, so Kai was more or less my introduction to everything after Imperfect Cell. It takes a lot of episodes to get through, but it doesn't seem to drag, I guess. For sure, they cut what they could cut and kept all other scenes related to the plot, so I can't really complain. Went back to check a couple fights and they definitely could have used trimming in Z. Not too much to say, really.

Now for the Boo stuff, most definitely, they needed to cut stuff. I'm mentioning it in this thread because I made my own cut to the Boo arc, and it's way better pacing and fighting when cutting these things down. So many unnecessary scenes and little things that didn't have a purpose or just padded episodes. I don't think I'll ever watch the original ever again, but I would much prefer a cleaner presentation with it being Kai'd, rather than seeing my amateur-cut version.

All mostly Kai, just for Boo it's Z (there's no Boo Kai).

Fast paced, straight and doesn't last too long like in Z.

Majin Boo's Z arc with all of its stupidity is a comical arc and kind of an official parody to me (the last arc did stuff the others wouldn't take seriously).

Z for the Buu Saga
Kai for everything else

Gotta hand it to Kai, it has worth and that being the battles noticably less taxing and for the Frieza Saga itself, they really needed to cut that down.

Goku didn't die in GT. The show sucked him off so much, it was impossible to keep him in the world of the living, so he ascended beyond mortality.

I always side eye the people who say "Now my kids/today's kids can experience what I did as a child!" Nigga, who gives a fuck about your childhood? You're an adult now and it was at least 15 years ago. Let the kids have their own experience instead of picking at a corpse.

I think I liked the Saiyan fights a lot better in Z. I gotta re watch it to compare, but I feel like they cut out a lot of action there.

Gonna have to go with Kai although I felt the beam struggle between Vegeta and Goku was slightly too short for my tastes.

That's precisely why ordinary men pursue the concept of perfection, it's infatuation. If something is truly perfect, that's IT! The bottom line becomes there is no room for imagination! No space for intelligence or ability or improvement! Do you understand? To men of science like us, perfection is a dead end, a condition of hopelessness. Always strive to be better than anything that came before you but not perfect! Scientist's agonize over the attempt to achieve perfection! That's the kind of creatures we are! We take joy in trying to exceed our grasp, in trying to reach for something that in the end, we have to admit may in fact be unreachable!"
