So what's next for Funimation?

Post by samuraix123 » Wed May 09, 2012 12:02 am

In your opinion, what do you think Funimation will try and release next?
1.)Dragon-box: The Movies?
2.)Dragonball Dragon-box?
3.)Dragonball GT Dragon-box?
or will they try to revive the Blu-ray releases with a different remastering?
I'm hoping for number 2. :)
The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

Wait, there is a Dragon-box thing for Dragon Ball?

What are the benefits of it? If it's something substantial, I'd be all over it.

I'm hoping for number one. Personally I've only seen some of the movies via Double Feature, and those releases were definitely not to my liking in the video and audio departments.
So mondo lame.

Well, to be honest. DBZ was the one that needed a Dragon Box release here most of all. The benefit of a DB Dragon Box is that you would get the next episode previews and it wouldn't be as zoomed in as it was in the FUNimation blue bricks.

The picture quality for the Dragon Box is far far better. The blue bricks look pretty bad after ep13ish. I'm assuming Funi only did a new transfer for the first 13(?) episodes because they didn't have any existing uncut masters. The rest of the series is obviously based on ancient masters -- there's even rainbowing artifacts in some episodes. :(

I would really like to see the Dragon Ball Dragon Box. If they came out with that I would be drooling over it.

Well this is what the Japanese version looks like. If FUNimation releases one, I'm sure it'll emulate this look...

As much as I'd like to see Dragon Box releases for the original series and GT, I don't see Funimation releasing them anytime soon since Z tends to be the more popular series. I think they might release Dragon Box: The Movies since they did say they have the masters for at least the 13 Z movies so that's something right there.

Believe it or not, the coloring is a bit better on the Blue Bricks than the Dragon Box on some episodes.
And then there's all the weird glitches during the Red Ribbon arc, the top frame being seen on the bottom.
And I'm very anal when some episodes are progressive one moment and interlaced the next and back and forth.

But, I do agree, the remastering was well done.

And no, I didn't drool on it when I bought mine a few years ago!

Also, I believe I heard that there are a few super bright episodes as well, like how a couple of Boo-arc episodes on the Z boxes are ridiculously bright.

Remastered Sailor and the Seven Balls on DVD and Blu-Ray. Narrated by Sonny Strait.

Yes, there are some of those. I've worked my way up to episode 90 or so.
There's plenty of oddities here and there. The one that really bothers me is the progressive/interlace issues.

I know Z had some brightness and coloring issues. I really haven't seen anything major like that on the GT Set.
Though on Disc 5 of the GT set, when the series changes intro animations, half the animation is obviously not remastered and interlaced (and incredibly dark), but near the end the remastered footage kicks in.
It's kind of jarring.

I do prefer the colors of the blue bricks myself for the 13 remastered episodes -- but I'm assuming the Dragon Boxes are faithful to the film for better or worse.

The frame glitches -- is it similar to how from ep1, some scenes are actually too far zoomed out? You can see the vignetting on the bottom of the frames in some scenes. I'm only at disc 3 of the Dragon Boxes so I haven't gotten to the RR arc yet.

No, it's not like that. It's actually the top of the frame appearing in the bottom frame. I'm guessing this was an error when it was telecined or something.
I have to find the episodes, but I remember Kei17 posted about it a few months ago.

Somehow, I have a feeling that Funimation won't release anything of this sort, or at least not this (and maybe even next) year.

They did have a recent poll related to future DragonBox releases. I hope something comes of it maybe next year.

A Dragon Ball Dragon Box seems the most likely out of the three, since that's apparently when a new release for Dragon Ball is coming.
