Re: Kai vs Z
This argument is going nowhere. Dragon Ball is for whoever feels like watching..... first off. But it is AIMED FOR KIDS (9-14). I forgot where I heard that, but it had something to do with the Toonami block back in the day.

Re: Kai vs Z
Cool but back in the day all we had was the shitty funi dub for kids 8 and under, now the target group for merchandise is a lot wider, actually mostly aimed at adults who want to see it uncut with more mature dialogue, thus we have the new Kai funi dub which doesn't hold back like before.

Re: Kai vs Z
The DBZ Super Power Desk in Japan wasn't exactly targeted at and for, say, me at the office.

The desk is definitely not targeted at me, like most of the merchandise & most of the songs the anime has.
If it's from Toonami, it talks about the edited, dubbed series, which is irrelevant with the original manga.DarkPrince_92 wrote:it is AIMED FOR KIDS (9-14). I forgot where I heard that, but it had something to do with the Toonami block back in the day.

No, but I'd say 9-14 is probably what the original Manga WAS aimed at back in Japan.

Re: Kai vs Z
The manga being for 10+ seems OK to me, since it has violence not suitable for little kids, and Toriyama's humor isn't understandable sometimes for little kids, it's more adult humor. The anime (DB/Z/Kai) has songs that are more kid friendly, and GT seems to be more targeted to younger audience. The merchandise are for kids, because kids are the ones who would get out in the street with Dragon Ball accessories, ore use Dragon Ball merchandise, except if the teens/adults are very hardcore fans.

Re: Kai vs Z
Just to answer the thread's original question. The ONLY part of the show that I consider a God-send through Kai is the battle between Goku and Freeza. In Kai it's 11 episodes, compared to "Z's" 20. Now the majority of the fight is wonderful and I love how the tension is built through a true sense of hopelessness. However the post-SSJ transformation episodes are a steep drop in quality. It has nothing to do with the Manga or Toriyama's writing style. In fact, I love the "panic" they establish through Namek's destruction.
Other than that, I'd say "Z">Kai. The Saiyan arc's filler is fine. The episodes are very well paced (except for maybe 1-2 Gohan eps). The rest of Z has wonderful filler, especially during Cell/Buu where the show kept improving IMO.
PS- I do really love Kai with Yamamoto. Particularly the Cell arc's music. I hope to get it fully as it was originally aired one day.

Sorry, didn't make myself clear. I'm planning on synching the Blu Rays with the "DBZ Music Revival"'s excellent music transfers. I have all the needed technology. Also I did buy the official releases so it isn't really hurting the company. hehe.kei17 wrote:Almost? No, it's certainly impossible.DBZGTKOSDH wrote:After the scandal, it's almost impossible. Re: Kai vs Z
As for the argument, is DB for kids? Sure. However, the reason why it stands out is because so many adults can enjoy it. Try watching Ninja Turtles or Transformers from the 80s and it's nearly unwatchable. However, DB is still a great experience. True story: I have introduced the series (casually) to people aged 23, mid 20s (forget) and my wife who's 32 now but started watching at 29-30. They all adore the show. Honestly adore it. Very very few shows have this type of pull for adults.

Not sure about the Transformers, but that is certainly an insult to the classic Teenage Mutant Turtles of 1980, you can't be serious about saying it's unwatchable.Aoi wrote:Try watching Ninja Turtles or Transformers from the 80s and it's nearly unwatchable.

lol. I still think the movies are fun in a campy way. The show is tough though. Ok. Maybe not "unwatchable", but not very good.dbboxkaifan wrote:Not sure about the Transformers, but that is certainly an insult to the classic Teenage Mutant Turtles of 1980, you can't be serious about saying it's unwatchable.Aoi wrote:Try watching Ninja Turtles or Transformers from the 80s and it's nearly unwatchable.![]()

Yes, just as it's illegal to just give someone a movie via a torrent.Nex Carnifex wrote:Is it illegal to just give them to you?DBZGTKOSDH wrote:After the scandal, it's almost impossible. It's gone.Aoi wrote:I hope to get it fully as it was originally aired one day.

I've only got the first 4 blu-rays, so my opinion might change after I've seen the show with the replaced music. Mainly though, it comes down to whether Kai removed the hands down best filler scene the show ever did, which is during the Cell-Gohan Kamehameha battle, when Piccolo, Kuririn, Tenshinhan and Yamcha knowing it's hopeless and that they can't help, but do so anyway. I always get goosebumps at that point, and if Kai has cut it out I will curse... someone.

Re: Kai vs Z
I think it comes down to you can watch Dragon Ball z/kai like an adult show with an adult group that isn't necessarily nerdy unlike a lot of shonen, with the correct sub, even more-so than something like Death Note given DB is just more accessible. I think that's what makes it an adult show as much as a kids show since it succeeds at being both though not everyone would give it that chance. BLEACH fills the same category in Japan, yet here we broadcast it at midnight to a college demographic, if it dbz had originally received a more accurate dub and broadcasted uncut on Adult Swim like BLEACH then we'd probably be seeing it as another strange bloody anime with a great story instead of just a stupid kids show mocked by barbie commercials like it is now...

I'm about to get a friend of mine to watch the entire series. (He got me to watch Eva, I get him to watch this. DB is a lot more episodes, but it doesn't contain a scene where the main character has masturbated over a 14 year old girl in a coma who's breasts have popped out so, there's that. God damn you, Shinji.) Anyway, I was going to go DB, DB Kai, then back to DBZ for the Boo arc. The thing is, that's a really, really, REALLY long series, and I'm not sure we'd get all the way through it before one or both of us dies. Using Kai rather than regular DBZ is more of a time issue than anything else, since it's a lot easier to watch 100 episodes than 200. I'm trying to work out whether there are any other shortcuts I can take, such as watching the tenth anniversary special then jumping to Roshi's training, or if that loses too much.
