What is the Best Bromance in the series?

What is the Best Bromance in the series?

Post by DBZAOTA482 » Sat May 19, 2012 10:41 am

Which relationship of dudes bonding is the best in the series?

For me, first place goes to Goku x Gohan:

Althought a lot of people see him as a bad family man who can give two shits about his family and it's a granted that he has his noticable faults (being gone a lot of times, prioritizing fighting over them etc.) but I say fuck them, he did care, and him and Gohan did share a very strong bond. Out of all the father-son relationships, theirs was the strongest, much stronger than Vegeta x Trunks or Goku x Goten (heck in the manga, he didn't even care about Goten).

This video goes well for their relationship.

My second place has to be Gohan x Piccolo:

While the relationship did develop through a case of Stockholm Syndrome, it added an extra layer to Gohan's character (like his idolization of his father) and making him more relatable to the audience as every boy must have thought of having a monster friend at least once.

This video fits them well.

Goku didn't die in GT. The show sucked him off so much, it was impossible to keep him in the world of the living, so he ascended beyond mortality.

I always side eye the people who say "Now my kids/today's kids can experience what I did as a child!" Nigga, who gives a fuck about your childhood? You're an adult now and it was at least 15 years ago. Let the kids have their own experience instead of picking at a corpse.

I was thinking about this when watching the Return of Cooler fight with Goku and Vegeta. As much as Vegeta hates Goku and Goku dislikes Vegeta's attitude, there's a dude thing going on between them. A good cop / bad cop duo that makes the ordeals that much more interesting. Considering Vegeta's huge dislike of Goku for the majority of the series, though, it doesn't work as strong as the other ones I can think of.

Goku x Kuririn.

This is dudedom right here. From DB to the end of Z, these guys are best friends. One is an alien manchild, the other is your universal best friend. From Muten Roshi's training together to competing in every Tenkaichi Tournament together to taking on all the major villains (to varying extents). They care about each other, and while their priorities differ, they would die for each other (cooooorny meter overload!). Goku's capacity for vengeance when Kuririn dies the first time is only matched by Future Trunks' conviction for the destruction of all androids and Vegeta's dumb surpassing-Goku craze.

Goten x Trunks

Two best friends caught up in a series like most of us were as kids. Seeing the events through the eyes of kids was a difference from before (Gohan didn't really serve a purpose in this way) in Z (we had it in DB, of course). They always did things together, they always fought together, and they were always in "the shit" together. This is like the Kuririn and Goku but in Z. We only see one arc where this develops, but they obviously see things the same way in the same good cop / bad cop way as Goku and Vegeta (not to the extremes like their dads are, but you know what I mean).

I like Goku and Vegeta towards the end of the Boo saga. They were never teamed up like that at any time in the series, and they have some funny interactions. I love how Toriyama ended it with Vegeta and Goku teaming up like that, with Vegeta's little speech in which he finally accepts Goku's superiority.

Goku and Kurilin during the early stories, no contest. My favourite scene between them is their fight at the 22nd tournament. The banter, the brofist, the fact that Kurilin nearly won... it's awesome.

I’m not sure you can really class Gokuu & Gohan as a "bromance", since they’re father and son. Of course, fathers and sons can be friends, but I think their relationship would be quite different to the one either of them would have with a peer, a friend that was unrelated to them.

Anyway, my vote goes to Gokuu & Kuririn and Goten & Trunks. Gokuu and Kuririn were an adorable duo, both energetic boys who shared a common passion in martial arts and, while Kuririn started off as his self-proclaimed rival constantly trying to outdo him, he warmed to him over time and they became best friends. I felt really tense during the scene where Gokuu finds Kuririn’s dead body after the 22nd Tenkaichi Budoukai, his hair stands on end and he tearfully rushes out on Kinto’un to gain revenge on his friend’s murderer.

Goten & Trunks, because their personalities bounce off each other so well and they appear to be more "normal" than the other children we’ve seen in the series. They were rivals, but also close buddies, even through teenagehood.

How about Gohan and Trunks in the timelines in which 17 and 18 reigned? Because a lot of family friends and their fathers were dead (and no Goten), they were really close as Gohan and Trunks really had an older brother/younger brother type relationship as Gohan trained Trunks and they tried to take down the 2 Artificial Humans. They also had a bond as the last 2 remains of the Saiyan race.

Why? All he did was to throw Goku away with a Kiai. Right after that he uses 100% of his power and attacks Goku with everything he had, and Goku just look at him and says he is disappointed.

We just didn't see that much of their relationship, at least not as much as the others.

The way I see it, Goku+Krillin is pretty much the only clear candidate in this department.

Other relationships such as Goku+Gohan or Piccolo+Gohan don't qualify simply because it's a different type of bond being father and son/mentor and student.

Persoanlly, I'd add Goku and Piccolo to this too, though far less obvious.

Though I wonder if the Ginyu Force deserves a mention ? I mean I know they didn't really shed tears over each other's deaths but they seemed pretty close in a comraderie sorta way.

Nah, not really. When Gurd died, Recoom just said that it's a shame they'd have to think up a new special fighting pose that they could do with four, which represented their silly, unemphatic nature. Although that may just be because Gurd's the bottom-runger of the group (they didn't even give him a scouter! Not that he could put one on, and it'd be pointless to try and manufacture on specially for a weakling like him when he's got his gang around him anyway, but still).
