I don't know if anyone posted this, but here you go: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFTvabHR-9E
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

Maybe being a kid has changed since I was one, but I'd honestly be surprised if most kids before 10 (I mean, come on, 10's pretty old) knew what a VCR was. When I was in that age range was the first half of the '90s, and I knew what a record player was. Hell, I knew what 8-tracks were before I was 7, and that was definitely dead technology. I don't think you're giving kids enough credit, especially given that VCRs would have been much more ubiquitous in their parents' lives than 8-tracks were in mine.

There's a FUNi bio saying "Although he is Bulma's boyfriend, he is attentive to other girls as well.", everyone during and after the Android Saga treat him with extreme callousness, making jokes about how the baby isn't his and how weak he is. Finally? You remember the episode where the Z-Senshi (with inclusion of family and friends) attended a barbeque at Bulma's place, in the dub, Chichi was talking about trading mates with Bulma then Yamcha butts in saying either one can take him and Chichi shoots him down while everyone (including Yamcha, himself) laughs their asses off (if I were him, I'd beat the shit out of her).
I think you're just getting waaaay too defensive about Yamcha. The dub isn't exactly horrible to him, and in Japan he's popular because they love making fun of his death in the Saiyan saga. And that last line is borderline psychotic, even if we were talking about one of his male friends. It's not normal to beat the shit out of people for making a joke at your expense, and I'd like to think Yamcha isn't a completely unhinged psychopath.
Really? They even imply that he's sexist.

Goku didn't die in GT. The show sucked him off so much, it was impossible to keep him in the world of the living, so he ascended beyond mortality.

None of the main characters cover themselves in glory when it comes to gender equality, but I can't think of any specific to Yamcha example of him being sexist.

Haven't seen this classic posted here but I always cringed at this one:

*Tenshinhan's hand gets PUNCHED off by Nappa
Ten: You just wait till it grows back!

Also, some "gems" from IMDB:

Goku: That's what you think, Captain Cocky!

Frieza: There're three things I refuse to tolerate: cowardice, bad haircuts, and millitary insurrection.

Frieza: Thank you very much. I'm a visitor touring your lovely planet and I happened to come across seven Dragonballs. A man at a gift shop told me about the legend behind the balls. You know, the wish. But you need a password to activate them. Would you happen to know the password, my good man?
Nail: Not me. You should check with the chamber of commerce. They have that sort of information.

Vegeta: This doesn't concern you! This is between me and your circus clown of a father!
Goku: Circus clown. That's a new one.

Piccolo: I've never had real feelings about anyone before... Grr... I don't like it!

Dende: Hey! Don't piss off the god of love!
Jord doesn't have a avatar because the combination of Jord and a equally cool avatar would cause the universe to implode.

I remember in the dub where he said to Bulma "You're as smart as you can be, being a girl and all." Of course, I don't know how it is in the original.

Oh, yeah. I remember that. Although I'd say that makes him sound more like he's 8 than a sexist.

Except he's an adult male, and that's still a sexist comment that didn't exist in the original.

What I'm saying is the line, as written, sounds like it was dialogue intended to be spoken by a child. Hell, even Sabat's delivery makes it sounds like it's being spoken by a child, not an adult sexist. Hell, listen to it and tell me that you'd know any adult who'd say something like, "You're pretty smart, for a guuuuuuuurl and all!"

Same difference, IMO. Many sexists are immature by default anyway.

I'm not really sure why you're arguing about it. It doesn't make any difference. We certainly seem to agree it's a stupid and insulting line. I just think that even if they were purposely trying to make him a sexist (which I doubt), they screwed it up by making it sound like 3rd grade playground banter.

Not really arguing about it, just saying that even if it sounds like he's a child, it's still sexist anyway. Maybe I or both of us are nitpicking now, so let's just end it here.

I don't think I'm alone in saying this, but I enjoy these little quips in the Kai dub. One that made me smile in particular is when Kaio's looking up the coordinates for Namek in his directory, and while he's looking for it, the dub adds "This might as well be written in Japanese,". I think adding in little bits of more "Western" or "modern" humor, so long as it isn't Season 3-groan worthy, and doesn't replace a line, makes the dub seem more... colloquial, I guess, instead of just having the speech adapted to English.

I also consider that line to be a good nod to the original while also making some humor in the process.

Another one I really liked was when Bulma comes into the hospital with that crazy hairdo, and Kame Se'nin says "I thought you a deranged nurse [which was in the original] with a dated hairstyle." I love seeing the self-referential humor.

OT: Not really bad lines, but listen to anything the dub made Kila say. Atrocious.

I think there incredibly hokey, and by the way there is no Japan and hence no Japanese language in the Dragon Ball universe (also, everybody speaks the same language anyway).

As for my own "worst dub lines ever", it's hard to say, because examples such as many of these occurred almost every other time a chacter opened their mouths during much of the Z dub. If I had to give indivual examples though, I guess I go with Yamucha's yea, yea, yeaaah line. Also, any lines that most involve misrepresenting the chacters (especially Goku!) or the scene in question. Examples of both include Goku's mercy speach in the Saiyan Arc and anything from season 4 about General Tao and the history of the Red Ribbon Army. Hilarious when it comes to the latter that in only the very next year Dragonball would begin airing in its entirty alongside of the very next next DBZ "season" (because of this they even had to change his name to Mercenary Tao, again, after just introducing him about a year eariler!)!

Tell that to Murasaki and his American flag. I mean, Dragon Ball (Z) always had some real world references even in the original version (those were, however, few and far between unlike the dub).

Because of one line he says which probably isn't meant to make him look sexist. I don't see any evidence that they hate him.

I'm not sure if it was on the Toonami/edited dub but it definitely was on the uncut singles and pretty sure it was on the 2007 track as well. It's when Gohan and Kuririn learn again that Polunga can grant three wishes, Kuririn says Namek rules and then Dende shouts this.
